Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
REDNECK #2 $3.99 (Image) – The vampire clan known as the Bowmans have done a tremendous job flying under the radar in the small Texas town of Sulphur Springs for hundreds of years. They ran their BBQ joint without incident, happily drank their cows blood, and didn’t eat any of the mostly oblivious normal folks inhabiting the county. They kept the peace…Until last issue. Some of the younger vamps got a little stir crazy, hit the town, and ran afoul of some local yokels. Blood was spilled. Humans died. In retaliation, vampires got strung up and met the rising sun. Now, the old hatreds are boiling over and war seems inevitable. Good stuff. For us, obviously. Not the Bowmans. ‘Natch. Donny Cates and Lisandro Estherren have a big, fat hit on their hands and if you ain’t already reading it, get on board this week! (Kris Johnson)
I AM GROOT #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – Another week, another Guardian gets his own title. But thanks to a popular film at the cinema, Groot’s stuck as a child’s size version of himself on a strange planet with no one to help him. This little sappling’s gotta go it alone on an unknown world in an attempt to make it back to his family. But there’s nothing to worry about. He is Groot. He’s got this. (Andrew)
VICTOR LAVALLE’S DESTROYER #1 $3.99 (Boom) – Noted author of non-picture books, Victor LaValle, brings his unique brand of modern horror to comics for very the first time. In this new series, brilliant doctor Jo Baker loses her son to a police shooting. In her quest for vengeance and justice, she turns to the more shadowed branches of her family tree for answers to her dilemma… and discovers a dark hope. Jo Baker, it seems, is the last living descendant of Victor Frankenstein and her bloodline provides the key to resurrection. Unfortunately for Jo, her actions attract the attention of her ancestor’s Monster and it may spell the end of all humanity. Bummer. (Kris Johnson)
SAMARITAN VERITAS #1 $3.99 (Image) – Hey, say you got a problem with a big military contractor and you want to destroy them. How do you go about doing it? I don’t know, give away all their research for free? Sounds like a good start, right? That’s one woman’s plan and it just might work. The only problem is said military contractor has now sicked the U.S. government on her and they don’t care to let her live to see her plan through. No wonder she hates these contractor guys. They sound like dicks. (Andrew)
SEVEN TO ETERNITY #6 $3.99 (Image) – Rick Remender and Jerome Opena are crafting something special with this tale of Adam Osidis and his struggle against the God of Whispers in the land of Zhal. The art is predictably gorgeous given the talent involved. The characters are fully realized and layered and the I honestly have no idea which direction the story will go given the myriad possibilities Remender has already laid out. It’s the best kind of fantasy epic. Check it out. (Kris Johnson)
STAR-LORD ANNUAL #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – Chip Zdarsky gets to tell one more story featuring Peter Quill and this time, IT’S A SPACE WESTERN! Quill crash lands on a desert planet and takes on the role of the mysterious stranger who comes into town and notices that things ain’t right. There’s a mean bastard making things hard for the good townsfolk who needs to be taught a lesson. Star-Lord is just the guy to teach him that lesson. Find out if Peter rides off into the sunset by picking up the book. (Andrew)
SAUCER STATE #1 (OF 6) $3.99 (IDW) – A female victim of alien abduction buries her trauma down deep, gets her shit together and becomes the President of the United States. Once in office, she does the only logical thing and pledges to use all of the impressive resources at her disposal to find those extraterrestrial shitheels that did her wrong and put the screws to them. What truths will she discover? What repercussions will be experienced by the country she serves? Find out when the sequel to Saucer Country begins this Wednesday! (Kris Johnson)
DEADLY CLASS #28 $3.99 (Image) – This book is crazy and I love it. Just when you think you know what the score is, Remender and Craig reveal a new wrinkle that knocks you on your ass. Sometimes dead ain’t dead and a savior’s not a savior. Saya’s about to get an offer she can’t refuse. Well, she could refuse it, but then the story wouldn’t continue. So she’s probably gonna take that offer. (Andrew)
PLASTIC #2 (OF 5) $3.99 (Image) – Listen, this is a weird comic. It’s not gonna be for everyone. Seriously. I cannot stress that enough. That said, for the folks out there who think a love affair between a homicidal, government trained psychopath and his favourite blow up doll acting as the leverage for a Louisiana mob boss to force said psychopath to perform some of that sweet, sweet murdering on his behalf sounds like it could make for a unique and compelling story, you’re gonna find a lot to enjoy here. (Kris Johnson)
THE ARCHIES ONE SHOT $4.99 (Archie) – The Archies. A band that most of us have known our whole lives. You’d think by now they’d have a storied history of drugs and rehab and redemption. But no, this isn’t a Behind the Music special. This one shot is about everybody’s favourite redheaded boy trying to make his singer/song writer dreams a reality. But sometimes your Rock n Roll aspirations have some hard hitting effects on your friends. Okay, so maybe this is a Behind the Music special. (Andrew)
