Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.
20 years ago, in the fall of 1998, Marvel Knights was born. An imprint at Marvel headed up by Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti, the focus was to take lesser characters and give them a new, unique style. Whether it was giving Daredevil a high profile writer in Kevin Smith, or giving the Punisher a new supernatural spin, they took a lot of risks. Some of those risks paid off and brought new audiences to the House of Ideas. Daredevil, Black Panther, Black Widow, The Inhumans, Marvel Boy and The Sentry all had success under the Marvel Knights Banner. The Punisher would eventually be a hit as well thanks to Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. Overall, it’s an imprint that fans remember with fondness.
Join us as Andrew and Sammy take look back on the first 3 years of Marvel Knights, going over the hits and misses. They also explain how the brand went on to change some customs not just at Marvel, but in the industry in general, and how this all lead to Joe Q moving up the editorial ladder right the EIC chair. It’s a fun walk down memory lane as we remember some of our favourite MK books. Take a listen and enjoy.
