Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
IRON FIST #2 $3.99 (Marvel) – While the first issue was a lot of set up and left a fair bit to be desired as a result, the promise and potential of what’s to come keeps this second issue of Iron Fist on my radar this week. The invitation to a new mystical island Kung Fu tournament has been delivered. Danny Rand has seemingly accepted. Now there’s nothing left but the fighting. Iron Fist may not be so Shou-Lao-tastic these days, but I’m sure he can still chop a mean socky. (Kris Johnson)
JUGHEAD #14 $3.99 (Archie) – That Jughead, he’s goes BIG or goes home. If he hits, he hits BIG. And if he misses, you better believe he misses BIG. It appears that in this issue, he accidentally ruins everyone in Riverdale’s lives and has drawn the attention of the ENTIRE internet by doing so. Can he find a way out of this mess? It’s Jughead, so of course he can. And he’ll do so in a BIG way, guaranteed. (Andrew)
ROCK CANDY MOUNTAIN #1 $3.99 (Image) – The world’s toughest hobo fights a whole mess of other hobos in post-World War Two America while searching for the mythical Rock Candy Mountain! Hobo fights, maaaaan! Hobo fights! Also the Devil with a capital D! This book just sounds weird. I’m checking it out. Just gotta find my damn bindle and I’ll be on my way. (Kris Johnson)
KILL SHAKESPEARE: PAST IS PROLOGUE JULIET #1 (OF 4) $3.99 (IDW) – Our boy, Conor McCreery is at it again with another tale from the land of Kill Shakespeare. Juliet’s back and she’s better than ever…..well maybe not ever. She’s trying to solve the murder of her mother. Capulet blood has been spilled and if she doesn’t figure out whodunnit, she could be next. Corin Howell handles art chores on this one. Get some bloody culture mixed in with your funny books this week. (Andrew)
BLACK CLOUD #1 $3.99 (Image) – A girl exiled from a world of dreams and sentenced to a directionless life on Earth, struggles to fill her days with purpose and reclaim the magic that’s building inside her. Will she ever find a way back home? She holds the key to her return inside her, but will that key be used for good or evil? Jason Latour, Ivan Brandon, and Greg Hinkle team up for this new series from Image that will present new visions of our own world, as well as the myriad realities that occupy our dreams. Should be a good one. (Kris Johnson)
JESSICA JONES #7 $3.99 (Marvel) – Man, does Jessica Jones have a shit life right now. I thought things were tough all the way back in her first series, but these days she’s got it even worse as her life has completely fallen apart and she’s struggling to put it all back together again. Brian Michael Bendis has put her through the ringer once again and he’s not letting up any time soon. Now Jessica has found out a secret that may even be too hot for her. My guess is she’s gonna find some unsuspecting asshole to take it out on before the issue’s through. Good times. (Andrew)
LITTLE ARCHIE ONE SHOT $4.99 (Archie) – Art Baltazar can always be counted on to bring the good times. Now that he’s getting to play in the sandbox of the newly reinvigorated Archie-verse (a.k.a. Good Times Central), you better believe that those good times will be squared… or possibly even cubed! Can the universe handle such good times or will the confluence of so much good-timiness result in some sort of good time paradox?! Only one way to find out… That’s right. Buy the book. (Kris Johnson)
KIM REAPER #1 $3.99 (Oni) – We’ve all been there at some point. We’re crushing on someone and finally get the courage to ask them out. That’s where Becka is when she approaches Kim to ask her to go to the pub. What she doesn’t know is that Kim’s got a part time job as a reaper of souls for the underworld and she kinda interrupts her work. Like “following her into a ghostly portal and setting off a chain of events that will send them on a journey of life and death” kind of interrupting. Maybe things will work out for these two crazy kids in the end. Either way, the journey sounds like it’s going to be a lot of fun! (Andrew)
WE STAND ON GUARD TP $14.99 (Image) – I can never pass up a chance to immerse myself in more Steve Skroce artwork and neither should you, ya’ll! Brian K. Vaughan and the aforementioned artiste extraordinaire team up for this super-fun and ultra-gory tale of a post-apocalyptic future in which Canadian freedom fighters wage a guerrilla campaign against an invading army of technologically superior Americans. It’s a damn fine read, and you can see it all in this brand new collection, so pick it up, goddammit! (Kris Johnson)
BULLSEYE #3 (OF 5) $3.99 (Marvel) – Alright! It’s the big throw down that Bullseye’s been wanting. He’s found the Columbian Drug Cartel’s compound and is facing them head on. The odds are stacked against Bullsy, but that’s just the way he likes it. Ed Brisson and Guillermo Sanna have been bringing us the chaotic thrill ride that we’ve all wanted from everybody’s favourite assassin. In a story where there’s no good guy, the bad guy gets to be twice as bad, right? That’s definitely the case here. See the bodies pile up in this one. (Andrew)
