Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.
This week, we do things a little differently. Instead of dissecting a comic story or famous creator, we’re going to look at a specific character through various eras and retcons. We’ve only done this twice before on the show: way back in episode 23 with Daredevil and then again in episode 50 with Luke Cage. It’s been awhile, that’s for sure. Both of these episodes were even before Sammy officially joined the show! We were due for an episode like this for quite some time. Without further ado, this week’s episode is about the one and only Captain Cold!
Probably the most famous of the Flash’s rogues, Captain Cold was created by John Broome and Carmine Infantino back in the Silver Age as a criminal who specialized in slowing the speedster down with his cold ray. His early stories were quite goofy as they relied on mirages and a lack of understanding on how mirages actually worked. As time went on, Cold would become an uneasy ally of Wally West and even a straight up hero/bounty hunter. Eventually, Geoff Johns would get his hands on him and make him into a credible bad-ass super villain. But there would be many bumps in the road to get there. Take a listen as Sammy and Andrew peel back the layers of this complex character from DC Comics.
