Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
OBLIVION SONG #5 $3.99 (Image) – Nathan has found his brother. Or, I should say, he’s found his brother’s people, and they are dubious of his ass, to say the least. Will Nathan be able to convince them of his familial connection to their leader before they kill him? Or worse yet, before one of the many massive, hungry, horrific beats of Oblivion eat them all? It’s a big issue this week, and things are fixing to change! (Kris)
SUPERMAN #1 $3.99 (DC Comics) – It’s a new Superman comic brought to you by Brian Michael Bendis and Ivan Reis. Do I need to write anything else here? I don’t think I do. So for the rest of this paragraph, I’m just going to list some of my favourite foods: steak, chicken wings, chilli, curry chicken roti, beef patties, apple pie, pork ribs, beef brisket, fried chicken. That should be enough. Like I said, I don’t need all this space to convince you to pick up this book. (Andrew)
COME AGAIN HC $24.99 (IDW) – The 1970s are coming to an end and the time of Free Love has long since passed. But no one thought to get the memo out to a bunch of old hippies making time at a commune out in the Ozarks. Which, y’know, in and of itself wouldn’t be so bad. Except for the fact that this particular stretch of Arkansas mountainside also houses something monstrous… and hungry. What’s an old hippie to do? Probably get high and bang it out, is my guess. (Kris)
MORTE ONE-SHOT $3.99 (Source Point Press) – I got the chance to check this out awhile back and let me tell you, it is a refreshing new take on post apocalyptic storytelling. It’s a tale about the last man on Earth, with nothing but corpses to keep him company. He passes the time in a way you would not expect. A powerful story that attempts to bring hope and closure to a genre that’s usually lacking in both. Pick up the book and check out my video interview with artist David Bishop. (Andrew)
RELAY #1 $3.99 (Aftershock) – In the future, humanity has colonized numerous planets through the power of The Galactic Relay: A vast monolithic structure that enables interstellar travel and promotes homogeneous thought and cultural conformity. In this reality, on one of these colonized worlds, Jad Carter works for the Relay to maintain the peace. But not every world that the Relay visits is keen on subjugation. Imagine that. (Kris)
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1 $5.99 (Marvel) – Here’s another one of those comics I don’t really have to sell you on, do I? Nick Spencer is writing Spider-Man. That’s a sentence that makes sense on every level. And with Ryan Ottley providing the visuals, you’ve got yourself a one way ticket to fun times! It’s a back to basic Spidey with new characters and stories coming your way. With this and Chip’s Spidey, it feels like were in the middle of a wall crawling Renaissance…..or is it a wall crawling age of enlightenment? Time for some friendly neighborhood banter! (Andrew)
SHE COULD FLY #1 $4.99 (Dark Horse) – What would you do if one day you looked up in the sky and saw a woman speeding through the air, flying 2000 ft up, going 120 mph, before finally, suddenly, exploding into a fiery, meaty mist? Can you have a fiery mist? Maybe not, but you can definitely have a meaty one. Mmmm. Meat mist. Anyway, she dead, and people want to know who she was, how she could fly, and why she died. People like 15-year-old Luna, a disturbed teenage girl who absolutely will not stop until she gets some answers. (Kris)
DOMINO #4 $3.99 (Marvel) – This Domino series is a lot of fun. It’s so much fun that Shang Chi wants to get in on the action…..and I do mean action. We’ve got an episode of Back Issue Bloodbath coming your way about the first three issues of this series tomorrow. So why not make it a Domino Day. Pick up the latest issue and listen to the new episode of Bloodbath. Sounds like a lucky time to me! (Andrew)
FARMHAND #1 $3.99 (Image) – Rob Guillery of CHEW fame returns with this brand new series from Image Comics in which a farmer by the name of Jedidiah Jenkins has figured out a way to grow plug-and-play human organs as easily as a goddamn cucumber. Now sure, that premise is weird. But it’s not enough for a whole series, is it? Of course not. Which is why the Jenkins family also harbours a dark secret that threatens to burn down everything Jedidiah has built. Everything, which again, is fields full of hands and feet and stuff. Just want to make sure you got that part. (Kris)
IT CAME OUT ON A WEDNESDAY #1 $1.99 (Alterna) – Aside from having a cool title and an equally cool cover, the first issue of this new anthology series looks to be a lot of fun. Each issue is double-sized and features interviews, ongoing stories, a comic contest, and previews of upcoming Alterna titles. And the $2 price tag means you get more bang for your buck! So if you’re looking a slew of fun stories buy cool creators all in one book, look no further than this comic….which comes out THIS Wednesday. (Andrew)
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
