Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
DOOMSDAY CLOCK #9 (OF 12) $4.99 (DC Comics) – Last issue, Ozymandias, Batman and Rorshach tried to have a chat with Dr. Manhattan about ceasing his fuckery and putting things back the way he found them. Dr. M told them all to suck a fat one. This issue, the Legion of Superheroes may or may not return, and Superman may or may not sock an omnipotent being in the mush. (Kris)
DEADLY CLASS #37 $3.99 (Image) – If you got a chance to listen to last week’s Geek Hard (or have been a long time reader of this column), you know I’m a big fan of Deadly Class. And with good reason. It’s a bad-ass book that also has it’s share of heartfelt moments. And there’s lots of killing…..lots of it. This issue, Saya’s gotta escape from the Yakuza and her shithead brother. I’m guessing she’s gonna kill her way out. Gotta stay on brand. (Andrew)
CONAN THE BARBARIAN #4 $3.99 (Marvel) – KING CONAN! Conan sits atop the throne of Aquilonia having purchased his crown with the swing of his sword and geysers of blood. But not even a kingdom will stand between the Crimson Witch and her prize. She will have her revenge against the Cimmerian for the ills he inflicted upon her long ago. If I know anything about Conan, he’ll probably hack off a bunch of limbs and do a whole lotta stabby-stabby before it’s all said and done. (Kris)
ASTRO HUSTLE #1 $3.99 (Dark Horse) – Imagine you’re a criminal who’s been in cryogenic stasis for 60 years for your crimes. Now imagine when you wake up, your asshole brother is now president of the freakin’ Galaxy! That’s gotta be my worst nightmare. (Personally, my brother has always had delusions of grandeur and has openly talked about what he would do if he ran the world. So this hits a little close to home.) This also looks like an awesome book all about stealing and pissing off your brother. I’m in! (Andrew)
IMMORTAL HULK #14 $3.99 (Marvel) – The Hulk has seemingly purged himself of his spiritual infection, but the battle has cost him more than almost any other. Sounds like as good a time as any to visit your ex-wife whose dad has just been brutally murdered and who also believes you to be dead, eh Hulk? Yeah, I agree. It’s the PERFECT time. You so smart, Hulk. (Kris)
GREEN LANTERN #5 $3.99 (DC) – Hal Jordan’s police brutality has caught up with him. He’s quit the Lanterns to go join up with the Blackstars. That sounds about right. But in order to join, Countess Belzebeth needs him to pass a series of trials on a vampire planet that wants to kill him. Stay the course, Hal….and watch your neck. (Andrew)
RONIN ISLAND #1 $3.99 (Boom) – This week, BOOM! launches a new alternate history comic from the creative duo of Greg Pak and Giannis Milonogiannis. In the 19th century, something has attacked China, Japan, and Korea and destroyed the majority of their populations. The survivors flee to a hidden island, and from them springs a new society. While their peoples have been decimated, they forge ahead in an effort to find happiness and some semblance of a future. Unfortunately, their peace is short-lived when a new Shogun and his mutant hordes shatter their new reality. Some folks can never catch a break. (Kris)
MORNING IN AMERICA #1 $3.99 (Oni) – It’s 1983. Folks are going missing at a mysterious factory, the streets are fillin’ up with strange monsters, and it’s up to a tough-as-nails girl gang to get to the bottom of it. This sounds like the plot of some of the best 80s films. I think it’ll make for a great comic as well. (Andrew)
WALK THROUGH HELL #8 $3.99 (Aftershock) – After 7 issues of pitch black horror, Shaw and McGregor are finally at the precipice of some damn answers. They’ve found Carnahan deep within the labyrinth of terror that the child killer has somehow constructed in the bowels of an LA warehouse. Will the interrogation they’re planning yield truths they actually want to hear? (Kris)
CHAMPIONS #3 $3.99 (Marvel) – Last month, we got the chance to chat with writer Jim Zub about what’s important in The Champions series. He stressed that the book is all about the tough choices these teens make and the repercussions of those choices. One of those choices could break the team apart, especially when Ms. Marvel finds out. If you’re looking for a good mix of action and angst, Champions is definitely the book for you. (Andrew)
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
