Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
THE DAMNED #5 $3.99 (Oni) – What’s Halloween without demons, devils, and dead men? Not much, I tells ya! Luckily, Oni Press is still publishing this tremendous prohibition era, supernatural, noir comic series from the mind of Cullen Bunn. So you’re pretty much set in that regard. In this issue, everything’s coming to a head. That means somebody’s gonna be a real boy again and someone else is gonna sleep with the fishes real permanent like. Will it be Pauly Bones or our man Eddie coming out on top? Pick this up come Wednesday and we’ll find out together, see? (Kris Johnson)
DC HOUSE OF HORROR #1 $9.99 (DC Comics) – Halloween is just around the corner. What better way to get ready for than by reading some scary stories from DC comics. Martha Kent goes toe to toe with an alien creature that lands on her farm! A woman possessed by the spirit of an Amazon murderer tears shit up! The last Justice League member fights an unknown horror! This is all very exciting. My 10 bucks is as good as gone. I’m ready to get creeped out and I’m willing to pay for it. (That last sentence has nothing to do with the comic. It’s a known fact.) (Andrew)
PUNISHER: THE PLATOON #2 (OF 6) $3.99 (Punisher) – I absolutely loved Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s Punisher: Born mini. Some might say a little too much. Those people are fools, of course, and we shall never speak of them again! Instead, we’ll speak about just how excellent, against all odds, the first issue of the Ennis’s Born follow-up was and how this second issue looks poised to be even better. The table has been set. Frank Castle is in Nam. He’s taken charge of his first command. He’s made his first ruthless leadership decision and has unknowingly put himself at odds with one of the greatest killers within the ranks of Viet Cong. Of course, we know Frank survives his time in “the Shit”. But just how big of a piece will he leave behind as a result of his role in the infamous conflict? The answer, of course, is a massive one. How massive? Read this book to find out. (Kris Johnson)
HACK/SLASH: RESURRECTION #1 $3.99 (Image) – Cassie Hack is BACK, Jack! I’m so happy I got to type that. My job is done here…..oh wait, I guess I should tell you about the comic, right? I think that writer Tini Howard summed up the story best when she was on Geek Hard two weeks ago. Take a listen to that episode and she’ll fill you in. Go on now. We’ll wait. (Andrew)
BATMAN: THE MERCILESS #1 $3.99 (DC Comics) – How have the Batman: Metal one-shots been so good?! SERIOUSLY! HOW??!! It just doesn’t make any sense. One-shot tie-ins just aren’t this good. It’s a universal truth, man. Or, perhaps we’ve just been conditioned to accept this as a truth. So when something like these tales of the Dark Batmen hit the comic rack, we just don’t know what the fuck to do with ourselves. Well, I’ll tell you what to do in this instance. Pick em up. Read em. That’s all you have to do. This one in particular is about some Batman-Wonder Woman hybrid or something. But seriously, just pick up this one or any of the other ones that’ve already come out ‘cause they’ve all been great. That said, The Merciless is by the mighty Peter Tomasi and the legendary Francis Manapul, so it’ll be like, extra great. (Kris Johnson)
CELEBRATING SNOOPY HC $75.00 (AMP KIDS) – When it comes to the greatest comic strip on the planet, there are no better than Peanuts. That makes Snoopy the greatest comic strip dog by default. Here at Geek Hard, we’re all about celebrating Snoopy. Looks like AMP KIDS is all about that, too! You should celebrate this bad-ass beagle as well. Pick up this collection and find out for yourself how happiness is a warm puppy. (Andrew)
REDNECK TP VOL 01 DEEP IN THE HEART $16.99 (Image) – I’ve been talking about how awesome Donny Cates and Lisandro Estherren’s redneck vampire comic is more of less from day one. But I’d be willing to bet there’s like 1 or 2 of you that haven’t heeded my recommendations thus far. Yeah, I see you. Good thing the folks at Image are here to assist you by hot-shotting this debut collection onto the shelves of your LCS just in time for Halloween then, eh? Buy it. No, I don’t want to hear your excuses. Just Buy It. (Kris Johnson)
WONDER WOMAN #33 $2.99 (DC Comics) – It’s a brand new story arc with Times Past. Grail, the daughter of Darkseid, is on a quest to restore her father’s power. In order to do that, she’s gotta face off against the children of other gods. Things always tend to get fucked when gods fight. That’s an ancient proverb, isn’t it? (Andrew)
DARK ARK #2 $3.99 (Aftershock) – Shrae the Sorcerer learned last issue that the deal he made with his dark masters to safeguard all of the unnatural creatures of the world from God’s floodwaters in his own twisted version of Noah’s Ark may not have been all it’s cracked up to be. Imagine that. If you can’t trust shadowy demonic forces, who can you trust, amirite? Anywho, it turns out Shrae’s bosses have charged him with not only protecting his flock from harm but also preventing them from feasting on Noah’s bounty. If he fails at either task, he will suffer a horrible death and eternal damnation. Hey man, bloodthirsty monsters aren’t exactly know of their restraint. Tough hand to play there, Shrae. Condolences, my man. (Kris Johnson)
JUGHEAD: THE HUNGER #1 $3.99 (Archie) – Reggie’s dead, baby. Reggie’s dead. And Jughead’s werewolf ways are to blame. Now Juggy’s on the run from Betty Cooper, Werewolf Hunter. The oneshot that came out last winter was awesome. Now we get to feast on an entire series? This sounds like the perfect Halloween treat we’ve all been waiting for. Just don’t read it when the moon is full. You never know what might happen. Things are crazy right now so anything’s possible. (Andrew)
