Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
REDNECK #6 $3.99 (Image) – The Bowmans have discovered the source of their recent woes and unfortunately, it ain’t someone they can easily tear the head off of. With the police bearing down on their homestead and time to escape running out, how can the Bowmans hope to get out of this one without totally destroying the somewhat peaceful lives they’ve built for themselves? My guess is they go full MacGruber and start ripping throats. But that’s gonna leave a helluva mess. (Kris Johnson)
RED SONJA #9 $3.99 (Dynamite) – Red Sonja is trekking across America on her quest to get back to her home. She’s gotta stay one step ahead of the law and get by with a little help from her friends as she heads through the wild west. Amy Chu is writing some great stories with the “fish outta water” element….or is it “bad-ass warrior woman outta water”? Either way works, I’m sure. (Andrew)
GENERATIONS: MORALES & PARKER SPIDER-MAN #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – Yeah sure, we’ve read plenty of stories at this point in which Peter Parker teams up with the younger Miles Morales version of everyone’s favourite Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man for some web-swinging shenanigans. But THIS time Miles will be traveling back in time for a team-up of the teenage variety. Yessir, Mr. Morales will come face to face with “Puny” Parker while he’s only just begun his career in long pyjamas. I for one, can’t wait to see what they make of each other. The potential for tremendous character moments is high in this one, peeps. Hopefully Miles’s mom doesn’t try to make out with him at the Enchantment Under The Sea Dance. (Kris Johnson)
FIRST STRIKE #4 $3.99 (IDW) – This is Crazy! Cobra is still wining the war on Cybertron? How? They never win anything. Oh, it’s because Starscream is being a little bitch and won’t let the Joes stop Cobra. That makes sense then. I hope he corrects himself before Cobra wrecks ups his hood for good. Those blue lasers and red lasers can really leave a mark when they finally hit something. (Andrew)
MARVEL LEGACY #1 $5.99 (Marvel) – Marvel re-sets the table with the help of the absolutely legendary Thor God Of Thunder creative team of Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic. In this massive 50-page special, we’ll be taken to the beginning of the Marvel Universe, spend a little time with some prehistoric Avengers, see a dead hero make their somewhat-kinda-sorta long awaited return, and then hop on over to the present day where a whole bunch of classic heroes will be reclaiming what’s theirs. Yep, this is Marvel’s attempt at a mea culpa after a fair amount of pissing pretty much every subsection of fandom off. Old classics are back. New heroes will be introduced. Here’s hoping the House of Ideas knocks this one outta the park and gets back to making great comics that don’t have “Thor” in the title. (Kris Johnson)
SEX CRIMINALS TP VOL 04 FOURGY $16.99 (Image) – The latest trade of this hilarious and heartfelt series from Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky. I don’t really have to write anything else here. That sentence alone is a license to print sweet comicbook money. (Just so you know, sweet comicbook printed money is not accepted by any stores or services.) (Andrew)
MIGHTY THOR #23 $3.99 (Marvel) – Hey look! A comic with “Thor” in the title! That’s how you know it’s great, y’know? The War Thor has gone too far, almost snuffing out thousands of innocent lives in Muspelheim while seeking the end of Sindr, daughter of Surtur, last issue. He was halted by Thor and her mighty Mjolnir, but the problem is Ultimate Mjolnir seems to be that storied hammer’s match and it is being wielded by a still very extremely pissed off and possibly possessed Volstagg. Will Jane be able to stop her friend and return him to his senses before he crosses a line he can’t come back from? Only readers of great comics with “Thor” in the title will find out! (Kris Johnson)
LAZARUS X+66 #3 (OF 6) $3.99 (Image) – I never knew how much I really wanted to get some in depth one-shot stories of the secondary characters in Lazarus until this miniseries came out. It’s must reading for any Lazarus fan as it’s hella fun! This issue, we take a look at Joe and Bobbie Barrett (the parents from the Lift storyline) as they try to find freedom in their gilded cage that is their home in San Francisco. Do they want to stay in Carlyle territory and never truly be free? What makes this issue even more awesome is artwork by Justin Greenwood, who’s worked on another little Rucka book called Stumptown. Awesomeness all around! (Andrew)
FU JITSU #1 $3.99 (Aftershock) – In this new series from Aftershock Comics and creators Jai Nitz and Wes St. Claire, the non-aging, 100 year old, world’s smartest “boy” battles his arch-nemesis, Robert Wadlow (aka the World’s Tallest Man) while glad-handing with Gandhi and Johnny Unitas. He’s also avoiding assassination attempts by the one and only James Dean. Yes, you just read the preceding sentence right. I know, you will be buying this comic. (Kris Johnson)
GENERATIONS: CAPTAIN AMERICAS #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – So you know the drill here. Heroes displaced in time and fighting along side different versions of their mentors/partners. In this story, Sam Wilson gets sent back to WWII and teams up with Steve Rogers and Bucky for some Nazi-punching good times. That’s sounds like a good time to me! Sign me up for some of that. Nick Spencer and Paul Renaud give you some double Cap action with a side order of teen sidekick soufflé. That sounds like a well balanced meal. (Andrew)
