Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. It’s another week where I’m flying solo. But I still got 10 picks to help with your comic selections this week.
GREEN LANTERN #3 $3.99 (DC Comics) – Hey, looking to buy a perfectly good Earth with some frozen justice leaguers? Have I got a deal for you! Turns out the third rock from the sun is up for sale on the alien black market. Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Core are gonna have to bust up this purchase with a good ol’ fashioned round up. Can’t wait to see Steppenwolf and Queen Bee get caught up in the raid!
CRIMINAL #1 $3.99 (Image) – Looks like 2019 is already starting strong with the release of the now monthly Criminal title’s first issue! Brubaker and Phillips are bringing you that sweet Criminal taste that’s less filling every month! Delicious! Teeg Lawson is a tough sonofabitch. Cops? Not a problem. Other crooks and heavies? Nothing a punch or a bullet can’t handle. His teenage son? That kid is gonna put Teeg in more trouble than he’s ever been, guaranteed!
CAPTAIN MARVEL #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – Carol Danvers is back on Earth in her brand new series from Kelly Thompson and Carmen Nunez Carnero. That’s pretty cool! Cap has been up in space for quite some time. It’ll be good to have her back in New York for a change. But that don’t mean that Carol’s free of her troubles. No, trouble seems to find Carol wherever she goes. Can’t wait to see what trouble she brings to the Big Apple once again.
SAVANTS #1 (OF 5) $3.99 (Source Point Press) – Teenager Amy Berg is a troubled teen with special abilities that has been taken by the government and put in a special school to help her with her abilities. Let’s be honest, whenever the government forces you to go somewhere or do something, it’s never a good thing. There’s more going on and it’s probably shady. Check out the last series that indie comics Godfather Gary Reed wrote before his death in 2016.
NOTHING NICE TO SAY GN $24.99 (Silver Sprocket) – Nothing Nice To Say was a webcomic that ran from 2002 to 2014. It was a funny and satirical look at punk music and culture. But it was much more than that. For the first time, the entire series is collected in this graphic novel. Give it a read if you like things that are good.
ASTONISHING X-MEN TP UNTIL OUR HEARTS STOP $17.99 (Marvel) – It feels like 2018 was a big comeback year for the children of the atom. A number of X-books popped up that had something new and fresh to say. One of those books was Matthew Rosenberg and Greg Land’s action-packed and hilarious run on Astonishing X-Men. Watch as Havok continues to ruin his reputation along with the reps of Beast, Dazzler, Colossus and Warbird. Dazzler’s rep is already pretty bad so that’s saying something. There’s also a zombie Banshee. There’s also that.
RED SONJA #25 $3.99 (Dynamite) – This issue, Sonja gets taken in by the power of music! By that I mean she rescues a musician and finds out that they have a lot in common. This issue features sounds to sooth the savage Sonja. That’s worth checking out in my opinion.
MODERN FANTASY TP $14.99 (Dark Horse) – It’s fun questing and and all that but it doesn’t always pay the bills. That’s why you gotta have something more secure, even when your a young Ranger woman looking for adventure. Join her and her friends (a reptilian drug dealer and a Dwarf maiden) as they attempt to save the world while trying to keep their day jobs.
PUNISHER #6 $3.99 (Marvel) – Hey, look! It’s a comic from my list of the TEN BEST COMICS OF 2018! This series sure is great. Punisher has been taking it to Hydra and has got Baron Zemo on the run. What’s that? Frank Castle’s been extradited to Bagalia? That’s the Hydra nation. Things don’t look good for Frankie. Or do they? Frank’s not locked in there with them. They’re all locked in there with Frank!
YOUNG JUSTICE #1 $4.99 (DC Comics) – Brian Michael Bendis is on fire these days. DC Comics gave him that fresh coat of paint he was looking for. Now, to make things even better, he’s working with Patrick Gleeson! That’s a winning combo. To top things off, they get to revive Young Justice and tell a story that will bring back Conner Kent! There’s even new heroes like Jinny Hex and Teen Lantern! Here comes some new teen hero stories with all the drama and action you’re expecting……trust me, there will be tons of drama. It’s a bunch of teenagers. How could there not be?
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week (and so will Kris Johnson) with more choice cuts of comic goodness.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
