Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.

CODA #1 (OF 12) $3.99 (Boom) – What happens to a once magical realm when all magic is sapped from it? According to Coda, the result is a wild-ass combination of Lord of the Rings and Mad Max. Our guides in this apocalyptic reality are a man named Hum and a pissed off mutant unicorn as they attempt to survive and make sense of their brutal new existence. Sounds like Simon Spurrier and Matias Bergara have cooked up a real barrel of laughs! (Kris)

AVENGERS #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – The Avengers are back! Jason Aaron and Ed McGuinness are at the helm for this latest version of Earth’s Mightiest heroes. They got an old school feel as the original Cap, Thor and Iron Man are back on the team just in time to face off against a freakin’ Celestial. But not everything old is new again as some things that are newish are new again too? Did I loose anyone with that last sentence? This team has a Ghostrider! pretty cool, right? Also, as it Jason Aaron writing it, there’s some connection between the Celestial attacking and some of Odin’s cronies from way back when. Check out the latest assembly of the Avengers All Stars! (Andrew)

DARK ARK #6 $3.99 (Aftershock) – After a short hiatus, Cullen Bunn and Juan Doe’s Dark Ark has returned! Noah’s Ark and all of its inhabitants are in distress and it falls to Shrae and his horrors of the night to save them. Why? Why would a bunch of goddamn monsters want to save God’s chosen creatures? Well for one thing, they’re gonna need food of the meaty variety when the Deluge finally subsides. For another, Noah’s survival was one of the conditions the fallen gods gave the sorcerer Shrae when they handed him his marching orders. Penalty for failure? Absolute annihilation. So yeah, Shrae’s in a great spot. (Kris)

GRAVEDIGGERS UNION #6 $3.99 (Image) – This series is one crazy time. Mixing sci-fi, magic and horror, this series doesn’t give you a chance to catch your breath. Case in point, this issue starts a new story arc where a Space Monkey is the key to the starting an apocalypse. Killing it brings forth the Dark Gods who bring about the end of mankind. So the Gravediggers are going to try and stop that from happening, obviously. Anybody that want’s to save a Space Monkey is alright in my book. (Andrew)

CAPTAIN AMERICA #701 $3.99 (Marvel) – In 2314, the legacy of Captain America lives on in a utopian USA held aloft by the ideals and teaching of the late Steve Rogers. But as with all things, the brightest lights create the deepest shadows… Shadows in which the most sinister plots can fester and and grow. Luckily, in this future, Cap’s son and grandson carry his shield forward. Let’s see if they can fair as well as their patriarch against the forces of evil. This is also Mark Waid’s first issue of Cap without Chris Samnee. Let’s see how that all goes. Let’s see, dammit. (Kris)

HILLBILLY #9 $3.99 (Albatross Funnybooks) – This mythical series about a mountain man “Conan-type” going on a great adventures has truly captured my imagination. Eric Powell brings us yet another ripping yarn and this time sheds some light on Rondel’s bigger story. (Andrew)

REBORN TP $16.99 (Image) – What happens when we die? It’s a question that has plagued mankind since we pulled ourselves out of the muck and started to think our own thinky-thoughts. There’s been many ideas put forward, many religions sprung from those ideas, many wars fought. Now Mark Millar and Greg Capullo have an idea of their own. What if when we die, we don’t go to heaven or hell? What if we go to some other place? Some other place where everyone we knew in life, both loved and unloved, were waiting for us. Some other place where we have to literally fight to be with those we hold dear? Sounds pretty damn unpleasant to me. But I’m sure it makes for one helluva comic book! (Kris)

MANFRIED THE MAN GN $14.99 (Quirk Books) – Imagine a world where Cats lived lived like men and men lived like cats. That’s all you need to do to be prepared for this lovable graphic novel that is equal parts funny and heartfelt. Anyone who’s ever had a pet (be they a cat or a human) will connect with this story. Creators Caitlin Major and Kelly Bastow will be on our show next week to tell you more about it. But pick it up this week and enjoy your life. (Andrew)

DC NATION #0 $0.25 (DC Comics) – For only a quarter, the fine folks at DC Comics are inviting readers to enjoy a glimpse of the immediate future of the DCU. First, the Joker learns of Catwoman’s upcoming Bat-themed nuptials and is none too impressed. Next, the aftermath of Dark Nights Metal and the breadth to which it has altered the multiverse is examined in this prelude to Justice League: No Justice. And finally, Bendis’ Superman is unleashed in this Man of Steel prologue! That’s a lot of story for 25¢. Hell, that’s a lot of anything for 25¢. (Kris)

DEATH OR GLORY #1 $4.99 (Image) – Rick Remender makes awesome comic books. It’s kinda his thing. How do you make a Remender comic even better? Pair him with legendary French superstar Bengal on a book that takes place on the American open road, that’s how. Raised off the grid by truckers, Glory knows a thing or two about driving. Now that her’s father is dying and needs money for surgery, she’s gotta put her skills to use pulling off FOUR cross-country heists to pay for it. Oh, and she’s only got three days to do it. AND there’s also mob killers, crooked cops and a psycho ex-husband trying to stop yer. Piece of cake, right? This sounds like a 70s action film. I’m in! (Andrew)

So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness.
