Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.

Here we go.

STL010462CAPTAIN AMERICA: STEVE ROGERS #3 $3.99 (Marvel) – Now that everyone has finished spazzing out over the ‘Hail Hydra’ reveal, I think it’s high time folks jump back on board this series while the quality train in still running at full steam. Nick Spencer and Jesus Saiz are putting together an absolutely awesome Cap saga that not only brings the action but actually has a few insightful things to say about this crazy world we’re currently living in as well. So forget all the hype and just pick up this comic because it’s good, and good comics deserve all of our support. (Kris Johnson)

BATGIRL #1 $2.99 (DC Comics) – It’s time for some kick-ass tales starring Barbara Gordon. I will miss the previous creative team but Babs is in great hands as Hope Larson and Rafael Albuquerque have stepped up to the plate. In this new series, Batgirl is a bit of an international caped crusader of mystery as she heads to Japan to get some learning in the ass-kickin’ department. She’s gone to the far east to train with the best in combat. But things are never that simple, are they? While there, she runs into an old acquaintance and is dragged into a deadly mystery that only she can solve. All in a days work for the best of the bat-bunch. Note to Self: They should totally make a cartoon called Bat-Bunch. (Andrew)

OLD MAN LOGAN #9 $3.99 (Marvel) – It’s the best Wolverine series in years and if you’re a fan of the old Canucklehead on any level, you need to be reading it. Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino continue their modern masterpiece with this brand new arc entitled “The Last Ronin” and I couldn’t be more excited. Wolvie in Japan stories are almost always great and as we’re still getting to know this incarnation of the legendary X-Man, it should be interesting to see how he behaves in such a familiar Classic Logan setting. (Kris Johnson)

STL010249ROM #1 $4.99 (IDW)ROM‘s Back Baby! He’s here to do what he knows best, and what he knows best is fighting Dire Wraiths. So that’s exactly what he’s gonna do and Chris Ryall, Christos Gage and David Messina are gonna help him do that by writing and drawing what promises to be “the wildest new series of the year!” (Their words, not mine. I would’ve gone with “the wackiest comic of the past 365 days!”). Anyways, it’s sure to be a blast as this classic hero (and toy) deserves a reboot in the modern era. So let’s hear it for him! (Andrew)

NIGHTWING #1 $2.99 (DC Comics) – I love Dick. You love Dick. Pretty much everybody loves Dick. Dick is always a good time. Now this particular Dick may not be the biggest Dick around, but he gets the job done. It’s not about raw horsepower when it comes to Dick… It’s about agility and finesse. (Kris Johnson)

CAPTAIN KID #1 $3.99 (Aftershock) – If there’s one thing that Mark Waid does great, it’s writing fucked up heroes. Irredeemable and Incorruptible are great examples of this. So here comes Captain Kid: A middle-age man who’s got a pretty hum-drum life except for the fact that he can transform into a teenage superhero ANY TIME HE WANTS! Can we say MID-LIFE CRISIS? I’m pretty sure that’s the route this book is going to take. It is a “mature reader” title, after all. Time will tell just how fucked up things will get but my money’s on very. (Andrew)

STL011469MECHANISM #1 $3.99 (Image) – As humanity reels from the effects of an alien invasion, a prototype military robot is rushed into the field before it’s combat-ready in an attempt to maintain order. Its mission is one that places military dominance as the primary goal. But once out in the world, the robot falls in with a group of survivors and begins to truly understand what it is to be human. But is being human all it’s cracked up to be? (Kris Johnson)

TITANS #1 $2.99 (DC Comics)In Greek mythology, the Titans were greater even than the gods. They ruled their universe with absolute power. Will these Titans do the same? It’s a return to form for a team that’s looked pretty different over the past few years. Hopefully this new title will put the group back on track. If not, “I will break my foot off in your ass, and then you will run a mile!” (Andrew)

ADVENTURE TIME COMICS #1 $3.99 (Boom) – Lookee here! It’s one o’ those fun-timey comic books that you hear about in myths and legends! What’s that? You didn’t know comics can sometimes aspire to be nothing more than a rollicking good time? Well, it’s true and that’s just what this brand new Adventure Time series is all about. In this anthology series from BOOM!, the greatest cartoonists in all of comics have been let loose in the Land of Ooo to do whatever the hell it is they wanna do! So just who’ll be brining the funnin? I’m glad you asked, my inquisitive friend. This inaugural issue is kicking things off with heavy hitters Katie Cook, Tony Millionaire, and Art Baltazar! What whaaaaat. Check it out, Wednesday. (Kris Johnson)

STL018052HOWARD THE DUCK #9 $3.99 (Marvel) – Here comes the comic I’ve been waiting for! Lea Thompson needs a detective and there’s only one duck who can help. Welcome to the weirdest kinda, sorta reunion in comics/80s film history. We know that Chip Zdarsky and Joe Quinones have delivered some amazing stories with this title so far. We’ve seen comedy, action, adventure and even an extremely heart-warming scene in the last issue between Howard and Beverly Switzler. But all of that was just a warm up to the hardest thing EVER to pull off in a comic: The celebrity cameo. From what I’ve seen, it looks like they nailed it. You be the judge this Wednesday. (Andrew)
