Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
DOCTOR STRANGE #7 $3.99 (Marvel) – Enjoyed that new Doctor Strange trailer, did ya? Confused the fuck out of ya, did it? Got angry about some whitewashing, did ya? Well, pick up this issue of Doctor Strange for some still-confusing, yet social guilt-free magicianing with a side order of slam-bang action sauce! The Last Days of Magic are here and Doctor Strange is drained and broken at the mercy of the tech powered Imperator. What is a Sorcerer Supreme sans sorcery to do? Maybe suck his thumb a bunch and cry. But they can’t fill a whole book with that, can they? (Kris Johnson)
4 KIDS WALK INTO A BANK #1 $3.99 (Black Mask) – Described as “Wes Anderson remaking Reservoir Dogs”, this new title about an 11 year old girl named Paige and her #socialoutcast gang of friends is bound to be the indie darling of the comic world. A foursome of ex-cons (who’re total morons) need Paige’s dad to pull off a bank heist. What can Paige and her friends do to protect her dad? Why take his place on planning the heist, of course. Doing something wrong so that your dad doesn’t have to. Let’s see how that goes. (Andrew)
FOURTH PLANET #1 $3.99 (Chapter House) – Fred Kennedy and Miko Maciaszek’s mind-bending, quasi-surrealist, sci-fi web series comes to print from the fine folks at Chapter House Comics! When a galactic warship larded with human slaves crash lands on a fertile new world, the beautiful, free existence of which the shackled masses dreamed of seems at hand. Unfortunately, the planet’s three native races are engaged in a long and bloody, centuries-old war and they have other ideas. (Kris Johnson)
KILLBOX #1 $3.99 (American Gothic) – Nothing like a game of death to get the blood pumping, amirite? With gritty visuals and a storytelling style that will remind you of The Button Man, Killbox is a high stakes killing game bet on by wealthy folks with a lust for watching folks die. Players are selected and put in the game: a teenager who likes guns, the wife of a Yakuza, a bartender who’s despearate, etc. The high rollers bet on who will die and who will survive. It’s dark. It’s deadly. God, is it entertaining. Check it out. (Andrew)
PUNISHER: BORN TP $14.99 (Marvel) – One of the greatest Punisher stories of all time gets a brand new printing! If you’ve missed out on this bad mother in the past, it is most definitely time to remedy that shit come Wednesday. Set during the Vietnam War, this book tells the origin of the Punisher from a bloody and sometimes heart-breaking angle never before seen. Even before that fateful day in the park, the universe was already conspiring to turn Castle into its remorseless dealer of death, galvanized by one of the most vicious, brutal, and violent conflicts of the 20th century. Did Frankie boy ever really have a chance? (Kris Johnson)
A YEAR OF MARVELS: THE AMAZING #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – Here comes a 6 issue mini that has a specific story for each month of the year. In this first issue, we get a Ryan North penned Spider-Man tale taking place in February that’s bound to be fun. But the big draw is the March story written by Amy Chu that focuses on Ant-Man and his security crew (Grizzly & Machinesmith) during Spring Break. You know that shit is about to go very wrong, very fast. That’s all I need to know to want to read it. (Andrew)
DAREDEVIL #6 $3.99 (Marvel) – After driving Tenfingers out of Hell’s Kitchen, Matt Murdock has earned himself some down time. So, what’s a blind, super-powered lawyer to do when he has no Hand ninjas to punch or sidekicks to train? Why he heads down to the park with a bag full of old bread and— Oh shit! Elektra’s back? Well fuck, guess he’s just gonna have to fight/bang/argue/die-in-each-
ASTONISHING ANT-MAN TP VOL 01: EVERYBODY LOVES TEAM-UPS $19.99 (Marvel) – Double your Ant-Man! Double your fun! I know this list has been pretty Marvel-heavy this week (and almost every other week) but that’s because there’s so many fun titles to choose from right now. This one is probably the most fun (Please don’t tell Howard the Duck or Ms. Marvel I just said that). Check it out for a laugh and some fantastic storytelling. (Andrew)
BATMAN #51 $3.99 (DC Comics) – Amongst a sea of mediocrity across the DC line, one of the greatest Batman runs of all time managed to emerge. This week, it reaches its mighty conclusion. The end of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Bat-Epic is here and if you miss this, you’re missing out on history. (Kris Johnson)
FAITH #4 $3.99 (Valiant) – Be your own / personal / Faith fan / Someone who reads this book / Give it a look / Be you’re own / personal / Faith fan / Someone who likes a hero / Don’t be a zero! So we’ve come to the 4th issue of Faith and I’ve resorted to rewriting Personal Jesus…..there’s only so many songs that use the word Faith. If you haven’t been reading this mini, you’ve really been missing out. Thankfully, there’s been reprintings of earlier issues, so there’s a chance that your local comic shop can bring up to speed to enjoy the final issue of this limited series……that way you’ll be prepared for the ONGOING title when it comes out this summer. REACH OUT AND BUY FAITH!
