Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
STEVEN UNIVERSE #1 $3.99 (Boom) – For those of you who don’t know, Steven Universe is an awesome cartoon with a great message, beautiful animation, and an unstoppable sense of fun. The early word on the comic is that it carries on that tradition wonderfully. For those of you who do know about Steven Universe… You’re—You’re not even reading this are you? You guys have already run out, bought this comic in the future, and have now traveled back in time to the present to enjoy its awesomeness. Well? How is it? That good, huh? Figured. (Kris Johnson)
BLACK WIDOW #11 $3.99 (Marvel) – We’re almost near the end of one of the best damn spy books to ever come out of the Marvel U. There’s only two more issues after this! So what’s everybody’s favourite redheaded super-assassin doing with herself these days? Doing what she does best: tracking down all the new young, female assassins that graduated from the NEW Red Room, saving their targets and trying to save their souls in the process as well. Kinda tough when you’re on the outs with S.H.I.E.L.D. and the telepath you were using to track everybody down is now dead. You know it’s hard out here being a widow / when she’s tryin’ to get these girls to stop the death /. (Andrew)
ALL STAR BATMAN #7 $4.99 (DC Comics) – Scott Snyder continues to tick boxes off of his bucket list of the Who’s Who of Batman’s Rogues gallery and will no doubt deliver yet another excellent re-imagining with this tale of villainy of the super-leafy variety. This time, his muse is that fiery femme fatale, the deadly and seductive Poison Ivy. With art from the unbelievable Tula Lotay, this is one you’re not gonna want to miss. (Kris Johnson)
RED SONJA #2 $3.99 (Dynamite) – LIVE, FROM NEW YORK, IT’S RED SONJA! That’s right, Big Red’s in the Big Apple and she’s being hunted by the followers of Kulan Gath…..that damn, dirty Gath. I hate that guy. Anyways, because she’s super awesome, she’s adapting pretty quickly to her new surroundings and has made a few allies. I’m pretty sure that it won’t be long until the hunted becomes the hunter and Sonja kicks some major ass like she always does. It’s good to have some constants in life, kids. Redheads kicking ass is one of them. (Andrew)
UNWORTHY THOR #4 (OF 5) $3.99 (Marvel) – So close, yet so far! The Odinson has Ultimate Mjolnir within his sights, but Proxima Midnight, Black Swan, Thanos, and a mysterious Man in Black stand in his way. The former Thor and his horse-faced pal, Beta Ray Bill, have their work cut out for them, but if there’s one kinda work that Space Vikings are pretty much made for, it’s punching cosmic jerk-asses in their various mushes. Sounds like a grand ole time, if you ask me, and that’s before you take into consideration that it’s been heavily hinted that the Man in Black is none other than the long-dead Gor the mutha-friggin’-God Butcher. If that turns out to be the case, Andrew may just have to carry on with this column on his own because I will have exploded into a fine, overjoyed, meaty mist. (Kris Johnson)
MOTOR CRUSH #3 $3.99 (Image) – There ain’t much to say here except that this book is for people that like high octane storytelling and fun, compelling artwork. If you like those two things, then you should totally check this book out. If not, I hear there’s a Dilbert collection around here somewhere. (Andrew)
POWER MAN AND IRON FIST #13 $3.99 (Marvel) – Number 13 is unlucky for Mister Luke Cage, as Jessica Jones has split and taken their daughter Danielle with her! Luke is understandably losing it from the grief, but his pal Danny is nowhere to be found. What the hell is Iron Fist’s problem? Jerk can’t even be there for his pal when he needs him. Hmph. Huh? What’s that? He’s busy getting the crap kicked out of him by a crap-ton of dudes. Oh. Well. I guess that buys him a little leeway. Very slight, though. (Kris Johnson)
JESSICA JONES #5 $3.99 (Marvel) – Hey! Did you see that? Kris just mentioned the main character of the book I’m recommending while telling us about the book he’s recommending. Crazy, right? And guess what? You know how Luke’s so mad that Jessica took their baby and left? Well, she kinda has a pretty good reason for leaving and it’s in this here book. Funny how that works out. The little you know…..because you know very little. (Andrew)
STAR WARS DARTH VADER HC VOL 02 $39.99 (Marvel) – Have you guys read this Marvel Darth Vader series yet? I should hope at this point my constant haranguing would have gotten you to at least pick up an issue or two. I mean that’s what gets people to do stuff, right? Constantly haranguing the shit out of them? I hear people like that. Anyway, if the nagging didn’t work, how ‘bout grade school insults? I know Andrew always like it when I do that. I think I’ll give it a go: *clears throat* If you don’t pick up this awesome hardcover collection of Darth Vader stories, bringing together the complete Vader Down saga as well as the final issues of Marvel’s Darth Vader series proper, you, my good sir or madam, are a stupid head. How’d that work for you? Yeah? I feel pretty good about it, too. (Kris Johnson)
BLACK SCIENCE #28 $3.99 (Image) – Unlike my co-writer, I do not need to resort to childhood name calling to convey just how great a book or an issue or a series is. I can put my words to much better use by singing the praises of the Black Science comic series. This is a book that’s gotten the chance to play in every genre. Hard Sci-Fi, Historical Drama, Fantasy Epic, AND NOW: Superheroes! If you’re looking for a book that gives you a taste of everything, look no further than this comic. Rick Remender is doing great things at Image right now…..and this is one of them! (Andrew)
