Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #800 $9.99 (Marvel) – An oversized anniversary spectacular! Dan Slott concludes his spider-epic, GO DOWN SWINGING, in spectacular fashion with the help of the mighty Stuart Immonen! This is it! It’s Spider-Man vs The Red Goblin for all the marbles and somebody is gonna get themselves dead. (Kris)
MAN OF STEEL #1 (OF 6) $3.99 (DC Comics) – The Bendis Era of Superman Stories officially begins with this new miniseries. Here’s hoping it’s better than that Man of Steel miniseries from the 80s. That did not stand the test of time…..even in its time. Sorry, John Byrne (not really). (Andrew)
LAST SIEGE #1 $3.99 (Image) – Spaghetti western meets Samurai flick meets hardcore medieval drama in this new Image Comic series from the team of Landry Q Walker and Justin Greenwood! An 11 year-old girl sits on the throne of a mighty kingdom and the hordes of soldiers currently besieging her castle are not happy about it. Will a mystery stranger from a faraway land be the one to turn the tide of war in her favour? Or will he simply succeed in slipping a blade between her ribs? (Kris)
KONG OF SKULL ISLAND 2018 SPECIAL #1 $7.99 (Boom) – It’s another Kong story and this one involves Vikings! Sold! This is a tale of an early Viking expedition that washes ashore on Skull Island. At first, they’re pretty jazzed that they’ve found a place lush with natural resources. That feeling doesn’t stick around for long when the creatures start showing up. Better hope Kong likes Vikings or this crew might be up shit creek without a paddle. (Andrew)
AQUAMAN JABBERJAW SPECIAL #1 $4.99 (DC Comics) – Y’know, I was just saying to Andrew the other day that sometimes in life you’ve just gotta take a flyer. Brothers and sisters, if the Aquaman Jabberjaw Special ain’t a flyer then I don’t know what is. Dan Abnett and Paul Pelletier join forces for what is quite possibly the weirdest DC/Hanna-Barbera crossover yet as the King Of Atlantis teams with the world’s most annoying shark to save the fine folks of Amnesty Island! Take a chance and pick this up on Wednesday, friends! (Kris)
KILL OR BE KILLED #19 $3.99 (Image) – This amazing series is wrapping up soon. You might as well jump on now to get at least a taste of the awesome before it goes away. And when I say awesome, I mean a crazed young man on a vigilante quest that started when he thought he was being haunted by a demon. He currently locked up tight in an insane asylum but I don’t think the story will end there. (Andrew)
BLACKWOOD #1 (OF 4) $3.99 (Dark Horse) – It’s mystical murder most foul in wizarding school! This week, Rvan Dorkin and Veronica Fish introduce us to the world of Blackwood College — a school like any other. That is, except for the whole teaching sorcery thing, ghosts all over the place, mummy-chimps, and all sorts of other f-d up supernaturalness. How can a guy be expected to learn with all that going on? It’d be so distracting you could almost kill somebody! Oh hey, I think I just figured out the mystery, guys. (Kris)
WE ARE DANGER #1 $3.99 (Black Mask) – Two high school girls meet and form a band. Next stop, a nationwide Battle of the Bands contest. If they win, it’s all aces from hear on in. But it’s never that easy. A bitter rival of one of the girls also has her sights set on the prize. Looking forward to some good ol’ fashioned high school music and mayhem. (Andrew)
DOOMSDAY CLOCK #5 (OF 12) $4.99 (DC Comics) – The Comedian is alive, the Mime and Marionette are on a rampage in Gotham’s underworld, and Rorschach is still stuck deep in the bowels of Arkham. Will Batman realize he can trust his new, blot-faced ally before the shit REALLY hits the fan? Probably not. But that’s what makes good comics, amirite? (Kris)
SUPERGIRL: BEING SUPER TP $16.99 (DC Comics) – The fourth DC title on the list! Cool. And so is this final pick. Superstar creators Mariko Tamaki and Joelle Jones bring us a Supergirl story that’s down to Earth. Down to Earth is not usually a term used when discussing a Kryptonian, but that’s what this story is. It’s a story about what it means to be a hero and the sacrifices that come with it. It’s also a pretty awesome looking book with art that will knock your socks off. (Disclaimer: The story does not have the power to literally knock your socks off your person. It’s just really good.) (Andrew)
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
