Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
WACKY RACELAND #1 $3.99 (DC Comics) – Okay, I admit, I’m taking a pretty big flyer on this one. But if anybody has the balls and/or access to amazing drugs to conceive of/greenlight something as batshit insane as a gritty reboot of fucking Hanna-Barbera’s Wacky Racers, then I think we owe to them to at least crack the cover and take a look. This could either be brilliant or the absolute biggest hunk of shit to ever grace a comic rack. (Kris Johnson)
HOWARD THE DUCK #8 $3.99 (Marvel) – It’s the moment we’ve been waiting three months for! Howard has come home. But where the hell is that? And Beverly’s back! Who’s Beverly? Why just one of the most important people in Howard’s life….at one time. For those that still don’t know, she was played by Lea Thompson in that so-called Howard the Duck movie. Don’t hold that against her. What happens when a duck is confronted with his past? We find out here! (Andrew)
GRIZZLY SHARK #3 (OF 3) $3.99 (Image) – Just as the cover screams in our faces, the final chapter of the Grizzly Shark trilogy features the ultimate showdown between Grizzly Shark and Sea Bear! Who will emerge victorious in this apocalyptic clash of teeth, claws and various grades of beastly growls? My guess is the SyFy network and TV’s Richard Grieco, star of the inevitable adaptation. (Kris Johnson)
WONDER WOMAN REBIRTH #1 $2.99 (DC Comics) – I’m not sure where I stand yet with this whole Rebirth nonsense, but I’ll tell you one thing: In Greg Rucka I trust. Rucka returns to Wonder Woman and this time, it’s personal. I’m sure it was personal the first time as well but I needed to say something to finish that sentence. Backed up by Paulo Siqueira and Liam Sharp on art, this book might just be the crown jewel of the whole event! Can’t wait to see what Greg does with the Amazon warrior this time. (Andrew)
CIVIL WAR II AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – Sure, this is Spidey and Civil War and we all know that’s big time stuff. But for me, the biggest draw here is Travel Foreman on art. That dude has been an outright beast on everything from Ares, to the Immortal Iron Fist, all the way to the absolute masterpiece that was Nu52 Animal Man. So, if there’s gonna be any book you pick up this week solely for the art, let it be this one, yeah? (Kris Johnson)
SEX CRIMINALS TP VOL 03 THREE THE HARD WAY $14.99 (Image) – The third Trade Paperback collecting one of the most entertaining series out there. Fraction and Zdarsky bring the thunder on this one. And hey, it’s my second Chip Zdarsky pick for this week and it wasn’t even planned…..yes it was. (Andrew)
BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA #25 $4.99 (Boom) – In the series finale, Jack Burton is tossed back in time to the events of the original movie and must do everything in his power to make sure everything goes down just as it did the first time around or risk absolutely blowing up all of time and reality! Fred Van Lente teams with every artist who has ever worked on this series to show us once and for all that it really is all in the reflexes. (Kris Johnson)
4001 AD BLOODSHOT #1 $3.99 (Valiant) – Back in the day, Bloodshot was the ultimate bad-ass with his nanites working overtime to heal and protect him. But in the 41st Century, the nanites are all that’s left of the man and they’re on one final mission. What could it possibly be? What could be so important that it spurs on one last road trip? And how the hell does it connect to the rest of this 4001 AD stuff? Your guess is as good as mine. (Andrew)
FLASH REBIRTH #1 $2.99 (DC Comics) – I really enjoyed Rebirth as a standalone comic book tale and the Flash thread was the biggest part of that enjoyment. Here’s hoping we get more of that sweet, sweet Speed-Force enhanced goodness in the Barry Allen-centric Rebirth launch issue. (Kris Johnson)
THE FIX #3 $3.99 (Image) – This is hands down the funniest comic out there right now. It’s no surprise as creators Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber were behind Superior Foes of Spider-Man, which was hands down the funniest book of 2013-14. You see that film The Nice Guys that’s in theatres? These guys are like them….except instead of being nice guys, they’re total pricks. In the latest issue, Roy takes up a night job as personal security for a young Hollywood starlet. As you can see from the cover, she’s a bit of a handful. Don’t miss the boat on what might be one of the best comics of the year! Yeah, I know there’s still a half a year to go but I got faith that this title will end up on a lot of “Best Of” lists come Christmastime. (Andrew)
