Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
IMPOSTER #1 of 4 $3.99 (21 Pulp) – In this new series from the folks at 21 Pulp, we’re introduced to a world where one man is and has always been every single superhero that has ever existed. A superman, a sorcerer, a swashbuckler and more. Yup, every single one. One dude. Now obviously, this would be a difficult act to pull off without some super-sick secret keeping skills and, unfortunately for the main man in the mask, somebody slipped up! The secret is out, the world is pissed, and everything is about to come crumbling down. Get your tickets for the big show right here. And by tickets, I mean this comic. ‘Natch. (Kris Johnson)
X-MEN: WORST X-MAN EVER #1 of 5 $3.99 (Marvel) – It’s a comic written by a musician and drawn by an awesome artist about a dude who’s nothing special but has just found out he’s “gifted” which gives him a one way ticket to Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. Problem is, in a school full of outcasts he’s still an outcast. He might just be the worst X-Man EVER! Watch his pain unfold in what looks to be a hilarious comic. (Andrew)
BART SIMPSON COMICS #100 $4.99 (Bongo) – The end is here for Bart Simpson! Well, the end of his comic book series, that is. Not of his life or anything, ‘cause he’s, like, a cartoon character and stuff. But hey, end of a series? Still a pretty big deal, and it looks like Bongo is doing the job right by putting El Barto out to pasture with an oversized 48 page special. Get in on the yuk-fest before that weiner Milhouse ruins it for everyone. (Kris Johnson)
GI JOE IDW COLLECTION HC VOL 06 $49.99 (IDW) – This just might be the most important modern G.I.Joe collection you can pick up! It’s reprints an important time in history: when IDW’s G.I.Joe series finally got good. That’s right, it’s the start of the Cobra Civil War arc. Check out the awesomeness that is G.I.Joe, Cobra and Snake-Eyes. Plus, check out that bad-ass cover by Adam Gorham of everybody’s favourite Seargent, Stalker (sorry Slaughter, but Stalker is pretty damn cool). (Andrew)
DAREDEVIL #4 $3.99 (Marvel) – It’s the beginning of a new arc and a great jumping on point for new readers as Daredevil himself uses it as a great jumping on point for bad guys’ faces. This ish, Tenfingers continues to solidify his power in Hell’s Kitchen as his creepy noodle fingers close their grip around the borough and our boy Matt calls in the Star-Spangled geriatric, Steve Rogers, for an assist. Here’s hoping DD’s heightened senses can withstand the potent, pungent power of WWII era old man smell long enough to get the ‘W’. (Kris Johnson)
BELUSHI: ON A MISSION FROM GOD $18.95 (One Peace) – A different take on a comedian who brought us some big laughs and left this world far too soon. Chronicling how easy success can turn into tragedy in the entertainment business, this one’s a must read for anybody who’s a fan of Joliet Jake Blues or Bluto or the Samurai. (Andrew)
THE LAST FALL TP $19.99 (IDW) – A battle-hardened soldier returns home to his wife and son after several grinding tours of duty, crafting a name and lethal legacy in an interplanetary war. Unfortunately, when his idyllic homecoming is shattered by the gruesome murder of his family, he has nothing left to live for but the sweet, sweet taste of revenge. Sure, this whole thing may sound like Space Punisher, buy, y’know SPACE Punisher… I have absolutely no problem with that. (Kris Johnson)
SNOWPIERCER HC VOL 03 TERMINUS $29.99 (Titan) – One of the best damn French comics EVER made. The Snowpiercer is a train 1001 cars long and contains the last of all human life. In the third volume, Terminus, supplies are limited, the populous is tired and the train is about ready to break down. This is where the survivors make one last play at keeping alive. If you liked the movie, you’ll love the comic….yes, there was a movie staring Chris Evans in case you didn’t know. (Andrew)
THE GODDAMNED #3 $3.99 (Image) – Noah and Cain are on a collision course as the end of all things approaches. One man claims he’s on a mission from God while happily slaughtering all non-believers and deviants in its execution. The other spends every moment cursing the name of the being that condemned him to wander the Earth for all eternity while searching for the one being that can finally grant him his death. As Gorilla Monsoon used to say, the irresistible force meets the immovable object and somebody’s gotta break! The ring bell is about to ding. Take your seats. (Kris Johnson)
FAITH #2 of 4 $3.99 (Valiant) – You could say I lost my faith in crossover events / You could say I lost my belief in the big two / You could say I lost my sense of continuity / You could say I lost all this and worse but / If I ever lose my faith in Faith / it means I’ve been haunted by a wraith.…… Okay, so that last part didn’t make much sense but hey, what can you do when you’re re-writing lyrics to a Sting song, am I right? Issue 2 of the most exciting superhero comic of 2016 hits shelves this week and you gotta check it out to see how Faith handles both an alien threat and her ex-boyfriend coming to town. If you don’t pick up this book…..There’d be nothing left for you to do! (Andrew)
