Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
BETTY & VERONICA #1 $3.99 (Archie) – The greatest rivalry in the history of comics has returned with a brand new, ongoing series! Okay, okay, maybe it’s not the greatest rivalry. That title belongs to Professor X and Male Pattern Baldness. It’s gotta at least be in like the top 20, right? And hey, it’s the latest release in the absolutely awesome line-wide relaunch from the fine folks at Archie Comics featuring a creative team of Adam Hughes, Adam Hughes, and Adam Hughes. You can’t go wrong with this one, peeps! (Kris Johnson)
BLACK WIDOW #5 $3.99 (Marvel) – This new Black Widow series is the perfect action/adventure story. As Natasha continues to get pushed to the dark side by The Weeping Lion, we see Agent Elder of SHIELD hot on her trail. So will this be a game of cat and mouse or will the Widow have to catch this agent in her web as well? All I know is that the action will be hot and heavy and the art by Chris Samnee will continue to be some of the best work in mainstream comics. (Andrew)
THE CLOUD GN HC $24.99 (Boom) – From Archaia comes a brand new vision in fantasy suited to the imaginations of adults and children alike! A boy has a wish stolen from him and so he sets off on an adventure with his loyal wolf, Cloud, to find it and his missing father. Along the way he’ll encounter all manner of colourful creatures and fantastic situations but, as in all quests of self-discovery, the adventure won’t come without heartbreak. Take the journey on Wednesday. (Kris Johnson)
BLACK HAMMER #1 $3.99 (Dark Horse) – Hey look, it’s my second suggestion this week that has Black in the title. Huh. Anyways, Black Hammer is a new series from the mind of Jeff Lemire about a group of retired super heroes that live in a timeless farming town. But just like every other retired super hero team before them, they don’t get to stay retired. Just when they thought they were out, trouble pulls them back in! Nice going trouble, you did it again. (Andrew)
SPIDER-MAN #6 $3.99 (Marvel) – Sure, this is a Civil War II tie-in issue, but don’t worry about any of that. It’s Miles Morales. It’s Spider-Man. It’s great. Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli continue to produce the most consistently fun and entertaining superhero comic month in, month out, and ain’t no flavour-of-the-week-event bullshit gonna derail something so wonderful. Just grab and copy and you’ll see what I mean. Trust me friends, I’m a scientist. (*disclaimer: Not really a scientist) (Kris Johnson)
GREEN ARROW BY KEVIN SMITH TP $24.99 (DC Comics) – You guys remember when Smith wrote Green Arrow? That was some pretty fun shit. Ollie comes back from the dead. He has to defeat some weird guy who’s kidnapped a monster and then take down that Onomatopoeia guy. It’s got all the things we love about Green Arrow in one neat little trade. There’s even a reference to Ollie’s love of chili. Just one of the many reasons why I love this run. (Andrew)
SOMBRA #1 $3.99 (Boom) – Justin Jordan and Raul Trevino team up to peel back the layers of corruption, violence, and death that spread with the cancer that are the Mexican Cartels. A DEA agent, once thought dead while on-duty south of the border, resurfaces with murder on his mind. Looking to avoid a scandal, the US government tasks his daughter with putting an end to his rampage. Can she put a bullet in her own father or will Mexico be her grave? Is there a third, less terrible option? Crack this comic to find out. (Kris Johnson)
LUKE CAGE AVENGER TP $19.99 (Marvel) – That Luke Cage is one back motha-SHUT YOUR MOUTH! / But I’m talkin’ ’bout Cage. / We can dig it. One of the best Avengers of the modern era, Luke Cage is the man. Whether he’s telling Tony Stark to go fuck himself over the superhero registration act or making a deal with the devil (I mean the Green Goblin) to get his kid back, Cage is a character we love to read about. Now you can relive some of his cooler Avengers moments in this nifty new trade. Right on! (Andrew)
THE HUNT #1 $3.99 (Image) – The Hunt promises to blend Irish mythology with supernatural horror to create an all new experience for readers of the genre. I know very little else about this book, but the above sentence gives my brain a boner. (Kris Johnson)
FAITH #1 $3.99 (Valiant) – Hey remember that awesome miniseries I was talking about for the past few months? Yeah, the one I was rewriting song lyrics to promote. That’s the one. Well, Faith is now an ongoing series and Jody Hauser is bringing us some all new adventures for L.A.’s favourite super hero. It’s a rough life when you gotta fight crime, meet deadlines at work, date a guy who lives on the other side of the country and keep up to date on the latest comics and sci-fi television shows. But somehow she pulls it off. And now we’ll get to see her do it all in an ongoing title. I have Faith that fun times are ahead! (Andrew)
