Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.
We’re back to our traditional format on an all new Back Issue Bloodbath. This one is a doozy. Writer VS. Artist!
It’s been a debate as old as the comics industry itself: Which is more important? The Writer or the Artist? Make no mistake, a comic book series needs both good writing and artwork to make it. But which of the two components are more important? Over the years, we’ve seen the writer take more prominence as the “superstar” of the medium. We’ve also had our share of artists driving the industry to greater heights. It’s a visual medium but it also needs a strong story structure to be compelling. So which side of this collaboration has a greater responsibility?
Take a listen to this week’s episode to hear Andrew and Sammy debate this difficult question. Do the boys have the answer? It’s hard to tell. Be sure to listen as they look back on the Image Exodus, the rise of the cartoonist, and the current batch of highly talented scribes and illustrators working in the comics industry today. It’s food for thought and all in good fun. Maybe you have your own opinion on this topic. Who knows? We might sway you in the other direction or affirm your beliefs on the matter. Take a listen and find out who “wins” in the battle of Writer VS. Artist!
