Hey not sure what to watch this week on the small screen? No worries #SetTheVCR is here to help you make some of those decisions easier. Each week Sammy Younan and I will give you our picks for each day of the coming week. Please note – enjoyment NOT guaranteed.

Sure you have your old favourites on standby that never change. But maybe you are looking to freshen it up this week. If that’s the case then let us help you. All times are Eastern Standard Time so please adjust for your time zone.

It’s March Break! Time to shrug off your responsibilities and toss away your pants and get into some excellent tv.

Sunday, March 10

American Gods (8pm / Starz) – Season 2 of American Gods kicks off today. Which is great… if you’ve seen Season 1. Sigh. Comic book tv is a fantastic genre and growing and I can’t get to everything. Apparently, I’m a late bloomer in tv shows too! (Sammy)

Aretha! A Grammy Celebration for the Queen of Soul (9pm / CBS) – Aretha was a legend and deserves all the tributes. Tyler Perry hosts a tribute to the singer’s legendary career, featuring performances from Yolanda Adams, Shirley Caesar, Alessia Cara, Kelly Clarkson, Common, Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, John Legend, Patti LaBelle and more. (Mr. Green)

Monday, March 11

Punk (10pm / Epix) – You’ll wanna turn this four-part rockumentary series up to annoy your parents! (Also acceptable is responding with don’t tell me what to do! Which is great for punk terrible for tv recommendations…) Behold: Iggy Pop, Blondie’s Debbie Harry, Black Flag’s Henry Rollins, the Sex Pistols’ John “Johnny Rotten” Lydon and many others tell the story of the musical genre known as Punk. (Sammy)

The Passage (8pm / FOX)FINALE ALERT! Possibly your last chance to watch this show. While the ratings are ok they are not guaranteed renewal numbers. On a network like FOX, which has a record of cancelling genre shows quickly this could indeed be the finale. However, stranger things have happened and maybe this show bucks the trend. (Mr. Green)

Tuesday, March 12

Nothing!– I was gonna put something here but I noticed Mr. Green suggest Bob Saget. Anything I suggest is not gonna stand up next to Bob Saget. So… Bob Saget it is. (Sammy)

Videos After Dark (10pm / ABC) – In the years after Full House Bob Saget has been on a mini-crusade to show that was not who he really is. This new twist on his beloved AFV series he presents home videos with a much darker & edgier feel. So I assume fewer shots to the nuts and more strippers falling off poles. (Mr. Green)

Wednesday, March 13

Triple Frontier (3am / Netflix) – This better live up to its title… I wanna see triple frontier ruckus! We got ex-special forces using their skillz to pay the billz by pulling off a heist: stealing a drug lord’s fortune. This has been playing at TIFF in downtown Toronto however we can now see ruckus without pants. Yo, truly we live like kings. (Sammy)

Zombie House Flipping (9pm / A&E) – You know home reno shows have hit rock bottom when they are trying to add Zombie to the title to give that genre feel. Regardless of the title the idea of showing homes that are literally at rock bottom and flipping them on the cheap to not only make money flipping but what people really can do to a home. Reno’s don’t always need to cost 10’s of thousands of dollars to do. Hard work and some creativity go a long way. (Mr. Green)

Thursday, March 14

Nothing! – Project Blue Book just finished… excellent day to begin watching the entire season. OR! Start re-watching Barry Season 1 on HBO… Season 2 drops at the end of this month and I cannot wait. Fonzie is gold! This show is so violent, so dark, so funny… in that order. So yeah use tonight at a study break so you don’t hafta do any homework once you get home. (Sammy)

A.P. Bio (8:30pm / FOX) – One of my personal favourite shows from last season. Jack had a rough year moving Toledo and was just about to get out when all of his revenge planning finally came back and bit him in the ass. Now he is working on a new plan to leave. However this will not stop him from not teaching his class… wait of course, it does. He has no intention of ever teaching A.P. Bio to his students. Just Revenge. (Mr. Green)

Friday, March 15

Love, Death and Robots (3am / Netflix) – Netflix goes all Adult Swim with this filthy animated series brought to you by the Deadpool guy (Tim Miller) and the Fight Club guy (David Fincher). Those two movies should give you a sense of what to expect. As should this trailer… that’s handy! (Sammy)

Turn Up Charlie (3am / Netflix) – Netflix brings Idris Elba to the small screen again with Charlie Ayo failed DJ looking to get back to his glory. Hitting his lows and some highs on his way back to music success. He agrees to help take care of his best friend’s daughter. The show is a little uneven but Elba is so magnetic you can’t stop watching. (Mr. Green)

Saturday, March 16

One Night for One Drop: Imagined by Cirque du Soleil (8pm / CBS) – I’ve occasionally classed up my life by attending a Cirque du Soleil show. I’m not sure I followed the plots… it’s not exactly linear narrative storytelling here. There may not also be a plot as well which explains my confusion. Tonight CBS is giving me an opportunity to slow things down and I don’t get to annoy people around me by whispering which one is the killer?! (Sammy)

Nothing! – I gots nothing for this week. Watch Sammy’s suggestion above. (Mr. Green)

Well, there you go plenty of options for the week ahead. Enjoy yourself and watch responsibly.

If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
