This weekend, the Metro Toronto Convention Centre will be alive with the sound of fandom. The Toronto Comicon is here once again to entertain the pop culture-fueled populous. Many will come to buy merch. Others will come to get an autograph from one of the of the many celebrity guests or comic creators on hand. And some will attend to show off their latest cosplay. But whatever the reason you’re coming for, there’s a variety of stuff to check out. Here’s my list of the MUST SEE panels and events to see at Toronto Comicon 2018!
IMPROV FROM THE DANDIES
FRIDAY 6PM – HIGH STAKES IMPROV – RM 801
SATURDAY 6PM – HOLODECK FOLLIES – RM 801
SUNDAY 12PM – HOGWARTS SCHOOL TOUR – RM 801
The Dandies are a hilarious improv troupe that performs monthly at Comedy Bar in Toronto. Their humour is only outshone by their energy and enthusiasm for various fandoms. You have 3 opportunities to catch this group creating fully realized stories before your very eyes. They’ll be doing Buffy The Vampire Slayer themed improv on Friday night, Star Trek themed improv on Saturday night, and Harry Potter themed improv on Sunday at noon. Whatever fandom floats your boat, there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy their take on these series.
CANADIAN ICON MEGAN FOLLOWS
SATURDAY 2PM – CELEBRITY Q&A SESSION WITH THE ACCLAIMED ACTRESS – RM 801
For the past 40 years, Megan Follows has been in film, television and on stage. She’s best known for her performance as the title character in Anne of Green Gables and it’s follow up, Anne of Avonlea. More recently, she’s been keeping busy with multiple television appearances, most notably as Queen Catherine de’ Medici on the series Reign. Fans can see her next on the upcoming season of Wynonna Earp. Megan is not known for doing conventions, so this is definitely a panel worth checking out.
LEGENDARY COMIC BOOK CREATORS
SATURDAY 5PM – COMIC LEGENDS: DAVE DORMAN, HOWARD MACKIE & JOHN McCREA – RM 803
One of the best things about the Toronto Comicon is the variety of comic creators at the show. This panel showcases some of the more well established creators out there. Each of these men have been working in the comic industry for decades now. One has gotten to draw some of your favourite fandoms, old and new. Another got to write Spider-Man for almost the entirety of the 90s. The third has been a long time collaborator with Garth Ennis. Between the 3 of them, there’s a bunch of stories to be told. This panel is also moderated by former Geek Hard writer Brent Chittenden, so if comics aren’t enough of a reason, there’s that as well.
THE CYBERTRONIC SPREE
SATURDAY 8PM THE SPREE w/ WORDBURGLAR & CONTRA-BAND – THE REC ROOM
After a fun day on the con floor, it’s fun to unwind with some great music. You don’t have to go far to get what you’re looking for. On Saturday night, one of the greatest bands in the galaxy is performing right across the street from the Convention Centre. Making a return appearance to The Rec Room (255 BREMEN BLVD), The Cybertronic Spree will be doing a special St. Patrick’s Day performance. Wordburglar and Contra-band join them for a night of nerd rocking! If you’ve never seen The Spree perform live, you don’t want to miss this. They’re more than meets the eye….and ears. Get tickets for this event HERE.
WRITING FOR COMICS
SUNDAY 1PM WRITING FOR COMICS PANEL w/ HOWARD CHAYKIN, HOWARD MACKIE, TY TEMPLETON, CONOR McCREERY – RM 802
If the Legends panel wasn’t enough comics for you, we’ve got more great creators sharing knowledge on Sunday. Writing for sequential art is a very unique experience. Listen to this group of creators from various eras discuss the finer points of writing graphic fiction. Moderated by Mark Askwith, one of the producers of Prisoners of Gravity, this panel will take a deep dive into the world of comic writing. All you aspiring comic scribes will want to take a seat under this learning tree.
So there you go. These are my picks for the panels and events to see at Toronto Comicon 2018. If you go to any of these, you might just see me there as well. Hope to run into you at the con.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
