In the past few days, we have been so inundated with movie and television news, it was hard to pick one topic to focus on. So you know what that means? GRAB BAG TIME!
New Hellboy Film
Looks like a new Hellboy movie is in the works but without Del Toro or Ron Pearlman. Apparently, Stranger Things actor David Harbor is attached. It will be a reboot and possibly rated R. On one hand, I’m sad as there was definitely a third chapter to the Del Toro films yet to be told. On the other hand, while I will be the first to tell you an R rating for a superhero movie is a trend we don’t necessarily need, I do like the idea of Hellboy visiting some darker corners.
Judge Dredd Headed to the Small Screen?
Judge Dredd: Mega-City One was announced as a television series in development involving the team that helped put together the Dredd film. It’s currently not clear if this will be a continuation of that film (I would guess it won’t be far from that for budget reasons) or if Karl Urban is headed back to the helmet but I for one am trying not to get too excited, at least until it starts filming. While I enjoyed Dredd a lot, I hope they will leave the door open for some of the weird elements that have become such a part of the Dredd comic over the years like the Dark Judges. Speaking of judges, I would like to point out to the showrunners that there is a judge drawn by Nick Percival that’s named after me. I would be happy to suit up as my namesake and die on film.
Black Lightning Gets His Own Show
Black Lightning has gotten a series order on the CW. While the CW shows have been great about promoting diversity within the supporting cast of their shows, this is the first DC superhero show starring a man of color. I like the premise of Black Lightning coming out retirement as opposed to the show starting with the usual origin story. It hasn’t been confirmed that it’s part of the Arrowverse but there’s a solid chance that it is. Look for it as a midseason replacement.
New Blade Runner 2049 Trailer
The latest trailer for Blade Runner 2049 dropped. I’m cautiously excited. Blade Runner is in my top ten films of all time. I’m currently even working on a costume and prop construction based on the original film. My main question is, “Which ending of Blade Runner is this a sequel to?” It’s a small detail but it can have some interesting story consequences depending on which version of the first film is considered canon.
Now on to a personal note. I am currently working like a dog. That’s not a complaint mind you. But there is there’s a lot on my plate right now. Currently (PLUG ALERT) I have a weekly column for Alan Cross (which is eventually going to become a book), a podcast which I host and produce, a day job and a novel that has been getting the short end of my attention stick. While there is some time in between versions, overall I have written 205 pieces for Fear and Loathing in Geekdom and I need to lighten the load. So, starting this week, Fear and Loathing will be coming out every two weeks. This space should allow me the time for all of my projects plus a family life. I hope you dear readers will continue to follow me.
All two of you. That’s all for this week’s Grab Bag.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
