Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. It’s another week where I’m flying solo. But I still got 10 picks to help with your comic selections this week.
SUPERMAN: KRYPTONITE DELUXE ED HC $29.99 (DC Comics) – This is probably the most underrated Superman story of all time! Everybody talks about Tim Sale’s work with Jeph Loeb. It’s great, there’s no denying that. But equally as good is this story he did with the late great Darwyn Cooke for the start of the Superman: Confidential series. Pick up the deluxe edition and see what I’m talking about.
CONAN THE BARBARIAN #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – What is best in life? To crush the sales charts, have awesome art and story driven before you, and to hear the adoration of the geeks! By Crom! Conan is back at Marvel and Jason Aaron is writing the comic! I’m sure Kris Johnson is busting a nut over this one.
JUGHEAD THE HUNGER #11 $3.99 (Archie) – Whoda thunk that this would be the most successful Archie title? Oh, all of you? I had no idea. This issue is the final showdown between Frankenmoose and Jugwolf. Two monsters enter. One leaves. Welcome the Thunderdome, bitch!
JOHN CARPENTER’S TALES OF SCI FI: TWITCH #1 (OF 5) $3.99 (Storm King) – Not enough horror for ya? Don’t worry, I’ve got another title for you to check out. This one mixes in a little science fiction for good measure. Unlikely murders! A threat to wipe out humanity! Duane Swierczynski and Richard Clark bring the craaaaazy! Check it out.
WOLVERINE: THE LONG NIGHT ADAPTATION #1 (OF 5) $4.99 (Marvel) – Earlier this year, Benjamin Percy (he who gave Green Arrow a solid Rebirth) wrote a podcast tale starring Wolverine, titled The Dark Night. He now brings us the comic adaptation, The Long Night, with artist Marcio Takara. Why the name change? Well you don’t have to be a DETECTIVE to figure out the SHADOW of this BAT. (I started out strong there but I eventually had to spell it out.)
CONAN READER TP $29.99 (Dark Horse) – Another Conan Entry! This one’s from Dark Horse. Whaaa? You see, folks, before Marvel got back the license, the Cimmerian King had a successful run at Dark Horse. Creators like Kurt Busiek, Fred Van Lente, Cary Nord and Jimmy Palmiotti told some ripping good yarns. So why capitalize on that by releasing a trade on the same day as Marvel’s shiny new #1. Very clever, Dark Horse. Very clever indeed.
CHAMPIONS #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – It’s a new #1 with a supersized, global team! Who’s on it? Let’s just say that if you got all the young heroes in Marvel together for a big group photo and then you chucked a big rock at them, no matter who you hit, there’s a good chance you would hit a Champion. Ms. Marvel leads a team with heroes in every country ready to take action! How will Jim Zub and Steven Cummings keep track of all of them? Find out in Champions #1…..and there’s probably a sinister story brewing as well.
WONDER WOMAN #61 $3.99 (DC Comics) – Love is Dead? (I coulda told you that.) Aphrodite thinks so and is trying to convince Steve Trevor as much in the middle of a war zone. But Steve won’t change his outlook. Looks like Wondy’s gonna have to save him and the two will have some more sexual tension that Back Issue Bloodbath‘s Sammy Younan will love.
IRON FIST MPGN TP $19.99 (Marvel) – This past fall, all of the Netflix Defenders not named Daredevil had their own digital first series. Jessica Jones and Luke Cage already had their’s released in trade. Now it’s Danny Rand’s turn. When a large number of palm readers and fortune tellers start showing up dead, Danny thinks that something supernatural is a foot. (Or it could folks fed up with con artists.? This is New York, after all.) Iron Fist is on the case!
SCARLET #5 (OF 5) $3.99 (Jinxworld) – Whew….finally at the end. Writing this entire column all by myself is tiring. I’ll be glad when Kris gets back. I’m sure Venom fans will be as well. Anyways, to steal a turn of phrase from my friend, if you are not reading the current Scarlet series, you are obviously suffering from a lack of nourishment in your comic diet. This issue, Scarlet escalates her campaign against corruption to the next level. (I’m thinking the cover gave that away.) Pick up this book and also track down all the issues that come before it. And pick you the first two trades while you’re at it! You’ll be glad you did.
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week (and back to our Tuesday time slot) with more choice cuts of comic goodness.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
