Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. There’s not a lot coming out this week due to the holidays, but there are still a few great books. Here’s my solo picks for the week. (Yes, I gave Kris some time off during the Christmas Season. I’m nice like that.)

X-FORCE #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – Hey kids, it’s an ALL NEW X-Force! Actually, it’s the original X-Force minus Cable, who recently bit the big one. Now Domino, Cannonball, Warpath and the rest of ’em are hot on the trail of Cable’s killer. Here’s where it gets all flippy floppy. The killer is a younger, time-displaced Cable. So the team is going to avenge Cable by taking down Kid-Cable? That’s right. Oh, and Deathlok is in this book as well. It might sound confusing but I’m sure our boy Ed Brisson and artist Dylan Burnett will make it all make sense.

SUPERMAN REBIRTH DLX COLL HC BOOK 03 $34.99 (DC Comics) – I think we can all agree that Peter Tomasi is the main driving force behind making Superman a cool comic character once again. Before his Rebirth run, Supes was either boring as a bag of wet hammers or cuckoo for coco puffs! But Tomasi, along with Patrick Gleeson, Doug Mahnke and more, changed all that. If you want to read some fun stories involving the antimatter universe, Deathstroke the Terminator and things that Superman is actually afraid of, pick up this book!

UNCANNY X-MEN #7 $3.99 (Marvel) – Another X-Book, another comic written by Ed Brisson. Okay, he didn’t write this one on his own. Matthew Rosenberg and Kelly Thompson also work their writing magic on these pages. If you heard our interview with Ed from a few weeks back, you know this book is a lot of fun. It’s Xciting, X-cellent, and X-traordinary! It’s other words that don’t actually start with X! Let’s all take a trip back to the Age of Apocalypse for another ripping yarn about the good ol’ X-Men.

HELLBOY AND THE BPRD 1956 #2 (OF 5) $3.99 (Dark Horse) – I’m not gonna lie. I haven’t read issue 1 yet. But look at that cover. How can you not want to read it after looking at that cover? It’s mighty fine. So pick up the book and see if the interiors live up to the hype!

BONE PARISH TP VOL 01 DISCOVER NOW EDITION $14.99 (Boom) – Here’s a crime book with an interesting hook. The hottest drug in New Orleans is Ash. Ash is made from the bones of the dead. There’s a lot of folks interested in controlling the distribution of that drug. It’s leads to a lot of folks ending up dead. At least whoever wins this war will have enough raw materials to make more drugs, right? The storytelling is first rate and the artwork by Jonas Scharf is AMAZING! If you like crime books about a drug that leaves people with terrifying visions, this is the comic for you. A new issue of the series also ships this week.

SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – I’m not gonna lie. I hated the first Superior Spider-Man comic. I didn’t care that Doc Ock was Spidey. So why am I recommending the new series? I like to support Christos Gage. I might not be crazy about Doctor Octopus as the Spider, but I’m willing to give Gage another chance at hooking me.

GREEN ARROW WAR OF THE CLANS ESSENTIAL EDITION TP $29.99 (DC Comics) – When The New 52 launched way back when, Green Arrow was one of the many casualties of poor writing. The beginning of that Green Arrow series was a terrible. Thankfully, it wasn’t all bad as Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino took a shot at the book and cleaned up a lot of what was going wrong for the series. And unlike the inferior work that came before it, this run is worthy of an Essential Edition. Check it out and see that there was actually some New 52 Green Arrow worth reading.

So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness.

If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
