Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
ACTION COMICS #1007 $3.99 (DC Comics) – I’ve noticed more and more people voicing their displeasure with the general character of Superman lately. Folks say he’s lame and boring and too powerful and blah blah blah. That standard boilerplate Supes hate. To be fair, it is true that most writers don’t understand how to write a good Superman story. They don’t seem to get how to balance the godlike powers with the humanity pulsing underneath. Buuuuut, I’m hear to tell you Brian Michael Bendis is not one of those people. This book is the real deal, peeps. Everybody who has been pimping it is 100% correct. It’s quite possibly the best version of Superman we’ve seen in any medium in quite some time and you owe it to yourself to pick up this issue, the start of a new storyline, to see for yourself. Maybe pick up a copy for the haters while you’re at it. (Kris)
WEST COAST AVENGERS #7 $3.99 (Marvel) – The team’s in a bind. Let’s be honest, the team’s always in a bind. But this is a pretty big bind, even for them. They’re trapped in a murder dome controlled by a handful of second-string villains. Their powers are acting all wonky. What could make things worse? Marvel Boy showing up. That would do it. Will Kate’s ex-boyfriend Noh-Varr add more fuel to this fire? Or will he actually help things for once? Only one way to find out, kids. Pick up the book. (Andrew)
ICE CREAM MAN #9 $3.99 (Image) – Image’s tome of twisted tales, Ice Cream Man, heads to the Old West with its latest issue. Titled “Hopscotch Melange”, this one-shot story is the perfect jumping on point for any reader out there who’s been looking for the best time to take your first lick of this fucked up confection. Give it a whirl this Wednesday, ‘kay? (Kris)
BONE PARISH #6 (OF 12) $3.99 (Boom) – Oh look! It’s one of the comics that made my Best Comics of 2018 list. (I can still reference that list, right? It’s only been a few weeks.) A crime story in New Orleans. Ash, a drug that lets you see the dead’s memories is about to kick it up a notch! And just in time, too. There are major players trying to move in on the Winters family’s territory. All that ash could turn to dust. (See what I did there?) This series also features the best damn art around from Jonas Scharf. Check it! (Andrew)
DEAD MAN LOGAN #3 (OF 12) $3.99 (Marvel) – Old Man Logan’s worst nightmare comes true! Mysterio’s manipulations have caused the aged Canucklehead to mistake his pals in the Avengers for the ol’ fishbowlhead and his new pals at Hydra. Can the one-eyed Wolvie figure out the truth and halt his rampage before he makes himself some succulent Cap kebobs and nice meaty Hulk steaks? If I’m being honest, I could go either way. Hulk steaks sound kinda delicious. (Kris)
MYSTERIES OF LOVE IN SPACE #1 $9.99 (DC Comics) – In space, no one can hear you love. What? I guess that’s true. Find out with 8 tales of love in space featuring some of your favourite DC characters. Characters like Superman, Green Lantern, The New Gods and Starro. Wait, a love story featuring Starro? That just sounds creepy. At the price they’re asking for this 80 pager, it better be charming as fuck. (Andrew)
CAPTAIN AMERICA #7 $3.99 (Marvel) – It’s the start of a new arc. Cap is wanted for the murder of a major character. The full force of the US government has been turned towards his apprehension. Baron Von Strucker plans to take advantage of the frenzy to settle the score with the Super Soldier. All of which sounds cool as hell, of course, but you know what’s really got me excited for this arc? Writer Ta-Nehisi Coates (who’s been killing it on this run, by the way) will be taking shit to the next level when he’s joined by an absolute comic book penciling god in the form of Adam-fucking-Kubert. Face it. You’re buying this comic. (Kris)
THE ACTUAL ROGER #1 (OF 5) $1.50 (Alterna) – Hank Tucker, the director of The Tick animated series, brings us another comic take on comic book heroes. Roger Beaman is just an ordinary guy who gets a strange ability after a freak cosmic event. This leads him to become a sidekick to a hero that doesn’t really want him around. Based on the creator’s previous offerings, it’s bound to be a fun time. (Andrew)
X-FORCE #2 $3.99 (Marvel) – Somebody has set X-Force up, and now the whole world thinks they’re a bunch of no-good, murdering mutant marauders! I mean, sure, they are actively murdering people. But not the people they’ve been accused of murdering. If you’re gonna hate them, hate them for the right murders at least, right? It’s the principle, dammit! Anyway, the squad have teamed up with Deathlok and Kid Cable to get to the bottom of the conspiracy. Expect much insane action and a rocking good time with this one, friends. (Kris)
SKYWARD #10 $3.99 (Image) – Hey! It’s another comic from by Best Comics of 2018 list. (I don’t care what you say. I can still bring up this list. January hasn’t ended yet. I’m allowed to live in the past for just a little while longer.) This issue sees Willa (the hero of the book) teaming up with her enemy (the villain of the book) to stage a breakout. She’s trying to bring back gravity. He doesn’t want her to. What are they doing teaming up? Excitement and intrigue await you. Go give this title a read and find out why it was my second favourite title from last year! (Andrew)
