Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. This week, I present them to you without a co-writer as Kris Johnson is recovering from that “relaxing cruise” he went on. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
X-MEN WEDDING SPECIAL #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – This mutant super team sure loves to throw some memorable nuptials. The wedding of Kitty Pryde and Colossus will probably be no different. But there’s gotta be some bachelor and bachelorette party action, amirite? Let’s see what happens when mutants get blitz! Oh, and there’s also a lovey-dovey story about Peter and Kitty written by Chris Claremont. That’ll probably be worth reading as well.
SUPERMAN SPECIAL #1 $4.99 (DC Comics) – Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleeson have done some amazing things with the Man of Tomorrow and his family. One thing I personally found cool was the story they did about Dinosaur Island. It looks like that’s a personal favourite of theirs as well ’cause Supes is returning to to the island to save Captain Storm. What will Storm think of the world of today now that he’s free of that god forsaken place? I’m itching the find out!
BARRIER #3 (OF 5) $3.99 (Image) – Part 3 of this 5-part, weekly series takes us to a quiet place. It’s a “silent” issue. That means no speech bubbles or caption (in any language) for the duration of the issue. Brian K. Vaughan and Marcos Martin have shown next level storytelling thus far with this series. I’m sure this new wrinkle will be done just as well.
THE ARTIST BEHIND SUPERMAN: THE JOE SHUSTER STORY GN $19.99 (Super Genius) – Everybody knows who Superman is! I just talked about him a couple of paragraphs earlier. The character is the reason that comic books are around today! But what do you know about the artist that co-created the character? The comic industry was forever changed when two kids in Cleveland became friends and created the most recognizable pop culture character ever! Based on archival material and original sources, this graphic novel gives you the story about how Supes came to be. Pick it up if you want to learn a thing or two about comics history, kid.
NEW CHALLENGERS #1 (OF 6) $2.99 (DC Comics) – This ain’t your daddy’s Challengers. Challengers’ Mountain has returned and picked 4 new explorers. I guess that means they’ll be “challenging” the unknown and whatnot. Good for them. They got six issues to wow me. Good luck, kids. You’re gonna need it.
THE HUNT FOR WOLVERINE: CLAWS OF KILLER #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – If you found out that your arch enemy, who you thought was dead, might be alive again, what would you do? Maybe get together with a couple of folks that also hate this guy’s guts and go out on a hunt? That’s what Sabretooth, Lady Deathstrike and Daken (Wolverine’s emo son) do as they want to make sure that Logan is still good and dead. But things go awry as per usual. They uncover something far worse than Wolvie coming back from the dead. This is why we can’t have nice things, guys.
FLAVOR #1 $3.99 (Image) – In a world where chefs are heroes and food is a top commodity, an epic food adventure awaits a young cook who discovers a mystery that could unravel society. It’s a new series that not only gives some food for thought, it also provides bonus content from renowned food scientist ALI BOUZARI. So chew on that!
A WALK THROUGH HELL #1 $3.99 (Aftershock) – Here it is, the obligatory offering from Aftershock and Garth Ennis. Even while Kris is away, his heart would break if there was no mention of Aftershock. So here ya go. Two FBI agents walk into a warehouse and a world of horrors that they may never escape. Sounds like a Garth Ennis Aftershock story. Quota has been met.
TRUE BELIEVERS: WOLVERINE DYING GAME #1 $1.00 (Marvel) – Hey kids, remember the 90s! Sure, we all do. Do you guys remember Age of Apocalypse? Well, just before that happened, Wolverine was asked to check in on Sabretooth (who was living in the mansion) while the X-Men tried to stop the end of the world or something. Anyways, Wolvie agreed and spent a day just getting annoyed by Victor Creed all the while trying not to kill him. If you were Logan, would be able to last a whole issue without killing this bastard? Pick up this classic story to see of he did.
ROT #1 (OF 3) $3.99 (Source Point Press) – A contract killer dying of terminal cancer gets experimented on in prison and becomes an undead killing machine that steals life force from its victims. That’s the beginning of the story. Where do you go from there? My guess is a lot of dead bodies. A LOT of dead bodies. Source Point Press has got some interesting horror and genre tales coming out and this story seems right up their alley. If you’re looking for a “happy” ending, better steer clear. But if your looking for lots of dead bodies, you’ve come to the right place. Cheers.
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
