Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. This week, Kris Johnson returns to lend a helping hand. Yay! Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
HER INFERNAL DESCENT #2 $3.99 (Aftershock) – Hey gang! Wanna read a really weird comic this week? You do? Well, you’re in luck. Her Infernal Descent #2 (from the fine folks at Aftershock) hits store shelves on Wednesday and it checks all the bizarro boxes. Living people in hell, Franz Kafka, William Blake, Cerberus, demons with butts for faces, demons with no faces, tortured souls bleeding from their butts due to being repeatedly pierced with demonic butt needles, sentient butts. It’s all here. And you’ll also witness one middle-aged woman’s harrowing journey through the Inferno as she attempts to save her family’s souls. Y’know, just in case the butt stuff didn’t hook you. (Kris)
BLACK PANTHER #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – Protecting Wakanda just got a whole lot harder. Thanks to this thing called the Multiverse, Wakanda stretches farther than T’Challa ever dreamed. So now he’s gotta protect an intergalactic kingdom. No big deal, right? That last comment was sarcasm. Of course it’s a big deal. Ta-Nehisi Coates welcomes superstar artist Daniel Acuna to the fold for this brand new adventure for the Black Panther that’s out of this World(s). (Andrew)
FLASH #47 $2.99 (DC Comics) – Silver Age vs. Modern Age! Mentor vs. Sidekick! Barry Allen vs. Wally West! Flash vs. Flash! It’s the biggest Flash story line in years and you are not gonna want to miss it. So pull up a chair, put on your sunglasses and your lightning-proof undies, and get ready to see some serious shit. The Flash War has begun! (Kris)
MIKE ALLRED ARTIST SELECT HC $125.00 (IDW) – I’m not one to drop a $125 item on this list, but DAMN, son! This Artist Select Edition showcasing the work of Mike Allred is deserving of your attention and my love. Madman is an awesome character and Allred has hand picked 500 pages from his favourite issues to include in this collection! That’s pretty frickin’ cool! Even if you don’t know anything about Madman, just take a look at the amazing artwork of Mike Allred and you’ll be hooked. DAMN! (Andrew)
INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #600 $5.99 (Marvel) – It’s the end of an era! Brian Michael Bendis’ time at Marvel officially comes to a close with the publication of Iron Man #600 and hot damn, is he bringing the thunder! In this milestone issue, Bendis will be joined by a murderer’s row of pencil-wielding greats (Jim Cheung, David Marquez, Mike Deodato Jr., Mark Bagley, Leinil Francis Yu, and Daniel Acuña) to reveal the future paths of the Victor Von Doom, Riri Williams, and the recently de-coma’d Tony Stark! Marvel has promised that there will be five huge reveals found within these here pages. I’m sure that will be quite boss as well. Farewell Bendis, and thanks for all the fish. (Kris)
SUPER SONS #16 $3.99 (DC Comics) – Hey, so it’s the last Super Sons….until the new series drops this Fall. But this is the end of this series and we hate to see it go. It was pretty fun. Damian had a lot of “Faulty Towers” moments that I will never forget. But for now, lets see how the boys handle this whole Kid Amazo problem. (Andrew)
DOCTOR STRANGE #390 $3.99 (Marvel) – Series writer Donny Cates is joined by artist Frazer Irving for a post-Damnation table re-set. After the events in Las Vegas, Strange is in the process of putting his life back together. He’s reclaimed the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme, shut down his veterinary practice, and begun to repair his relationship with Zelma Stanton. So things are starting to look up for the Doc. If he could just get a moment or two to think, that would be just about perfect. Unfortunately for Strange, a Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man has decided to make a house call. Peace and quiet just ain’t gonna be in the cards. (Kris)
DEADLY CLASS #34 $3.99 (Image) – This book continues to live up to its name as Marcus and Viktor square off in Mexico and things get DEADLY! If you’ve never read the book but saw the teaser trailer SYFY dropped for the new television series, you at least know that this book pulls no punches. There will be many punches this issue. Many. Bloody. Punches. (Andrew)
REDNECK TP VOL 02 EYES UPON YOU $16.99 (Image) – Donny Cates and Lisandro Estherren’s southern-fried vampire epic continues in this second volume. Collecting issues 7-12 of the Bowman saga, this tome finds the once comfortable and prosperous vampire clan with their resources depleted and on the run from the law. As they attempt to figure out a new way forward, dissension from within and horrific secrets long thought buried threaten to completely destroy the already fractured family unit. (Kris)
SHIELD BY HICKMAN AND WEAVER #5 (OF 6) $3.99 (Marvel) – The long awaited (and we’re talking long) fifth issue of S.H.I.E.L.D. hits stores this week. This is one of the first signs of the apocalypse. For those that don’t know, this is a future battle between past historical figures who make up the hierarchy of S.H.I.E.L.D. Leonardo da Vinci leads one side and Issac Newton leads the other. This fight also includes Michelangelo, Howard Stark, Nathaniel Richards, Nostradamus, Nicola Tesla, and “The Star Child” (not Paul Stanley). If that sounds fucked up to you, that means you are sane. (Andrew)
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
