Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
CONTROL #1 $3.99 (Dynamite) – Andy Diggle and Andrea Mutti join forces for this title exploring corruption among the US capital’s power elite. Detective Kate Burnham of the DCPD runs afoul of the wrong types of fancy-pantses and becomes tasked with making a political a-bomb of an investigation disappear in order to salvage her career. But when the trail of no-goodnicks stretches from the Washington DC police department all the way to the shining heights of Parliament Hill and back to the streets, the streets begin to push back. (Kris Johnson)
DEADLY CLASS #21 $3.99 (Image) – It’s the final issue of the Die For Me arc and big surprise, SOMEBODY’S GONNA DIE! This is what happens when you tell a bunch of children of criminals and assassins (or just any bunch of children, really) to go hunt fellow students and kill ’em for a passing grade. But who out of Marcus and and his “friends” will make it to next semester? The action has been fast and furious and spilled out all over San Francisco. Pretty soon, the blood will be spilling out as well. (Andrew)
BATMAN REBIRTH #1 $2.99 (DC Comics) – DC Rebirth is here, for better or worse, and that means yet another relaunch for the Bat. Scott Snyder joins debuting Bat-writer Tom King in ushering in the new(ish?) era with a tale pitting the Dark Knight against the always weird Calendar Man. Considering the Caped Crusader’s flagship title was one of the few books that remained consistently awesome throughout the New52, its a fairly safe bet that the excellence will continue into Rebirth as well. (Kris Johnson)
THE REVISIONIST #1 $3.99 (Aftershock) – Time travel involving the repair of fractured timelines is all the rage these days. DC’s got a CW show that’s pretty much all about that. Not to mention they’re doing some timeline repairs with the whole Rebirth thing. But over at Aftershock, a story’s brewing involving an assassin that cleans up loose ends throughout time. Dude’s gotta make the tough decisions to save the future and all that good stuff. Will this be a winner? Time will tell. (Sorry, I had to say it.) (Andrew)
STRANGE ATTRACTORS #1 $3.99 (Boom) – Now here’s a crazy sounding comic: The only things that’s been keeping New York City from collapsing in on itself for the last few decades is one scientist making a series of micro-adjustments every single day. What are these adjustments? Why minor actions that chaos math dictates will cause massive ripple effects resulting in larger, net positive repercussions for all of society, of course! But what happens when this scientist disappears? What happens when his adjustments stop happening? That’s something that Heller Wilson, a brilliant mathematics student, doesn’t want to find out. Can he fill the void before NYC falls to literal and metaphorical pieces? (Kris Johnson)
THE PUNISHER #2 $3.99 (Marvel) – The first issue of this series by Becky Cloonan and Steve Dillon was met with high praise. Issue two is bound to deliver once again as Frank is on the hunt for the mercenary outfit turned drug cartel known as Condor. He’s hit the road and is leaving a trail of dead bodies in his wake. It’s like a trail of bread crums but, you know, dead bodies. They’re easier to see, I guess. They’re real easy for the DEA to see, that’s for damn sure. (Andrew)
THE GODDAMNED #4 $3.99 (Image) – The Goddamned returns after too goddamn long of a goddamn hiatus. Cain and Noah are on a collision course. The flood is almost upon them both. Jason Aaron and RM Geura supply words and art. You’re buying this book. (Kris Johnson)
WILD BLUE YONDER TP $19.99 (IDW) – This was a miniseries that got away from me and I never took the time to track down the rest of the issues. Looks like I don’t have to worry with this handy, dandy trade now available. There’s nothing cooler than a teenage fighter pilot protecting her flying fortress home in a post-apocalyptic future. Add to that some stunning visuals from Zach Howard and you’ve got yourself a winner. (Andrew)
SHANG-CHI MASTER OF KUNG FU OMNIBUS HC VOL 01 $125.00 (Marvel) – For the first time ever, Marvel brings together every single early appearance of Shang Chi in a beautiful hardcover collection! Read along as the Master of Kung Fu trades blows with everyone from his arch nemesis Fu Manchu, to the monstrous Man-Thing, all the way to the Amazing Spider-Man himself! This is a can’t-miss collection that’s been a loooong time coming, so pick up a copy this Wednesday and join in on the chop-socky ass-kickery! (Kris Johnson)
GREEN ARROW REBIRTH #1 $2.99 (DC Comics) – “FINALLY, the Green Arrow has COME BACK to comics!” It’s been a while, old friend. While you’ve been gone, there’s been this pretender that was trying too hard to be like that Stephen Amell kid, stinking up the comic pages of your book. But now your back and it appears that Black Canary is as well. Looking forward to see what happens here. I’m just glad that the beard is back. That’s the first sign that things are headed in the right direction. Let’s hope that’s not all they got right. (Andrew)
