Hey not sure what to watch this week on the small screen? No worries #SetTheVCR is here to help you make some of those decisions easier. Each week Sammy Younan and I will give you our picks for each day of the coming week. Please note – enjoyment NOT guaranteed. All times are Eastern Standard Time so please adjust for your time zone.
This is one of those weeks where “we’re in the golden era of television” is a hard sell. Still undaunted Mr. Green and I have found some television worthy of your VCR.
Sunday, March 24
March Madness (5:15pm / CBS) – Unlike James, I ain’t going Into the Badlands so I sorta got nothing. Maybe watch March Madness? Thankfully there’s a Duke game on. (Sammy)
Into The Badlands (10pm / AMC) – The beginning of the end of the series. This marks the beginning of the back half of season 3, which is the end of the show. Hopefully, they were able to wrap up the story so fans get some sort of ending they can be pleased with. When shows get cancelled like this it can be really tough for all involved to find a happy resolution for the cast, crew & the fans. Fingers crossed that they made it work. (Mr. Green)
One Nation Under Stress (9pm / HBO) – Hillary Clinton instantly lost with her deplorables comment; it wasn’t that she said it: it’s that she fully believed it. So fired. HBO’s latest documentary One Nation Under Stress documents many of their struggles which culminates in suicide and of course…rage. Like what did you think was gonna happen?! I point this out not as an indictment rather as an opportunity for radical ideas like Basic Income. Think of the comic books you could buy with that money…which will reduce stress and make you life better. So here we are…with this incredible opportunity to galvanize change. Now What? (Sammy)
The Fix (10pm / NBC) – Apparently former LA Prosecutor Marcia Clark is still bitter after losing the OJ case. With The Fix, she gets to live out her revenge fantasy against him for a weekly TV audience. This show looks all kind of schlocky trash TV that will remind viewers of ’80s nighttime soaps like Dynasty and Falcon Crest. A solid cast might make the show better than it deserves like Johnny Cochran said: “If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit.” (Mr. Green)
Tuesday, March 26
Nate Bargatze: The Tennessee Kid (3am / Netflix) – I dunno who or what a Nate Bargatze so I’ll give this 10 or 15 minutes. Make me laugh clown… make me laugh. (Sammy)
WWE Smackdown LIVE! (8pm / USA) – Hopefully, Kofi Kingston gets his shot for the title against Daniel Bryan at Mania this week. After getting screwed out of his title shot last week by Vince, the New Day apparently threatens quitting over the slap in the face of Kofi. The stakes are getting high in the last 2 weeks until Wrestlemania! (Mr. Green)
Wednesday, March 27
Happy!: Season 2 (10pm / Syfy) – You’ll be Happy! to know I… never finished Season 1. In the world of tv streaming…sometimes you finished a season so quickly and you’re impatiently awaiting the next one. Other times the next season shows up so “quick.” This feels quick… the last episode aired on January 31, 2018. Throwing this on the list; I wanna finish this show just not sure when. Which is just sad! (Sammy)
What We Do in the Shadows (10pm / FX) – Based on the movie of the same name. The series will have a lot to live up to. The movie became an instant cult classic with legions of fans around the world. The original cast is not involved in this version but many of the creative team are. I can’t wait to check it out this week and the weeks ahead. Even if it’s only half as good as the movie should appease the fans. PROGRAMMING NOTE: This week on the show we will be talking LIVE with Veronika Slowikowska from the show. (Mr. Green)
Thursday, March 28
Opening day for Major League Baseball (1pm / ESPN) – The Dodgers are hosting the Diamondbacks and the Angels take on the A’s. A random observation? I don’t watch baseball… I can’t name a Toronto Blue Jays player. I can’t name any baseball players really…which is not a good sign. You have a marketing issue when the general public can’t name your superstars. I know somebody signed a big contract recently…he plays for a team with a red colour in their logo? Really I’m just posting this to say…I like hotdogs. (Sammy)
Abby’s (9:30pm / NBC) – NEW SHOW ALERT! – NBC is getting really desperate to climb back into the picture as a major network again. After years of dominance in the ratings each week they fell on hard times over the last 2 decades. Sure they had some hits but not a consistent run like the ’80s & ’90s. Here they dig deep into the bag of tricks with an obvious Cheer’s rift. I will give it a chance for 2 reasons: 1) Natalie Morales, she should be a bigger star by now. And 2) I’m fascinated by the LIVE OUTDOOR audience gimmick. Hopefully, the show is better than this trailer. (Mr. Green)
Friday, March 29
The Highwaymen (3am / Netflix) – Alright: Triple Frontier is a Dolly Parton bust. It’s terrible. Word on the street is out. So let’s try this again, shall we? The Highwaymen has outlaws, gangsters and tommy guns. This should be good… this should be ruckus. (Sammy)
On My Block (3am / Netflix) – Until this week I didn’t even know this show existed. However now I need to watch it. The trailer speaks to me on so many different levels right now it’s hard to put into actual words. Excuse while I get my binge watching pants on and hunker down with season 1 so I’m ready for season 2. This is my kind of party! (Mr. Green)
Saturday, March 30
Nothing!– It’s Saturday so go out there and shake your Money Maker! (Though maybe look up in Urban Dictionary just what exactly is a Money Maker?) (Sammy)
Nothing! – Maybe this is the perfect time to sort & categorize your comics, movies or your vintage pyrex collection. I would recommend something however there was nothing jumping out at me screaming to be added to the list this week. That’s Saturday for you. (Mr. Green)
Well, there you go plenty of options for the week ahead. Enjoy yourself and watch responsibly.
