Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
THOR #1 $5.99 (Marvel) – The Odinson has reclaimed the mantle of Thor and is on the hunt for brand new hammer to wield! The comic book dream team of Jason Aaron and Mike Del Mundo come together for this inaugural issue that sees The God of Thunder’s quest bring him face to face with the unstoppable JUGGERNAUT! This should be a slobberknocker for the ages, folks! Be sure to check it out! (Kris)
HAWKMAN #1 $3.99 (DC Comics) – Hey look, it’s a new Hawkman series. We all know Hawkman and his many reincarnations. The dude’s come back time and time again. It’s about damn time he figured out why he’s come back so many damn times. There’s also an ancient prophesy to be deciphered and many skeletons from past lives to pull out of the closet and yada, yada, yada. It’s a full time job being this Hawkman guy. (Andrew)
STELLAR #1 $3.99 (Image) – Stellar is the tale of an intergalactic war goddess. Stolen away as a child and engineered to be the perfect weapon, she succeeded in bringing peace to the galaxy from the barrel of a blaster rifle. The war is over, but death still follows her. While she seeks redemption for the horrors she inflicted on the universe, the other Weapons that were loosed during the Conflict look to deny her serenity. (Kris)
NANCY DREW #1 $3.99 (Dynamite) – All I got to say is that Kelly Thompson is writing this book. I can’t wait to read her take on Nancy Drew. She’s gonna rock it. (Andrew)
BABYTEETH #11 $3.99 (Aftershock) – If comic books had seasons, right here would be the beginning of Babyteeth Season 2. Some absolutely bonkers shit went down during the course of the last issue and our heroes have been scattered to the wind. Baby Clark, his aunt Heather, and a demonic raccoon protector have been lost to the Red Realm with no hope of escape. Meanwhile, Clark’s Mama Sadie and her ex-military father are holed up in Palestine trying to figure out a way to bust an inter-dimensional crack into the Red and save the little guy from horrors beyond imagining. Problem is, time moves differently in the Red Realm. Will they even be able to recognize Clark if they’re able to find him? (Kris)
NEW MUTANTS DEAD SOULS #4 (OF 6) $3.99 (Marvel) – You should be reading this series. It’s a lot of fun. It’s also an interesting, X-Files-like take on the less popular X-characters. Plus, it’s drawn by Geek Hard’s comic creator guest of the year! Adam Gorham is one talented bastard. Yes, he most definitely is. And he’s pretty funny too. Don’t believe me? Check out our interview with him from Toronto ComiCon. And buy the damn comic so his kids can eat! (Andrew)
THE WEATHERMAN #1 $3.99 (Image) – The worst thing most weathermen and women have to worry about is people continually (and totally justifiably) shitting all over them for doing a bad job predicting the weather. Y’know, their one job. Well, Nathan Bright wishes he had it so good. Y’see, Nathan was the #1 weatherman on terraformed Mars and people thought he was a pretty alright dude. That is until the worst terrorist attack in the history of mankind wiped out almost everyone left back on Earth and Nathan caught the blame for it. Now everybody really hates the weatherman. So much so that every sentient creature in the galaxy is out for his head. Bummer. Even in the future it sucks to be a weatherman. (Kris)
PLASTIC MAN #1 (OF 6) $3.99 (DC Comics) – Gail Simone brings us a tale of highs and lows. Highs as in high octane fun! Lows as in finding yourself in the gutter and having to work your way out. And there’s a lot of work to be done to get out of said gutter. Work like getting revenge on your boss, saving a kid from the streets, impressing a stripper and saving the whole damn world! Only Gail could fit all that into one book. Check it out. (Andrew)
VENOM #2 $3.99 (Marvel) – Yes, I am recommending the second issue of a Venom comic. Yes, I’m as shocked as you are. But, like, should we really be? I mean, the creative team is Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman. These dudes were never going to let us down. This beast of a comic has everything going for it: beautiful art, snappy writing, continuity deep cuts, and big, crazy, canon-rewriting ideas. This book of massive, fun and absolutely the reason why I still dig superhero comics. Read it and have a blast on Wednesday. (Kris)
THE FIX #12 $3.99 (Image) – Listen, I know we don’t have the best credibility here. Kris just recommended a Venom comic for crissakes! But if there’s one thing we’ve been right about, it’s The Fix. The book has been fun since issue one! Through it’s many twists and turns, Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber have delivered a funny story about crooked cops that you can’t help but love. And this issue keeps up that tradition. Roy has a plan. Need I say more? Good. Let’s leave it at that. (Andrew)
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
