Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by  Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.

REDNECK #16 $3.99 (Image)Donny Cates and Lisandro Estherren are shifting gears a little with this week’s installment of Redneck. Rather than focus on the battered Bowman clan’s recovery in Austin, we’ll be visiting an inmate of the Texas State Penitentiary system. Presumably, there will be some sort of Bowman family connection and all. But goddamn, Image is being real fucking coy about it. Hey, I’m sure there will be blood and guts at some point. It’s a vampire book, after all. And, y’know, HALLOWEEEEEEN! (Kris)

SCARLET BOOK 01 TP $14.99 (Jinxworld) – Hey kids, you enjoying the current Scarlet series from Jinxworld? Have you read the first series that takes Scarlet from victim of police brutality to modern day revolutionary? You haven’t? Well today’s you lucky day. Check out the new trade that collects the first story arch. It’s got kills! It’s got thrills. I hear it even has a few swears. It’s perfect contemporary dystopian reading to get your mind off the real dystopian present we’re living in. (Andrew)

BABYTEETH #13 $3.99 (Aftershock) – It’s almost Halloween, friends! What better way to gear up for the spookiest time of year than by spending your Wednesday with a child who may or may not be the anti-Christ and his favourite aunt in the most hellish of Hell dimensions? That’s right, there is no better way. Pick up this book, amigos! (Kris)

LODGER #1 $3.99 (IDW) – Never trust a handsome drifter. They’re either a killer or a conman or both. Dante is a travel blogger with an interesting side hobby. He kills the families he stays with. When Ricky Toledo finds out that the stranger she’s been crushing on killed her mother and framed her father, she wants nothing but revenge on this brown-eyed, handsome man. This story is from the minds of David and Maria Lapham. David is best known for heart warming comics like Stray Bullets. Expect a lot of blood. (Andrew)

RETURN OF WOLVERINE #2 (OF 5) $3.99 (Marvel) – ’ll be honest, I have not been enjoying a lot of Marvel’s mutant output in the past few years. Thus, I was not expecting all that much from this series. I was HOPING it’d be good, because I do love me some Wolverine. But hope and a fiver will get you the world’s saddest lap dance, you know what I mean? Of course you do. Anyway, the point is, my expectations were exceeded on this one. The book is solid. The art is great and the plot line is intriguing. They look to be setting up some interesting character exploration for the remainder of the series. So if you like your fisty-knifey mutant murder seshes with a heaping dollop of introspection, this book is for you! (Kris)

PUNISHER #3 $3.99 (Marvel) – It’s always fun reading a Matthew Rosenberg penned Punisher comic. It’s even better when he writes Daredevil, one of his favourite characters, into the story. Big Pun’s dealing with mercenaries on a train. It’s the Man Without Fear to the rescue! By rescue, I mean that DD want’s Frank Castle just as bad as the mercs do, but for different reasons. FUN! (Andrew)

THE WHISPERING DARK #1 $3.99 (Dark Horse) – MOAAAAR HORROR! Halloween is right around the corner, so let’s load the hell up on the scariest stuff we can find, amirite? Luckily, Dark Horse is gonna hook us up on that front with this new title from Christopher Emgard and Tomas Aira. When a chopper pilot is shot down behind enemy lines, she finds herself face to face with true horror on a scale that is barely comprehensible. Massive! Colossal! Cosmic, even. Oh, did I just say the magic word for all the Lovecraft nuts out there? I think I did. Not like it was on purpose or anything. (Kris)

SHORT & SKINNY GN $12.99 (Little Brown and Co.) – Most of us felt awkward growing up. Mark is no different. He’s undersized in middle school and that makes him nervous to talk to girls. Mark looks to his comics for the answer and decides to try out some “bulk-up” products that are advertised there. Like every kid in 1977, he finds a new obsession with Star Wars and eventually tries to make his own movie about a galaxy far, far away. It’s a fun, coming-of-age tale that works in comics and Star Wars. You know you want to read it. (Andrew)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #8 $3.99 (Marvel) – Hey, remember the Thieves Guild? You know, those New Orleans natives that turned up in some of the weirder 90s mutant comics and literally every Gambit-centric episode of the classic X-Men animated series? That group of guys and gals that look like they dress themselves exclusively with items found in Steven Tyler’s scarf closet? Yeah, them. Well it looks like they’re back in some form or other and they’ve got some beef with the Webslinger himself! This is the New York chapter of the the Thieves Guild, so maybe they’ll dress a bit more like they got their clothes out of Jay-Z’s scarf closet. I hear it’s pretty big. (Kris)

RED SONJA HALLOWEEN SPECIAL ONE SHOT $4.99 (Dynamite) – Good ol’ Red Sonja thought she would spend the Festival of the Dead drinking and beating the locals at arm wrestling. That all changes when an old woman enters the bar and asks for a warrior to save her son. Sonja agrees, of course, ’cause she’s bad-ass. What the old lady didn’t mention is that her son suffers the curse of lycanthropy. Now Sonja’s gotta go toe to toe with a werewolf! That’s an exciting Halloween if I ever heard one. Hope she survives the experience and all that. (Andrew)
