Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by  Kris Johnson. (HE RETURNS!) Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.

AVENGERS #13 $3.99 (Marvel) – The origins of the Iron Fist! At this point I’m sure it’s no secret that I’m a massive fan of ol’ Danny Rand and every other individual who has become an immortal weapon. So it should come as no surprise that I am extremely stoked to see what Jason Aaron and Andrea Sorrentino have in store for us with this special flashback issue. Join me this Wednesday in reading this fine comic periodical to discover just how some random cavewoman discovered it would be a good idea to punch a dragon in the heart. (Kris)

MONSTRESS #19 $3.99 (Image) – Hey, I don’t think I need to tell you this, but you should really check out this FIVE TIME! FIVE TIME! FIVE TIME! Eisner Award Winning Comic. A new story arc begins with this issue. It’s a perfect jumping on point. But if you still need some convincing, go back and take a listen to the Back Issue Bloodbath episode all about this comic, complete with an interview with writer Marjorie Liu. And check out the book. (Andrew)

CRYPT OF SHADOWS #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – What do you get when you take Al Ewing (writer of Immortal Hulk) and Garry Brown (penciler of Babyteeth) and tap them as the creative team on a throwback Marvel horror title put together in celebration of the House of Ideas’ 80th anniversary? A guaranteed slot as one of my picks of the week, goddammit! Here’s hoping this sucker turns out to be as glorious as I imagine it will be. (Kris)

NAOMI #1 $3.99 (DC Comics) – The latest addition to the Wonder Comics Imprint is a MYSTERY! A mystery set in a world of heroes. Brian Michael Bendis is no stranger to that. Nor is he of a young protagonist looking for answers about their origin. So far, Bendis has been knocking it out of the park over at the Distinguished Competition. With David F. Walker and Jamal Campbell with him, this looks to be another home run! (Andrew)

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – Another week, another Donny Cates nutso, high concept, crazy fun comic book for your reading pleasure. With this latest Guardians of the Galaxy relaunch, Cates re-teams with his God Country and Thanos Wins collaborator Geoff Shaw to bring together what is quite possibly the most insane lineup the team has ever seen! Star-Lord! Cosmic Ghost Rider! Groot! Beta Ray Bill! Nova! Moondragon! Silver Surfer! Adam Warlock! Darkhawk! Phyla-Vell! Guardian! Any way you slice it, that’s a pretty freakin’ stacked roster. And with Cates and Shaw at the helm, whatever adventures they get up to will read like a dream and look like the motherfuggin’ Sistine Chapel (if that sumbitch was a comic book). A must read if ever there was. That is, if you like fun. (Kris)

WAR IS HELL #1 $3.99 (Marvel)WAR / Good God ya’ll! / What is it good for? / Absolutely….Comics? (Say it AGAIN!). War comics used to be a staple of the comics business. Here’s a brand new war comic to celebrate Marvel’s 80 years as a publisher! War Comics were a big part of that history. Plus, a new story from Howard Chaykin is not too shabby either. (Andrew)

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #1 $3.99 (Boom) – Sunnydale High’s “Most Likely to Slay A Crapload of Various Monsters” returns in this brand new series from BOOM! Studios. In this fresh take on the classic tv series, Buffy and her friends are re-imagined as teenagers living in the present day of 2019. What new challenges will Ms. Summers face in this new era? How will she maintain her (sort of) secret identity in an age when literally everyone has a camera at their finger tips? Will Willow’s path to her true self be more direct? Will Spike’s look be modeled after Orlando boy bands rather than Billy Idol? Valid questions all. Find the answers at your LCS this Wednesday! (Kris)

UNCANNY X-MEN ANNUAL #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – Hey kids! Do you like Cyclops? Well then, you will definitely want to pick up this issue from Ed Brisson and Carlos E. Gomez. There’s a whole lot of Cyclops going on there. ‘Nuff said. (Andrew)

ALIENS RESISTANCE #1 $3.99 (Dark Horse) – After being introduced to Amanda Ripley in Alien Isolation, and thrilling to and being terrified by that horror show in equal measure, all we really wanted was another Amanda Ripley video game on the same level. Well, we ain’t getting that. Buuuuut, the fine folks at Dark Horse are providing us with a glimpse into Amanda’s further adventures with this brand new comic series. I’d say that’s a mighty fine consolation prize, friends. Following the harrowing events on Sevastopol station, Amanda teams up with Colonial Marine Zula Hendricks in an attempt to expose the evil machinations of Weyland-Yutani and their experiments with the Xenomorph. I hope it turns out well for Amanda, I really do. Given what we know of the state of things when Ellen Ripley woke up from cryosleep, things ain’t looking so great. (Kris)

BLOSSOMS 666 #1 $3.99 (Archie) – I always knew there was something funny about those Blossom twins. Turns out one of them is the anti-christ. But which one? They both got the can-do attitude to be the beast. They both also want the title real bad. Wackiness will ensue. Oh, and blood will be spilled. I feel I don’t really have to warn you about that. But just in case, I thought I would just put that out there. You’re welcome, by the way. (Andrew)

So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness.

If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
