Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
OLD MAN LOGAN #21 $3.99 (Marvel) – Jeff Lemire’s run on Old Man Logan is winding down and what better way to go out than with an in-depth examination of the entire life history of the dude formerly known as Wolverine. Yessir (or madam), ‘Past Lives’ begins here and is set to explore Wolvie’s existence as far back as the 1800’s all the way up to the present day. What new wrinkles will we learn about this familiar, yet very different character? How will his past differ from that of the Wolverine we’ve known and loved for so long? What will it mean for his future or the possibility of returning to the timeline from whence he came? Well friend, it seems like we’ve all got some questions here. Luckily, this new arc is all about answers. Satisfaction galore. (Kris Johnson)
THE FIX TP VOL 02 $14.99 (Image) – If you haven’t been keeping up with L.A.’s funniest pair of crooked cops, you need to correct that shit by getting you hands on this here trade. Roy has made a big mess of a sweet set up. Now he’s meeting the mayor and things are only going to get more fucked up from there. Meanwhile, Mac has really bonded with his new partner: Prentzels, the drug sniffing dog. Teaming with him has made him want to be a better cop. The problem is that’s the opposite of what his “other” boss wants him to be. Funniest damn comic on the stands today. Pick it up and enjoy your life. (Andrew)
EC ARCHIVES HAUNT OF FEAR HC VOL 04 $49.99 (Dark Horse) – Dark Horse has been doing tremendous work with the EC collections they’ve been putting out for the past several years and the awesomeness is set to continue with this fourth hardcover volume! Bringing together a number of classic issues from the old Haunt of Fear series, your favourite ghouls (the Old Witch, the Vault-Keeper, and the Crypt Keeper) are all represented as they regale readers with the kind of macabre delights that got a whole bunch of oversensitive public representatives’ panties in a twist. It just doesn’t get much better. (Kris Johnson)
BLACK PANTHER CREW #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – The streets have new protectors and they’re all bad-asses! After the death of a Harlem activist, Black Panther teams up with Luke Cage, Storm, Misty Knight and Manifold to solve the case. Hey, isn’t Storm the Panther’s ex-wife? That’ll make things awkward, I would think. Anyways, any new book with Misty Knight in it already has my money. Go pay yours to check out this tale that’ll “set the stage for a big story in the Marvel Universe’s near future.” (Isn’t that what they all do?) (Andrew)
SEVEN TO ETERNITY #5 $3.99 (Image) – Seven to Eternity returns this week with the first chapter in a brand new story arc! Rick Remender and Jerome Opena continue the saga of Adam Osidis and his Mosak (for the moment) allies. The Mud King has been captured. But even in chains, his power is vast. Will the Seven complete their journey to have the King face true justice? Or will they be waylaid on the road by threats from afar and others closer to home? Pick up this wonderfully written and beautifully rendered book this Wednesday for the answer… or, at least, the hint of one. (Kris Johnson)
LITTLE GUARDIANS #1 $3.99 (Scout) – Everybody’s got a destiny. But what if you were switched at birth and you’d been put on the path that someone else was destined for? That’s what’s happening here in Little Guardians. Thoom was suppose to be a great warrior, but lives his life as a farmer whose prone to violence. Idem was meant to be a shop owner but stuggles to keep his summoning orb in check. Add in some calamity that’s plaguing the town’s Zucchini Festival and you’ve got an entertaining comedy of errors. This new series looks like a real hoot. (Andrew)
ROSE #1 $3.99 (Image) – A new fantasy series from Meredith Finch and Ig Gaura care of the fine folks at Image Comics? Sounds like a quality proposition! Tell me more, self. Well, don’t mind if I do, also-self. You’re a gracious and wise gentlemen and a snappy dresser to boot! Rose follows the adventures of a young girl attempting to form a bond with a giant and terrifying cat-monster-dealie. Why would she do such a thing? To become the champion her people need and defeat the sorceress Drucilla, of course?! Naturally. Naturally. (Kris Johnson)
AVENGERS COMPLETE CELESTIAL MADONNA SAGA TP $39.99 (Marvel) – Celestial Madonna / Avengers at your feet / wondering how you can escape Kang, the creep / It’s probably the most underrated Avengers stories of all time. There’s action, time travel, and daring-do! There’s also a whole lotta Mantis. Hey, isn’t she starring the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie next month? I do believe she is. Well this is perfect timing, isn’t it? Get yourself this trade and get a little backstory on an upcoming movie star. (Andrew)
DEADPOOL VS PUNISHER #1 (OF 5) $3.99 (Marvel) – The Bank. An underworld figure spoken of only in whispers and spoken to only when one has amassed a large enough criminal fortune to warrant his attention. A man responsible for the safeguarding of all of the funds of every major criminal and mercenary in the Marvel Universe. A man that Frank Castle, a.k.a. The Motherfucking Punisher, is looking to make very, very dead. Only problem with that is The Bank is totally best buds with a chap you may be familiar with by the name of Deadpool… and no one ices out Deadpool’s pals without him having something to say about it. And y’know, saying something about it is kind of his thing. (Kris Johnson)
GODSHAPER #1 $3.99 (Boom) – In a world where there’s a god for every person and a person for every god, there are those who are not paired up. They’re called shapers and they have the power to augment your god for you. They don’t have a god to call their own, so this power is the only way they can get by in life, trading their services in kind. Ennay is one such shaper who travels from town to town, looking for a hot meal and a new gig. His life gets a tad stranger when he crosses paths with Bud, a god without a human to call his own. Good times ahead. (Andrew)
