Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
ALL STAR BATMAN #1 $4.99 (DC Comics) – A new All-Star series is at hand from a pair of legendary creators! John Romita Jr. and Scott Snyder come together for the first time for a bat-flavoured riff on The Defiant Ones (Don’t know that one? Get thee to Amazon, young grasshopper). Batman has to get Two-Face out of Gotham to face justice. Only problem is, he’s short on toys and hand-cuffed to the duplicitous deacon of deceptive duality! Oh yeah, and Big Bad Harv has put a bounty on the Bat, causing every assassin, bounty hunter and ordinary Joe in need of cold hard cash to gear up for a flying rodent hunt. Sounds like a bad day to be Bruce. (Kris Johnson)
THE ACCUSED #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – Okay, for those keeping score at home, the heroes are divided and Bruce Banner is dead because of it. Hawkeye (aka Hawkguy) was the trigger man (or arrow man, I guess) and now stands trial for his actions. Matt Murdock (aka: that Daredevil guy) is on the prosecution. It looks like an open and shut case but something smells rotten in Denmark (or New York as the case may be). And if there’s anybody who can tell you if something smells rotten, it’s that Daredevil guy. That’s why I have him smell all the food in my fridge before I throw it out. If something’s spoiled, he’s the guy to go to. He’s also the guy when it comes to lawyer-ing and detective-ing, so it’s good he’s in this comic. (Andrew)
SPREAD #15 $3.99 (Image) – What is it with places called Sanctuary? They are never actually a Sanctuary of any kind. I think as rule of thumb, if you ever encounter a place called Sanctuary, please, just… just don’t go in. Just turn around, walk away, and try your hand with whatever awful alternate option is available to you because I’m telling you, that Sanctuary just ain’t worth it. There’ll be cannibals, or zombie hordes, or serial torturers, or like a guy who sucks the marrow from your bones while you’re still alive or some shit. Just awful, okay? No and the gang find that out the hard way this week. They didn’t get the memo. (Kris Johnson)
WAR STORIES #19 $3.99 (Avatar) – Garth Ennis brings us a good, ol’ fashioned war story called Vampire Squadron. No,they’re not real vampires. They’re a group of pilots from different countries who’s squads got destroyed. Wanted by no one (not even each other) they banded together and flew in defense of Britain during the Blitz. It’s like The Dirty Dozen, except they’re pilots instead of criminals, and none of them are American, and there’s no Charles Bronson, and…..okay, so they’re not like The Dirty Dozen at all. They’re pretty bad-ass, though. (Andrew)
ALL NEW ALL DIFFERENT AVENGERS ANNUAL #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – Normally annuals are garbage and a complete waste of time. But sometimes, just sometimes, they do something fun and different with the format and pure magic results. I think (I hope) that this is one of those times. Why? Because we finally, FINALLY get to read some of Kamala Khan’s Avengers fanfic. That’s right, all of that fan-girling that Ms. Marvel has been doing in private about her teammates will finally be brought to light via a series of vignettes from G Willow Wilson, Mahmud Asrar, Mark Waid, Chip Zdarsky and more! Fingers crossed that this delivers on the high concept. Could be the most fun on the shelf this week. (Kris Johnson)
HELLBOUND LIFESTYLE GN $10.00 (Big Planet/Retrofit) – Kaeleigh Forsyth took notes on her phone every time she was in a weird situation. Then, her friend Alabaster Pizzo took those notes and drew illustrations. Now they have a graphic novel. It’s just as simple as that, kids. The moral of this story is, “Start taking notes on your phone.”
BLACK MONDAY MURDERS #1 $4.99 (Image) – Jonathan Hickman teams up with Tomm Coker for this new noir series in which the various spheres of magic are basically black arts-infused crime families. Vampires, mages, sorcerers, black popes, other monsterly types, aaaaaall of ‘em are present and accounted for and looking for their fair slice of the American Dream. I’m sure everyone will be super-nice to each other and no one will get hurt or have their souls shredded or whatever. (Kris Johnson)
DEATHSTROKE REBIRTH #1 $2.99 (DC Comics) – He’s the world’s greatest assassin! Everybody knows that. How could you not? The guy’s the best there is at what he does and what he does…..I was asked to cease and desist on that last sentence by the lawyers at Marvel on grounds of “gimmick infringement”. Anyways, our pal Slade is getting stalked by an enemy he can’t see and has to deal with a past he can’t reconcile with in order to man up and save the life he’s got currently. Is there redemption in Deathstroke’s future or is killin’ and two colour uniforms all he knows? We’ll know after this one and knowing is half….damn, just got a cease and desist from Hasbro now. Not my day. (Andrew)
OLD MAN LOGAN #10 $3.99 (Marvel) – The first instalment of the The Last Ronin storyline was just fantastic and I can’t wait to see what Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino have on tap for part 2. As threads from Old Man Logan’s past in the Wasteland somehow converge with the trials of his present, Wolvie must contend with an old threat as well as something new clawing at him through the ages. Is the Wasteland inevitable? Will Logan ever truly find peace? Maybe we’ll get a few steps closer to the answer on Wednesday. (Kris Johnson)
ALL NEW X-MEN #12 $3.99 (Marvel) – He’s a mutant with now-cosmic powers from the 60s living in our era. She’s a clone of the most feral mutant ever who took up his mantle after he died. Who says their love is doomed? Probably anyone who’s got a clear view of the situation. He’s not even suppose to be here today! She’s got a ton of issues, what with being a clone and all. Neither of them are actually all that stable. But that’s just my opinion. These two crazy kids are in love so who’re we to stand in their way. I’m sure their relationship will continue to be a great source of entertainment for us all. Let’s face it, that’s all we’re here for anyways, right? So stop listening to me and just pick up this issue already. Go on now….GO. I’m done. Why are you still here?
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
