Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
JOYRIDE #1 $3.99 (Boom) – The stars have been locked away from the people of Earth by an oppressive global regime. The youth of the world are indoctrinated from an early age into a militarized fighting force. The entire planet has been surrounded by a protective barrier known as SafeSky. What’s a teenager to do, having grown up in such bleak surroundings? Why, rebel, of course! And in the case of Joyride, that means jacking a spaceship and cracking SafeSky wide open! Join in the adventure this week! (Kris Johnson)
CRIMINAL 10TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL ED $4.99 (Image) – TEN YEARS! Where did the time go? It seems like only yesterday there were stories of Cowards and dudes named Lawless. The next thing you know, the Archies were gettin’ in on the action (not really them, but folks like ’em) and so on and so forth. But now a new story is on the horizon….and YES, Tracy Lawless is back for it. And just like last year, this Criminal One-Shot comes in a super awesome magazine-style format as well (for only a dollar more!). Take a stroll down the darker side of the street and celebrate a decade of crime stories from Brubaker and Phillips. (Andrew)
MIGHTY THOR #6 $3.99 (Marvel) – Jason Aaron and Rafa Garras take us back in time for an untold saga of the valiant and virile Young Thor! In the Scandinavia of old, the God of Thunder finds himself up against a threat unheard of when Loki conjures what can only be described as Viking Hulk! What the shit is that? Read this issue to find out, yo! (Kris Johnson)
DIVINITY II #1 $3.99 (Valiant) – Okay, so the Divinity series was a quite a surprise when I read it. The story of a cosmonaut sent into the farthest reaches of space during the cold war only to return to Earth in the present day with god-like powers was a fantastic piece of comics storytelling. But as it was spelled out in the first series, there were THREE cosmonauts sent into space. The second one is about to return and she’s still very much in love with the communist ideal. What happens when a person with deity-like powers touches down with the vision to bring back the Soviet regime? Find out in this here book. (Andrew)
POWER MAN AND IRON FIST #3 $3.99 (Marvel) – The re-teaming of Cage and Rand has been predictably awesome, but the level of fun present in this book was truly unexpected. David Walker and Sanford Greene have brought a fresh new voice to Marvel Comics and it’s resulted in one of the most purely enjoyable books on the shelf today. And, hey, even if this ish is your first, this comic is written in such a way that it should be easily accessible to readers of all stripes. Pick it up for some quality smash mouth, chop-socky action! (Kris Johnson)
LAZARUS SOURCEBOOK #1 $3.99 (Image) – Taking a break from the current goings on in pages of Lazarus and giving us a bit of a different view of events, this special one-shot issue gives us a look at what it’s like to live under the Carlyle regime. These folks control your home and they decide if your worthy enough to be serf. It’s a new way to look at the Lazarus world. Fun! (Andrew)
BLACK EYED KIDS #1 $1.99 (Aftershock) – What’s creepier than creepy, dirty, dead-eyed teenagers? Creepy, dirty BLACK-eyed teenagers, that’s what! Like, totally black. No sclera, guys (that’s the white part)! Are they demons? Angels? Ghosts? Monkeys in human suits? Ghost monkeys? Ghost monkeys in human suits?! The possibilities are endless, but one thing’s for sure: They’re in this horror comic and they’re up to no good! (Kris Johnson)
DEPT. H #1 $3.99 (Dark Horse) – Oh, I get it. The title is like “Department H” but it also spells DEPTH. The perfect name for an underwater murder mystery with a bit of sci-fi/fantasy thrown in. This is the second Matt Kindt book I put on the list this week and just like Divinity II, this is sure to be a thought-provoking tale. His art makes one think of the adventure comics of the 50s and his pacing is such that you feel something frightful is around every corner. Should be a page turner. (Andrew)
STAR WARS: VADER DOWN TP $19.99 (Marvel) – For your pleasure I have prepared a Haiku to commemorate the collection of the wonderful Vader Down story into a single trade. Ahem: Darth Vader alone / Sith Lord versus Rebellion / Many get fucked up…..Thank you. Please hold your applause. (Kris Johnson)
ASTONISHING ANT-MAN #7 $3.99 (Marvel) – The past six issues have been leading up to this moment….we’re finally gonna get the story of how Scott Lang ended up back in jail. But not only that, Darla Deering (aka Miss Thing, aka Scott’s ex) is still in town. And, The Power Broker is still trying to mess with Scott as well. But most important, it’s also SPRING BREAK! This seems like a bunch of random ingredients that will lead to the comedy of errors that we’ve come to expect in our Ant-Man comics. Can’t wait! (Andrew)
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
