Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
BLACK PANTHER ANNUAL #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – Did you see Black Panther at the ol’ moving picture show this weekend? Of course you did. Did you love Black Panther? Of course you did. What if I told you that some of the most important components of the film — The Dora Milaje, Zuri, Everett K Ross, the Hatut Zeraze, the White Wolf, panther god Bast — were introduced in the comics by one man? And what if I told you that that one man is returning to the character he had such a great influence with a brand new story? I bet you’d buy the shit out of whatever book that story showed up in, wouldn’t you? Well, you’re in luck, because that man — Christopher Priest — exists and the comic he’ll be making his return in is this one right here: The Black Panther Annual! Fancy that! Do I really need to tell you to pick this sucker up? Yeah, didn’t think so. (Kris Johnson)
HIT-GIRL #1 $3.99 (Image) – Hit-Girl’s back and she’s going on tour. It’s world tour of vigilante justice and it’s gonna get bloody to be sure. Mark Millar is writing the first story with a slew of talented writers waiting in the wings for future arcs. The best character from Kick-Ass is the star of her first ongoing. I think that’s something to celebrate! Pick up this issue and see how Mindy brings a Colombian hitman to his knees. Fun for the who bloody family! (Andrew)
MIGHTY THOR #704 $3.99 (Marvel) – It’s The Mangog vs. Odin and The Odinson as Asgard crumbles around them! But where is Thor?! Jane Foster has had a hard truth revealed to her: If she becomes the Goddess of Thunder again, she will condemn herself to certain death at the hands of the aggressive cancer ravaging her mortal form. Thus far, she’s been able to resist the urge to hold Mjolnir once more and join the fray due to the assurances of The Odinson that he will vanquish the beast assaulting Asgard. But what choice will she possibly have once it becomes clear that this is not the same Mangog Thor Classic has defeated in the past? That the only thing that could possibly stop the monstrosity in a 80 pound woman on her death bed? Sadly, no choice at all. (Kris Johnson)
MONSTRESS #14 $3.99 (Image) – With great power comes great responsibility. So when you’re careless with that power, you can really fuck shit up for other people. Maika learns that the hard way as her actions endanger an entire city. A whole freakin’ city! That right there is power. If I’m careless at my work, I might screw up a report or two. This woman and her kaiju cause shit for a city. Really gives you some perspective, don’t it? (Andrew)
DOCTOR STRANGE: DAMNATION #1 (OF 4) $4.99 (Marvel) – Holy shit! Donny Cates absolutely knocked it out of the park with his first arc on the ongoing Doctor Strange title. Now he’s bringing his considerable talents to bear on this fancy new Doc Strange mini-event. I know we’re all more than a little sick of events, but Donny Cates has not let me down yet. As I said, this is a mini-event, so if you just want to read the main title we’re talking about right here, that’s A-Ok. This book has got everything you need? “Everything, you say?”. Everything, goddammit! We’ve got Ghost Rider, Blade, Moon Knight, Iron Fist, Bloodstone, Wong, Brother Voodoo, Man-Thing and Scarlet Spider (wait? What?!) all teaming up to prevent Mephisto from dragging Las Vegas into hell real permanent like. It should be a ton of fun and full of big, bonkers ideas. If you dig the supernatural and things that are supposed to instill you with a little wonder and awe, I suggest you pick this comic up come Wednesday. (Kris Johnson)
WWE #14 $3.99 (Boom) – The Women’s Evolution is going strong right now in the WWE. This here comic focuses on the start of that evolution with the “top secret” story of how Charlotte, Sasha Banks, Becky Lynch and Bayley made their way to the WWE roster. That’s cool and all, but what I’m excited about is the back up story. Tini Howard brings us the Part 1 of her four-part story on Asuka, the best female wrestler today! NOBODY IS READY FOR ASUKA…..but we’re sure as hell ready for this story. (Andrew)
PUNISHER: THE PLATOON #6 (OF 6) $3.99 (Marvel) – The final issue of Garth Ennis and Goran Parlov’s exploration of Frank Castle’s first command is at hand. Castle and Ly Quang are finally face to face in a confrontation that can only end with one of their deaths… or will it? We know that Castle will continue on in his further adventures as the Punisher. Surely Ly Quang, as skilled and formidable as she is, will achieve some sort of win even in the face of her seemingly inevitable demise. So join me this Wednesday in the last Huey back to the shit and see first hand just how many pieces of himself Frank Castle is willing to leave behind to achieve victory. (Kris Johnson)
DEFENDERS #10 $3.99 (Marvel) – The Defenders is coming to a close. What a run! This series only went ten issues but it wasn’t for lack of story. (It was ’cause their writer crossed the street to play in another sandbox of characters….but that’s a story for another day.) This is the issue where it all comes to an End. The team took down Diamondback last issue. Now Gary….I mean Daredevil must face off against The Hood for all the marbles. And when I say marbles, I don’t actually mean marbles. I’m talking about New York City. (Matt Murdock is Daredevil. Not Gary. Must remember this for next time.) (Andrew)
INFINITY COUNTDOWN PRIME #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – Just what in the blue hell happened to the Infinity Stones after the Gauntlet was destroyed during the climax of Secret War and the universe itself was reset? Find our right here as Gerry Duggan and Mike Deodato give you all the answers leading up to this Summer’s big Marvel Infinity Gauntlet event. Another event? DAMMIT! (Kris Johnson)
ROBIN: YEAR ONE DELUXE EDITION HC $34.99 (DC Comics) – Hey kids! Remember Dark Victory? That cool retelling of when Robin first joined Batman in his war on crime? There was a cool story by Chuck Dixon, Scott Beatty and some very talented artists that came out shortly after it that continued the story. Robin: Year One is one of those unsung comics that’s totally awesome but no one ever talks about it. Well I’m talking about it, dammit! There’s a brand spankin’ new hardcover edition of the comic that you should totally get for your personal collection. Get it? Got it. Good. (Andrew)
