Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
X-MEN GRAND DESIGN SECOND GENESIS #2 (OF 2) $5.99 (Marvel) – Ed Piskor continues his epic retelling of the entire history of the X-Men! This issue, the Phoenix fallout will be explored, the Seige Perilous does some perilous-ass shit, and the Jim Lee era begins! Lots of good stuff here for fans of all things X and newcomers looking for an entry point alike. (Kris)
SCARLET #1 (of 5) $3.99 (Jinxworld) – Hey kids, remember that Scarlet series that Bendis and Maleev put out through ICON a handful of years back? Well, this series continues that adventure! But don’t worry if you haven’t read any previous issues. This #1 is “new reader friendly”. (At least that’s what it says in Previews.) So what’s it about? A woman whose life was ripped apart by crooked cops fights back and brings about the next American Revolution. And her mom said she wouldn’t amount anything. Shows how much she knows. Now here’s Kris recommending a Venom comic….again. (Andrew)
WEB OF VENOM: VE’NAM #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – Hey, uh, have you heard the new Venom series is great? Well, this here new spin-off book exists solely due to that greatness. I mean, when was the last time here was more than one Venom title published in a month, let alone three? Now I’m not saying over-saturation is a good thing, but this book existing sure is. Expanding on one of the key components from Donny Cates’s Venom run, this new one shot is sure to feature big revelations that’ll prove to be can’t miss for any fans of the main series. And really, if you’re not a fan of flagship Venom book at this point what am I even doing here? (Kris)
CATWOMAN / TWEETY & SYLVESTER SPECIAL #1 $4.99 (DC Comics) – Hey kids! It’s another one of those DC / Looney Toons mash-ups! Yay! They’re fun, they’re weird, they’re a bit creepy. This time around, Gail Simone shows what happens when Catwoman teams up with Sylvester. Tweety needs to even the odds and reaches out to a super hero for help. One thing leads to another and we got ourselves a war of cats and birds, right here in Gotham! Sounds purrrfect! (Andrew)
AVENGERS ARENA TP COMPLETE COLLECTION $39.99 (Marvel) – As a comic that featured bright and shiny teen heroes battling each other to the death on Aracade’s very murdery murder island, Avengers Arena got some people’s attention upon initial released. That said, it seemed to me that a lot of folks out there used the series’ obvious similarities to Battle Royale to dismiss it as a rip off that just wasn’t worth the time. Well peeps, I’m here to tell you that those people are dinguses. Avengers Arena is an action packed thrill-ride that features some of the most fun character moments and heart-wrenching sacrifices you’re likely to find in a mainstream comic book. it also showcases career-best work from Dennis Hopeless and Kev Walker. Marvel was kind enough to give folks another shot at reading it by publishing this new collection. The least you could do is read it. (Kris)
HARLEY QUINN / GOSSAMER SPECIAL #1 $4.99 (DC Comics) – More Looney Toons madness! And Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner are writing Harley Quinn again! Double fun! What happens when the big orange monster they call Gossamer washes up on the shores of Coney Island? He becomes friends with Harley, of course. But it’s not all fun and games as a giant robot shows up to ruin all their fun. It will still be fun for us, though. (Andrew)
MIGHTY MORPHING POWER RANGERS: SHATTERED GRID #1 $7.99 (Boom!) – The Conclusion of the epic Shattered Grid saga! The final battle with evil Tommy Oliver (a.k.a. Lord Drakkon) rages through time and space as the Rangers make desperate choices to stop what seems like the inevitable destruction of all of the Rangers that are and ever will be. Luckily, they have one major card left to place, and that card just happens to be a brand new, super kick-ass Megazord! Will it be enough to stop the greatest threat? Will the Power Rangers comic be able to keep the quality level up and reader’s attention after this arc? Important questions. Important questions, indeed. (Kris)
MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE #9 $3.99 (Marvel) – Issue 9 of Marvel Two-In-One. Why just last week, it feels like Sammy of Back Issue Bloodbath and I were talking about the first eight issues of this fun series starring the best two of the Fantastic Four. That’s because we were! Take a listen to that episode and then pick up issue 9 and enjoy. (Andrew)
WALK THROUGH HELL #4 $3.99 (Aftershock) – Walk Through Hell is a creepy, effective, atmospheric-as-all-hell horror comic with a tremendously engrossing crime procedural at it’s dark, gooey center. It’s unlike anything else on the shelves right now. It’s also, hands down, one of the best things Garth Ennis has done in a very long time. Also? Goran Sudzuka is doing unbelievable work on art. Just a helluva storyteller. Get in on this one while you still can, friends! (Kris)
NEW MUTANTS: DEAD SOULS #6 (OF 6) $3.99 (Marvel) – The final issue of this miniseries comes at the perfect time! Mr. Green and I will be talking with the cats that made this comic – Matthew Rosenberg and Adam Gorham – this Thursday at 8PM at Fan Expo Canada! (Rm 717A of the South Building). If you’re gonna be in Toronto that night, you should totally come to the show. For those that can’t make it, you can listen to the whole thing the following night at 7PM Eastern on www.realityradio101.com. But make sure to pick up this book as well. (Andrew)
