Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
MARCH OVERSIZED HC BOOK 01 LTD ED $29.99 (IDW) – When people talk about important comics, comics that have an impact on society, comics that have something to say, comics that illustrate the challenges and complexities of the world we navigate every day; the first comic that springs to mind is generally Maus. March should be an easy second. An autobiographical comic from the pen of civil rights leader and US congressman John Lewis, Book 1 of March covers such important moments as the Selma marches in 1965 and the Nashville lunch counter protests of 1960. Considering the present issues facing the US and North America as a whole, I don’t think the timing of this new edition could be any more perfect. (Kris Johnson)
HOWARD THE DUCK #5 $3.99 (Marvel) – The first story arc concludes here! Who woulda thunk that Howard the Duck would find himself in a big cosmic adventure involving Galactus, the Silver Surfer, The Guardians of the Galaxy and The Collector? Not this guy. My big question is how the hell is Howard gonna get outta this one? Will he wish himself away to an island resort somewhere on Titan? That’s what I’d do if I were him. But I guess he’ll most likely face his problems, seeing as how that will probably be a more compelling read. We’ll see……we’ll see. (Andrew)
MIGHTY THOR #5 $3.99 (Marvel) – Thor, Goddess of Thunder, takes on Odin, King of the Gods, with the fate of the Asgard and the Ten Realms hanging in the balance! With the universe at large facing destruction at the hands of Malekith’s army, the All-Father seems more interested in punishing his wife and the newest wielder of Mjolnir than protecting his people. Has the god of gods finally gone mad or is there something even more sinister at play? Either way, mofo needs needs to straighten out his priorities. (Kris Johnson)
SAMURAI #1 $3.99 (Titan) – It’s a comic about a samurai and samurais are cool. That should be enough to make you want to read it. For those that need more there’s a mystery to be solved as well as Takeo sets out to the Unnamed Island to find out the truth about his brother, his family and the tattoo that saved his life. But more important than that is that this is a comic about a frickin’ samurai! (Andrew)
MOCKINGBIRD #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – Bobbi Morse is back in a brand new solo series! This time around, novelist Chelsea Cain and artist Kate Niemczyk are handling the creative duties to bring readers a fresh and unique take on Marvel’s most prolific SHIELD agent not named Nick Fury… or Black Widow… or Dum Dum Dugan. Ahem… speaking of SHIELD, something stinks in the agency’s medical and recovery network, and it ain’t the week-old Hydra corpses waiting to be dumped at the nearest landfill. Join Bobbi as she fixes the worlds biggest spy agency’s problems for the 763rd time. (Kris Johnson)
MARS ATTACKS: OCCUPATION #1 $3.99 (IDW) – Okay, so we know all about those Martians and their love of attacking things. We’ve been talking about that for years. But what happens after they attack? They take over, right? Must be pretty shitty living under Martian rule. You’d probably get fed up with it real quick. Well, that’s exactly how Ruby Johnson feels and she’s gonna do something about it, DAMMIT! Human liberation starts now! (Andrew)
ADVENTURE TIME #50 $4.99 (Boom) – Adventure Time hits 50 issues and you know what that means? Why, an oversized anniversary edition, of course! Filled with past lives, astral projection, and noodley arms, Finn and Jake are sure to have their hands full. Full of awesomeness, that is!
BAKER STREET PECULIARS #1 $3.99 (Boom) – A Giant Stone Lion is attacking 1930s London. How the hell did that happen? This sounds like a job for Sherlock Holmes….except he’s not real. A housekeeper named Mrs. Hudson wrote all those stories under the pen name of John Watson. But she’s a pretty good detective and with a rag tag bunch of junior detectives to back her up, they’re gonna solve this case. Family fun that you’d expect from Boom, this one looks like a winner! (Andrew)
DOCTOR STRANGE #6 $4.99 (Marvel) – Its the beginning of a new arc, as ‘The Last Days of Magic’ starts right here! Jump on to one of the absolute best books Marvel’s currently pumping out as Dr. Strange struggles against the technological terror known as The Imperikul. Hellbent on purging all magic from the multiverse, the Imperikul have set their sights on the 616. The only problem is they’re already here and the good Doc discovered the threat a little too slowly. His magics are drained, his spells are weakened, and his artifacts are crumbling. What chance does the Sorcerer Supreme stand without any sorcery at his disposal? (Kris Johnson)
MS MARVEL #5 $3.99 (Marvel) – It’s another Wednesday where I find myself singing the praises of Ms. Marvel, one of the best superhero books out there. You know what would make this comic even better? An army of Ms. Marvels to make the streets of Jersey City all the more safer. Be careful what you wish for. After a string of bad shit (getting kicked out of the Avengers, flunking at school and getting her ass handed to her by a second string baddie), Kamala and her friend Bruno are looking for a win……a win they hope comes from using a bunch of Ms. Marvel automatons as Kamala’s back up crew. Will this end well? I’m guessing no. But in the meantime we got a bunch of Kamalas running around, so it should be entertaining to say the least. (Andrew)
