Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.

DARK NIGHTS METAL #4 (OF 6) $3.99 (DC Comics) – Things are pretty dire for the DCU. Batman and Superman are off the board, the Justice League is in disarray, and Wonder Woman is struggling to organize a counter-offensive with the meager forces left at her disposal. Oh, and nightmare versions of every DC hero have begun to invade the multiverse. Stuff is going so well for everyone! (Kris Johnson)

MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – Chip Zdarsky and Jim Cheung make with some Fantastic Four Action! Wait, there’s only two of them now. Terrific Two? Anyways, The Thing needs to help the Human Torch get back in the groove. Meanwhile, Big, Bad Doom’s got a secret. Okay, so he’s not really “Big” and “Bad” anymore. He’s still got a secret, though. He’s had it since Secret War. Wonder what it could be? We’ll find out this Wednesday! That’s great because I’m tired of wondering. (Andrew)

DARK ARK #4 $3.99 (Aftershock) – Nix has ordered his vampire legions up from the depths of the deluge and the battle for control of the Dark Ark has begun. Yep, the shit has officially hit the fan, people. Just how shitty is that shit? Well, the sorcerer Shrae ended last issue with some vampire fangs crammed in his neck, so I’d say pretty shitty. Are the humans on board the ark done for? Or does the chosen harbinger of the dark gods have something left up his sleeve? (Kris Johnson)

JIM HENSON’S THE STORYTELLER: FAIRIES #1 (OF 4) $3.99 (Boom!) – The first issue of four devoted to telling mythic tales of fairies. The Elf Queen and the Sheppard is in fine form and stays true to the excellent tales that The Storyteller is known for. The work of Matt Smith, both on story and art, has the charm and wonder necessary for a ripping Storyteller yarn. It’s a great read for the Yuletide season. To say anything else would be to give too much away. Just trust me on this if you like ripping yarns. (Andrew)

DOCTOR STRANGE #383 $3.99 (Marvel) – Loki is inching ever closer to the nuclear bomb of the magic world. The secret spell lies within Zelma Stanton and all the trickster has to do to get what he wants is keep walking around the Sanctum shirtless and applying that pale, slightly-moist looking charm that some women find attractive. You know who you are. Meanwhile, having gotten his ass kicked last issue in a head-on confrontation, Doc Strange heads to Asgard looking for assistance. If you’re reading Thor right now, you know those suckers have their hands full. But I’m sure someone’s probably kicking around that can help out. Like Fandral. Or one of those gods that never seems to have anything to do. Or like a gnome or something. Gnomes can be helpful. They’re tiny and can get into crevices. And they bake great cookies. Or is that elves? That’s totally elves. (Kris Johnson)

HAWKEYE KATE BISHOP TP VOL 02 MASKS $17.99 (Marvel) – If you listen to my comic book podcast, Back Issue Bloodbath, you already know of my love for this series. This particular story arc has the return of Kate’s arch enemy: Madame Masque. The plot of Matt Fraction’s Kate stories continue here and Kelly Thompson and Leonardo Romero take things up a notch with this epic showdown. Find out why my co-host Sammy Younan is dead wrong about this series when you read this book. (Andrew)

QUANTUM & WOODY #1 $3.99 (Valiant) – Quantum and Woody are always a good time. The fine folks at Valiant have taken a long, hard look at the current state of the world and have concluded that we are in need of a good time. So yeah, Quantum, Woody, the Goat that’s way, way more than he appears; they’re all here to klang some bracelets and bust some heads. Pick this up on Wednesday and have some chuckles along with your action, whydontcha? (Kris Johnson)

HELLBOY KRAMPUSNACHT #1 $3.99 (Dark Horse) – It’s Hellboy vs. the satanic version of Santa. Mike Mignola and Adam Hughes bring you the tale. ‘Nuff Said. (Andrew)

MIGHTY THOR #702 $3.99 (Marvel) – The DEATH OF THOR storyline rolls on. So does the mighty MANGOG’s path of destruction! Last issue featured one of the most absolutely vicious and profoundly graphic beatdowns I’ve ever seen an Asgardian withstand. Considering the being on the receiving end of said beating was the Ultimate Mjolnir empowered War Thor, you damn well know that’s saying something. Yes, Volstagg was smashed within an inch of his life and his hammer was straight up fucking destroyed by the monstrous Mangog in the previous installment. Things are not looking good for anyone who deigns to call themselves a god. Is there any being that could possibly hope to face the creature and survive? I’m telling you, the title of this tale is seeming less like a swerve and more like a guarantee with each passing issue. (Kris Johnson)

HILLBILLY TP VOL 02 $17.99 (Albatross) – Ever wonder what Conan would be like if instead of being an ancient warrior, he was a big man that walked the Appalachian Highlands? You don’t need to wonder ’cause Eric Powell did all the wondering for you and came up with an answer: The Hillbilly. Amazing tales of action, intrigue and amazement. Each issue is an adventure. If you’re looking for something with a folksy feel that also hints at epic fantasy, this is the book for you. Check out the latest volume and be ready for a fun ride. (Andrew)
