Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
BATMAN #1 $2.99 (DC Comics) – Batman Rebirth exceeded my expectations, so I’m really looking forward to what writer and ex-CIA bad-ass Tom King can do with the title now that Scott Snyder has made his exit. David Finch joins on art for this new chapter in the DC Universe, detailing Batman’s first encounter with a new dynamic duo with designs on being his replacement. Much punching and bat-themed gadgetry will be had. (Kris Johnson)
STAR WARS: HAN SOLO #1 of 5 $3.99 (Marvel) – Who’s more worthy of their own book then that lovable scoundrel who’s ship made the Kessel Run in….well, you get the idea. I’m surprised it’s taken Marvel this long to give old Han his own book. But the wait is over and in the hands of Marjorie Liu and Mark Brooks, it’s gonna be a thing of beauty. Han’s gotta smuggle some folks to freedom under the guise of competing in a starship race….the same race he’s been dreaming about winning all his life. Will glory or honour prevail? Can’t wait to find out. (Andrew)
TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE #1 $3.99 (IDW) – Horror master Joe Hill resurrects the classic anthology series, Tales from the Darkside, for a four-issue frightfest in comic book form! What dark wonders lurk in the shadows to delight and titillate horror afficanados? Grab the first issue from the fine folks at IDW this Wednesday to find out! (Kris Johnson)
LAZARUS #22 $3.99 (Image) – Lazarus is back! And it’s gonna be bloodier and more cut-throat-ier than ever! There are 15 families that rule the world and that’s 14 too many. In the latest story arc, Cull, there’s going to be a culling. I’m pretty sure the title gave that reveal away. (Andrew)
VOTE LOKI #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – This has already been a very… fuckey? Batshit? Weird? Sure let’s go with weird… It’s been a very weird election cycle, to say the least. So what’s a little God of Mischief between friends, eh? Politicians, as we all know, are well versed in the art of lies but what will they do when they face a god with an absolute mastery of it? Flip-flopping, filibustering, and maybe a smackerel of murder is my guess. (Kris Johnson)
NEIL GAIMAN’S HOW TO TALK TO GIRLS AT PARTIES HC $17.99 (Dark Horse) – Neil Gaiman, Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon bring us a coming of age story about guys trying to talk to girls at parties…girls who have a lot more going on than they know at the time. That’s all I can say about it, really, other than you should definitely read it. (Andrew)
JUGHEAD #7 $3.99 (Archie) – Summer is almost here! And what’s summertime without a trip to the old cottage? I know it, you know it, and our pal Jughead definitely knows it. So when it comes time to quit the rat race of Riverdale, he seeks solace in the one place he’s ever known peace… A giant plate of hamburgers! But after that he’s totally gonna unwind and kick back in the wilderness with his boy Arch. Mayhem ensues, I’m sure of it. (Kris Johnson)
JOYRIDE #3 $3.99 (Boom) – Another chapter in this fun-loving space adventure and this time it features a damaged ship, a free fall to a psychic planet and a trip into someone else’s memories. This is without a doubt the most excitement you can have in space with your clothes on. Check out this title. These kids get into some shenanigans that are too fun to miss. And the artwork by Marcus To makes the fun even more so! (Andrew)
FIGHT CLUB 2 HC $29.99 (Dark Horse) – I was extremely skeptical of this title when it was first announced, but Chuck Palahniuk and Cameron Stewart have managed to combine their respective talents in such unexpectedly awesome ways that they’ve produced a near-perfect sequel to a property that didn’t really need one. That is not a knock in any way. This book shouldn’t work but it does on nearly every level and in spades. If you missed it the first time, pick up this collection of the first ten issues and then go home and read the shit out of it… Just don’t talk about it after. (Kris Johnson)
BLACK WIDOW #4 $3.99 (Marvel) – Waid and Samnee continue one of the best Black Widow stories ever told, complete with some more cool “Red Room Flashbacks”! Widow’s hurt and she’s getting by with a little help from a friend. Does she need anybody? She just needs someone to stop the bleeding. She’s still got to get the secret files on the Red Room from the Dark Room and deliver it to the Weeping Lion. No, this isn’t a kid’s book. That’s all spy stuff I just said. I swear. (Andrew)
