On March 18th, we’re heading back to the Devil’s playground, Hell’s Kitchen. For fans without fear, both new and old, that Friday will be the start of a binge watch that will cause many to turn a blind eye to other work or obligations they have as Netflix launches all 13 episodes of Daredevil Season 2. The first season took the streaming service by storm and Matt Murdock gained many new fans as he defeated the nefarious Wilson Fisk (a.k.a. the Kingpin). But with a new season comes new challenges and I’m here to get you ready for them. Over the next few weeks leading up to the new season’s release, I’ll be dropping more Daredevil comic history knowledge, focusing on new characters, storylines and predictions. There’s still a fight to be won on the streets of Hell’s Kitchen, and with Countdown to Daredevil, you’ll know who all the players are.

In our final installment before Season 2 drops this Friday, I thought it would be good to take a look at two of the most important people in the life of Matt Murdock: Foggy and Karen. Franklin “Foggy” Nelson and Karen Page both made their debut along side the Man without Fear in Daredevil #1 back in 1964. Foggy has been a constant in DD’s world, appearing regularly from then til now. Karen on the other hand does not have as long a history as she met her demise at the hands of Bullseye in Kevin Smith and Joe Quesada’s Daredevil Vol. 2 #5 (1999). Karen’s journey is one of pain and sacrifice…..but then again, so is Foggy’s. Each been put through the ringer and all for their devotion to the blind lawyer of Hell’s Kitchen.

When I think about these two characters, the best friend who’s staked his career and life helping protect DD and the woman who is probably Matt’s one true love, my immediate thoughts turn to stories where they have been wronged or worse, either by those attempting to hurt Daredevil or by the Devil himself. If you’re a fan of the Man Without Fear, you know how much shit Matt’s gone through over the years: presumed dead, loss of his firm, all his secrets laid bare. But that’s nothing compared to what Foggy and Karen, two regular people with no special powers to speak of, have had to endure over the last few decades. Let’s take a quick look at some of the highlights for both:

FOGGY NELSON

  • Almost assassinated by Elektra after the Kingpin puts a contract out on him.
  • Storefront law firm has to close down after Matt loses interest in it.
  • Framed by Mysterio for a murder he didn’t commit.
  • Stabbed and seriously wounded by inmates of Rykers Island prison. Is declared dead but secretly has to go into witness protection.
  • Disbarred after incriminating evidence is leaked by the Kingpin.
  • Almost murdered by Daredevil who is possessed by a demon.
  • Has to fake death after Matt confirms his identity as Daredevil to the public so he can get cancer treatment without fear of being killed by one of Matt’s enemies.

KAREN PAGE

  • Kidnapped and almost killed by the villain Death’s Head (who turns out to be her father).
  • Addicted to drugs and living as a low level porn actress, she’s manipulated into selling Daredevil’s identity to the Kingpin.
  • The Free drug and legal counseling clinic she sets up is destroyed during a demonic invasion of Manhattan.
  • Discovers that Matt is cheating on her with Typhoid Mary (an assassin with multiple personality disorders).
  • Tricked into thinking she’s HIV positive by Mysterio so that she will return to New York.
  • Dies by jumping in the way of a billy club thrown by Bullseye at Daredevil’s head.

It ain’t easy being someone Matt Murdock cares about. While being hurt and in danger is nothing new for the loved ones of a superhero, it seems that both Foggy and Karen have taken on quite a bit for very little reward. From the outside looking in, it’s safe to say that the negative surely outweighs the positive when it comes to hanging with DD. The question becomes will their fates end up similar on the Netflix original series? Foggy now knows Matt’s alter ego. Will the pressures of keeping his secret be too much for him to bear? It’s obvious that Matt and Karen have feelings for each other. Will their possible relationship complicate things? Are these characters destined to go down dark paths based on their love of Matt Murdock? We’ll find out this Friday!
