So you’ve got your tickets for this week’s Fan Expo Canada and you’re ready for 4 glorious days of geekdom at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Great. Know what you’re gonna do when you get there? Well yeah, you’re gonna get some autographs from celebs, check out the Harry Potter Escape Room, and maybe even buy a bunch of stuff from the many vendors onsite. Then what? There’s a whole lot more convention for the taking if you plan ahead. There’s these things called panels where you can hear cool people talk about amazing stuff. There are also events that take place after the con floor closes to keep the geeky fun going. Know about any of those? Let us help you out with that.
GEEK HARD LIVE PODCAST RECORDING
8:00 pm in ROOM 717A
If you are attending the convention on the first night, there’s only panel that’s truly a must: Geek Hard’s Panel! We’re doing a live podcast recording with comic creators Matthew Rosenberg and Adam Gorham. This recording will play on realityradio101.com the following evening. But you want to be there LIVE and in person for this one! Check this link for more details.
TALK FROM SUPERHEROES LIVE PODCAST RECORDING
4:00 pm in ROOM 715B
The very next day, there’s more podcast goodness to be had. Talk From Superheroes, the popular genre film and television review podcast, will also be doing a live podcast recording at the show. Join hosts Andrew Ivemy and Diana McCallum as they take a look back on the much beloved sequel, Blade II. Joining them for this event will be special guests actor Jason Deline and writer Ian MacIntyre!
INDIE COMIC CREATORS ROUND TABLE
5:00 pm to 6:00 pm in ROOM 701A
Independent comics are where it’s at, kids. I know that Marvel and DC are cool. But what about all those creator-owned titles out there? Former Geek Hard writer Brent Chittenden hosts a panel with some pretty awesome indie creators, including Ray Fawkes, Jay Fosgitt, Terry Moore, Jenn St. Onge and former Geek Hard guest Conor McCreery, to take a look into the world outside of mainstream flights and tights.
DEATHSTAR FOLLIES STAR WARS LIVE IMPROV
6:00 pm in ROOM 714B
Toronto improv troupe The Dandies have become a fixture in Fan Expo programing. And with good reason. They bring you a new show EVERY TIME. Originally focusing only on Star Trek, the group has branched out to cover multiple fandoms. They will be appearing throughout the weekend but I wanted to highlight this one as I have not seen their take on Star Wars yet. I know they’re down with the Federation, but is the Force strong with them? We’ll find out.
AN EVENING WITH THE CAST OF BACK TO THE FUTURE
7:00 pm in ROOM 106
This is a special ticketed event at the convention but is worth the extra price tag. Michael J. Fox, Christoper Lloyd, Lea Thompson and Tom Wilson will all be together on stage for this special reunion. The Back to the Future film franchise is much beloved and this event is the main reason to go to Fan Expo this year for some fans. If you’ve ever quoted the line, “Roads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads.”, you won’t want to miss this one.
REMEMBERING COMICS LEGEND STEVE DITKO
11:00 am in ROOM 716B
Steve Ditko co-created Spider-Man. That would be enough to celebrate this man’s work. Add to the fact that he also was the creator of Doctor Strange, Hawk and Dove, The Creeper and Mr. A, and the man’s contribution to comics HAS to be celebrated. Ditko passed away on June 29th of this year. Join Mark Askwith, Blake Bell, Steve Manale and current Amazing Spider-Man scribe Nick Spencer as they look back on the life and work of Steve Ditko.
CANADIAN PREMIERE SCREENING: CITY SERIES MANIFEST
1:15 pm in ROOM 701A
If you caught Geek Hard last week, you know that we’re pumped for the Fall Television Season. One of the new shows coming your way, Manifest, will be having its Canadian premiere at Fan Expo! After a turbulent, but routine flight, the passengers and crew discover the world has aged five years, yet no time has passed for them, and soon a deeper mystery unfolds. I like mystery. How ’bout you? This sounds like a pilot worth checking out.
NERD NOISE NIGHT WITH ODONIS ODONIS, WORDBURGLAR, MORE OR LES AND MORE!
9:00 pm at the REC ROOM (across the street from the MTCC South Building)
Just across the street from the Metro Toronto Convention Centre South Building lies The Rec Room, an entertainment complex like no other. This is the place where you’ll be able to hear some fantastic geek music on Saturday night! The show is co-hosted by hip hop acts Wordburglar and More Or Les. They both got great rhymes so it should be a good time. Get your tix HERE!
SPACE PRESENTS KILLJOYS
11:00 am in ROOM 701A
One of the best sci-fi series on television today will be at Fan Expo this year. Join producers Michelle Lovretta and Adam Barken, along with cast members Thom Allison, Kelly McCormack, Sean Baek, Rob Stewart, Atticus Mitchell, Gavin Fox and Patrick Garrow as they chat about Season 4 of Killjoys. It’s gonna be a hells of a good time.
SPACE PRESENTS WYNONNA EARP
2:00 pm in ROOM 701A
Another great genre show with a hilarious cast! Melanie Scrofano, Dominique Provost-Chalkley, Tim Rozon and Varun Saranga will all be there to talk about the current season of gun-toting demon hunter adventures. Saddle up and ride into this panel…..or just walk in. That’s probably the better way.
MARJORIE LIU AND SANA TAKEDA AUTOGRAPH SIGNING
4:00 pm in SIGNING AREA #1
The Eisner Award winning team behind Monstress will be at Fan Expo for all four days. This will be your LAST chance to get an autograph from them. I would suggest seeing them sooner in the weekend. But if you can’t, this is your final opportunity to do so. They’re both amazing creators and pretty awesome people as well. And Marjorie is also a former Geek Hard comic creator guest of the year, so there’s that too!
So that’s the list. Hopefully we’ve filled up the final 10% of free time at Fan Expo Canada. You’re welcome. Be sure to go to ALL of these events….or at least a few. And if you see us at any of ’em, be sure to come up and say hi.
Fan Expo Canada runs from August 30th to September 2nd at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
