Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
IRON FIST #79 $3.99 (Marvel) – Orson Randall has returned from the dead and he’s fighting for his very soul inside Mephisto’s Octogon of the damned. Sounds like a pretty bad ass set up for the triumphant resurrection of a fan favourite character… That is, if Hell’s prince of lies hadn’t placed a potentially insurmountable obstacle in the former Iron Fist’s path… Danny Rand himself! (Kris Johnson)
SHADE THE CHANGING WOMAN #2 (OF 6) $3.99 (DC Comics) – It’s hard to make a new life when others move on. This is especially true when you’ve got a new body and no real history in said body. Shade is going through a lot of changes these days. Thankfully, fans of the Shade the Changing Girl will be happy with the story of this new series as it’s brought to you by Cecil Castellucci and Marley Zarcone. The more things change the more they stay the same….or in Shade case, change the same. (Andrew)
MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE #5 $3.99 (Marvel) – Johnny and Ben have found themselves stuck on an Earth in a fast collapsing universe. All that remains of existence is the Sun, moon, and terra firma, pressing against the crushing, black walls of impending oblivion. Can what’s left of the Fantastic Four hope to halt the source of the destruction that is the Devourer of Worlds… Galacti-Doom? Doctor Galactus? Doom-lactus? I give up. It’s a fused Doctor Doom-Galactus, okay? It’s nuts. NUTS! (Kris Johnson)
GI JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO ANNIVERSARY EDITION #1 $3.99 (IDW) – As the Real American Hero Series approaches its 250th issue, it’s always good to look back on where it all began. Larry Hama and Herb Trimpe took a toy line and turned it into an ongoing battle against Cobra, the Enemy, and nothing was ever the same again. Taste it again for the first time….and that’s and order! YO JOE! (Andrew)
BATMAN #44 $2.99 (DC Comics) – Batman and Catwoman gon’ get married. Somebody gon’ fuck it up. (Kris Johnson)
AVENGERS: SHARDS OF INFINITY #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – I’m gonna be honest with you, I really don’t give a shit about the Infinity Stones. That being said, you give me a book with an Avengers team made up of Captain America, The Falcon, The Black Panther and The Black Widow and you have my full attention. Throw in some new villains and set it on the moon and you really have my attention. Collecting shards of a cosmic cube has never been so exciting! (Andrew)
ANALOG #1 $3.99 (Image) – Five years from now, trust in the internet has been eroded to such a degree that secrets are no longer stored there. Any data worth a damn is kept in an analog format and transported by info couriers known as Ledger Men like professional scumbag Jack McGinnis. Gerry Duggan and David O’Sullivan team up for this new series that will follow McGinnis as he attempts to stay alive long enough to offload the most dangerous cargo in the world… truth. (Kris Johnson)
ISOLA #1 $3.99 (Image) – Brenden Fletcher and Karl Kerschl bring us a fantasy adventure involving a queen, a soldier, an evil spell and a land of the dead. These are all the winning ingredients needed to for an exciting, action packed comic that’s fun for the whole family. Looking forward to see what wonders await between the covers of this one. (Andrew)
DREDD: FURIES ONE SHOT $3.99 (2000AD) – Did you love the crap out of Karl Urban’s Dredd flick? Of course you did, because you like awesome things. We may never get a silver screen sequel to that bit of cinematic euphoria, but through the wonder that is comic books, the universe will continue! Dredd: Furies picks up some time after the events of the film. Ma-Ma’s right hand computer coding man, The Techie, has left crime behind to make a life for himself on the straight and narrow with a new lady and a young son. Of course, the reality of Mega-City One is a harsh one and soon the path of crime comes calling once again… and that path leads in only one direction: Judge fucking Dredd. (Kris Johnson)
TINSELTOWN #1 (OF 5) $1.50 (Alterna) – It’s 1915 and young Abigail Moore has just become one of the first female police officers in Hollywood. But beneath the surface of this glamorous town beats a rotten, corrupt heart that brings out the worst in men. Abigail’s about to head straight into a world of lies, greed and cheating….and that’s just from the “good” ones. All I know is that Alterna has been making some great comics at bargain prices and their new books are always worth a look…..and lies, greed and cheating usually make for a good read. (Andrew)
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness.
