Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
DC UNIVERSE REBIRTH #1 $2.99 (DC Comics) – DC Comics reboots….sorry, doesn’t reboot (but kinda still reboots) the entire DC Universe once again in their attempts to entice readers both new and old back to their venerable titles and characters. Geoff Johns pens the saga and a who’s who of DC artists lend their talents over the course of this 80 page beast. Needless to say, it’s a whole lotta book for $2.99 (US)! Now as some of you undoubtedly know, this sucker leaked online a few days ago and for those of you who resisted the allure, I’ll just say that the comic sounds absolutely insane. For better or worse, its a must read. Aaaaand, it’s totally a reboot. (Kris Johnson)
CAPTAIN AMERICA: STEVE ROGERS #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – It’s the return of Stevesy! That’s what they call him, right? Oh, he’s using the Captain America name again? What about Sam Wilson? He’s Captain America too? Wow! Then I’m just gonna call him Stevesy to keep things straight. Anyways, Stevesy’s back and he’s got a new shield (not really a big fan, I must say) and a new mission: Take down Hydra and The Red Skull……wait a second, that sounds like a pretty old mission to me. Whatever. Don’t mess with a classic. (Andrew)
DEATH FOLLOWS TP $17.99 (Dark Horse) – Cullen Bunn spins a tale of rural horror as darkness pays a visit to a struggling family of farmers in the form of a wandering farmhand named Cole. The longer Cole lingers, the more restless the dead grow. But the farm will die without his help. Is surviving another season worth the cost of their souls? (Kris Johnson)
JOYRIDE #2 $3.99 (Boom!) – The second issue of this limited series hits stands this week and action is hot and heavy. The crew’s got some money to burn so they go to a planet-sized mall. Something tells me that this intergalactic shopping spree may go pear-shaped any second. I hate it when things go pear-shaped. We’ll be chatting with Joyride Co-creator Marcus To this Friday. I think I’ll ask him what shapes he hates. (Andrew)
DOCTOR STRANGE #8 $3.99 (Marvel) – If you’ve ever had an interest in Doctor Strange and are not reading The Last Days of Magic, then you are missing out, my friends. This is the best Strange story since The Oath, without question, and it’s only getting started! Strange is defeated. His mystical arsenal is destroyed. The Sanctum Sanctorum is in disarray and The Imperikul have eliminated all magic on earth and all related realms… Or have they? Strange and the last living mages on the planet are down, but they are definitely not out. Can they claw their way back into battle by searching out the final vestiges of eldritch energy hiding in the darkest corners of our world? And if the magic can be found, will it be enough to defeat the seemingly unstoppable Imperator? (Kris Johnson)
HERO COMICS HERO INITIATIVE BENEFIT BOOK TP $19.99 (IDW) – If you love comics, you need to go buy this trade. The Hero Initiative is an organization that helps comic creators in need, whether it be medical bills or improving their living conditions as they grow old. They do an important job and they need your help. By buying this book, you’ll help raise money to aid some great creators who have fallen on hard times in their golden years. In return, you get to read awesome comic tales from the likes of Kurt Busiek, Kaare Andrews, Kevin Eastman, Neal Gaiman, Ashley Wood and MORE! Sounds like a pretty good deal where everybody wins if I do say so myself. (Andrew)
AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE #9 $3.99 (Archie) – Holy shit! A new Afterlife with Archie? It’s been a few months since the last install— Hold on… What’s that? It’s been a year since the last issue? A fucking year?! Jee-zus. You’d think Kevin Smith was writing this thing. Well anyways, after over a goddamn year, ol’ Arch Andrews and the undead hordes of Riverdale have returned. This issue focuses on that turd Reggie as the guilt over killing Hot Dog and pretty much starting the ball rolling on this whole zombie apocalypse thing finally gets to him. Will it be worth the wait? Enhhh, Who am I kidding? This book is amazing. Of course it will be. (Kris Johnson)
MS MARVEL #7 $3.99 (Marvel) – Hey, did you hear? The heroes are having another one of those Civil War thingies. You know, like the last one that saw Cap get arrested and the Avengers be split down the middle. I think they made a movie recently that covered similar ground. Anyways, Ms. Marvel, Spider-Man and Nova (all current Avengers) got bigger problems than heroes fighting with each other. They got an academic competition to win. Heroes might be punching fellow heroes in the jaw and such, but this is Math and Math trumps all! (Andrew)
SCOOBY APOCALYPSE #1 $3.99 (DC Comics) – Speaking of reboots, DC has decided it’s going to do something new with the Scooby gang by placing the characters we all know and love (well, versions of them, at least) into a world in which the supernatural creatures they encounter are absolutely real. No old men in rubber masks or goofy schemes to get the insurance money from the failed amusement park. Nope, this is pretty much all of those “grim and gritty” apocalyptic Scooby Gang shirts that are so trendy nowadays (I’m looking at you, sexy, zombie-killer Velma!) come to life. Well, come to the page, anyway. So, unless you were all wearing those shirts and sharing that fan art ironically, I’d say this should appeal to some of you. (Kris Johnson)
MONSTRESS #6 $3.99 (Image) – This title’s been nominated for an Eisner Award for best new series and I think that nom is well deserved. Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda have been crafting a beautiful tale that can only be described to a newcomer as “Steampunk meets Kaiju”. In the final issue of the first story arc, Maika must rely on the “monster within” to save both her and her friends. Will she be glad she did? If you haven’t had the chance yet, check out this series….and then take a listen the Geek Hard episode from last month where we interview Marjorie about this awesome book. You’ll be glad you did. (Andrew)
