Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.

SHAZAM #3 $3.99 (DC Comics) – Last issue, the Shazam Family took a ride on the crazy mystical  subway deep in the bowels of the Rock of Eternity and ended up in the Funlands, one of the Seven Magical Realms that just so happens is lorded over by an enchanted tween calling himself King Kid! Also, we learned the “!” in “SHAZAM!” isn’t just a fun punctuation mark, oh no! It also indicates another being from which the titular superhero draws power beyond Solomon, Hercules, Zeus, and the rest. Could someone not under the influence of good drugs have crafted the plot details above? Perhaps. (Kris)

CAPTAIN MARVEL: BRAVER & MIGHTIER #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – Hey, lookie here! We got another Captain Marvel title hitting the comic shelves this week. You’d think she’s got a movie coming out or something. Anyways, this new comic features Carol being late for her own party as she has to fend off an Alien invasion. Just another day in the life for Captain Marvel, right? Or is it?!!? (Andrew)

MARVEL COMICS PRESENTS #2 $4.99 (Marvel) – The first issue of the MCP reboot scratched me right in those good-time, nostalgic places. You know the ones. Right behind WWF ice cream bars and around the corner from the sound of blowing in a Nintendo Cartridge? Right there. This week, Wolverine returns for another adventure, this time in the 50’s. But instead of Cap and Namor joining in on the fun, the newly returned Mister Fantastic, and newly butler-ed Gorilla-Man are tagging in. There should be something for everyone! But mostly me. Because that’s what’s important. (Kris)

FIRE TP NEW ED $14.99 (Jinxworld) – Another awesome Bendis indy book is now back in print! A college student turned secret agent based on events during the Regan administration. (LOOSELY based….okay got that in there.) This one of the first Bendis stories I ever read. It’s also one of the best spy comics I’ve ever read. Wanna find out for yourself? Pick one up and give it a read ’cause this book is on FIRE! (Can’t wait for the tweet from Sammy claiming gimmick infringement.) (Andrew)

BERSERK DELUXE EDITION HC VOL 01 $49.99 (Dark Horse) – Do you know of Berserk? After a whole shitload of manga, an anime series, a number of video games, and several feature films, I figure you’d at least have to have HEARD of Guts, a.k.a. the Hundred Man Slayer a.k.a. the Black Swordsman, right? What? You have not?! I’m stunned. STUNNED! Well, this is your chance to get in on the… 200th floor? Sure, let’s got with that. The 200th floor. That’s lingerie, housewares, and big dirty hardcovers containing 700 beautifully illustrated, blood soaked pages of epic adult fantasy. Seriously though, if you’ve never read Berserk before and want to try something new and hardcore as fuck this week, this is a great place to start. The series is considered a classic for a reason. Find out why. (Kris)

DAREDEVIL #2 $3.99 (Marvel) – Is Daredevil a murderer? The cops think so. There’s one specific cop who’s not going to rest until he brings him in for the death of a thief who took one too many hits from the man without fear! DD’s on shaky ground. So what do you do when you’re wanted for murder? Why go out on patrol, of course. Chip Zdarsky sure isn’t making Matt Murdock’s life easy now that he’s writing Daredevil. And that’s why we like the guy! (Andrew)

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #2 $3.99 (Boom) – I’ll be honest, I wasn’t blown away by the first issue of this here new Buffy. The big hook for the book was that it was supposed to reimagine the classic series as if it all took place in the here and now of 2019. I didn’t really notice any plot or character bits that really seemed to take advantage of the conceit. That said, this issue features the reintroduction of Drusilla and Spike, and ya’ll know I’ve just gotta see how this plays out. So yeah, Nu-Buffy gets one more kick at the can. Let’s see if it manages to impress together, friends.(Kris)

INVADERS #2 $3.99 (Marvel) – Hey! It’s another book written by Chip Zdarsky. Good ol’ Marvel is hitting us with a double fix of great writing in one week! Namor’s the bad guy again and the rest of the OG Invaders are trying to get to the bottom of it. Torch is making like Sam Spade, doing the detective work to find some answers. Cap’s got a different idea: head on down to Atlantis for a tête-à-tête with the Submariner….and his entire army. Not the best idea. Also, this means that Cap has to sport that weird helmet thingy he puts on when he goes underwater. He’s lacking in both logic and fashion sense. Good luck, Cap. You’re gonna need it. (Andrew)

X-FORCE #3 $3.99 (Marvel) – Speaking of nostalgia, in two short issues the latest X-Force reboot has thus far brought back the (almost) original incarnation of the team, Deathlok, and fucking Ahab (?!). What other surprises do Dylan Burnett and Ed Brisson have up their sleeves? The upcoming promo material seems to indicate chrome plating and lots of unnecessarily pointy headgear is on the horizon. Will this issue measure up to the original X-Force #3, wherein the gang teamed up with Spidey to take on the Juggernaut, and Shatterstar could somehow maintain a perfect seated position whilst flying through the air? Nothing is for certain. I’d be willing to bet no one’s feet will be magically obscured by strange mists and strategically placed hills this time around. (Kris)

SKYWARD TP VOL 02 HERE THERE BE DRAGONFLIES $16.99 (Image) – You may remember at the beginning of the year, I was heaping a lot of praise on this comic where a woman living in a low-gravity world is tasked with finding a way to bring gravity back to the masses. This makes her a fugitive as the powers that be don’t want things to go back to the way they were. On the run, she ends up on a road trip that features giant bugs, a plot to attack Chicago, and all other sorts of fun times. Pick up the trade (as well as Vol. 1) and find out what you’ve been missing. Don’t let this book float on by. (That’s two tweets I’m expecting now!) (Andrew)

So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness.

If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
