Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
ID GN $9.99 (Image) – Emma Rios’s dystopian tale was originally published as part of the Image Comics Island Anthology and is being collected in this fancy-dancy new Graphic Novel for your reading pleasure. What if you could get a body transplant? What if they could take your mind and place it in a new vessel? Would you still be you? How could you guarantee everything that you are would wind up in your new home? When you look in the mirror and see someone else’s face, would that fuck with your perception of self? Big time questions. Big time comic. Check it out this Wednesday. (Kris Johnson)
WONDER WOMAN #1 $2.99 (DC Comics) – She’s been around for 75 years. She’s got a new series by Greg Rucka and Liam Sharp. Everything should be great for the Amazon Princess, right? If that were true, it just wouldn’t be a comic book. The lasso of truth isn’t working. That’s really put’s Wonder Woman in a pickle as she can’t just take it down to the lasso shop and get it fixed. There’s no warranty on a truth lasso. Needless to say, Wondy’s fit to be tied…..get it? The answers lie in the dark secrets of Wonder Woman’s past…….as they always do with stuff like this. Find out if she’s still got the gift of keepin’ folks honest by picking up the book. (Andrew)
DOCTOR STRANGE #9 $3.99 (Marvel) – If you’re not reading Doctor Strange, you’re missing out on a lot of fun. Fantastic, mind-boggling, trippy-as-hell art from Chris Bachalo brings an absolute all-timer of a story by the great Jason Aaron to life in ‘The Last Days of Magic’. Strange and his cadre of de-powered magic users continue their search for the last remnants of mystical power while the Emperikul consolidates their power. But even if the good Doctor and his pals succeed in their mission, will it be enough? (Kris Johnson)
ACTION MAN #1 $3.99 (IDW) – This ain’t your daddy’s Action Man….literally. Action Man dies saving the world right at the beginning of this story (spoilers?) and it’s up to his protege to take up the mantle and be all that he can be. Come for the action…..stay for the man? That sounded a lot cooler in my head. (Andrew)
POWER MAN AND IRON FIST #5 $3.99 (Marvel) – The Heroes for Hire are officially back together and now is the time for the real fun to begin. If you’re not reading this book, you must not love awesome. (Kris Johnson)
DC: THE NEW FRONTIER TP $34.99 (DC Comics) – We were all saddened by the passing of Darwyn Cooke, one of comics greatest cartoonists, back in May. Now DC is re-releasing his seminal work, The New Frontier, in a brand spanking new edition that not only includes the original 6 issue miniseries but the one-shot special, Justice Legue: The New Frontier #1. Set during the cold war, the new heroes of the silver age must band together to stop an other-worldly threat from destroying the planet. It’s Cooke’s superhero masterpiece that will stand as one of the greatest DC comics of all time. If you haven’t checked it out, you need to now. (Andrew)
THE FLASH #1 $2.99 (DC Comics) – Ahh, The Flash. Always at the centre of DC’s latest shake-up, you are! As such, the Scarlett Speedster’s book seems a wise place to continue the journey into this Rebirth-ed universe, does it not? Why of course it does. Old Rogues, new speedsters, and fresh adventures are at hand, friends. Drink it in, maaaaaaaaan. (Kris Johnson)
POWER UP TP $19.99 (Boom) – There’s this prophecy that at a moment of planetary alignment, four great warriors would be gifted with special powers. The alignment must’ve been a little off as these powers have been granted to a washed-up athlete, a disillusioned twenty-something, a mother of two teens and a goldfish. Not your typical super team, amirite? Not your typical comic, either. Check out the trade collecting the complete limited series. (Andrew)
James Bond Vol 1 Vargr HC $19.99 (Dynamite) – James Bond is not a nice guy. He’s a hard-nosed asshole that gets things done, saves the goddamn world, and looks good doing it. Warren Ellis understands this. Jason Masters understand this. Together, they bring the closest thing to Ian Fleming’s 007 original novels to the comics page. If you’re a fan of Bond, spy stories, or just great writing, pick this bad boy up and give it a read or five. (Kris Johnson)
MS MARVEL #8 $3.99 (Marvel) – Looks like Kamala Khan is getting roped into this whole Civil War II nonsense as she’s called up to the battle and she’s in way over her head. Sometimes growing big can’t squash the problem. Is she going to come out of this mess a changed person? Probably. Will it be for the better? Vote’s still out on that one. One thing for sure is that with all this crossover stuff going on, you can rely on Ms. Marvel for having a down to earth, character driven story to get you through all of it. Event books may come and go but good characters are forever! (Andrew)
