Hey not sure what to watch this week on the small screen? No worries #SetTheVCR is here to help you make some of those decisions easier. Each week Sammy Younan and I will give you our picks for each day of the coming week. Please note – enjoyment NOT guaranteed.

Sure you have your old favourites on standby that never change. But maybe you are looking to freshen it up this week. If that’s the case then let us help you. All times are Eastern Standard Time so please adjust for your time zone.

“Behold all the seasons and shows I’ve missed for various nonsensical reasons giving me another opportunity via another season. It remains to be “seen” if I’ll watch. That’s the nice thing about tv… you often get a second chance even if you don’t deserve it.”

Barry (10pm / HBO) – Gratefully Barry returns for Season 2 which is impressive since so few people watched Season 1 (is it considered irony when a show about a hitman isn’t a hit?). The dark show is so much fun: it’s got real violence and it’s got real comedy (it’s that weird tone in we’re currently seeing in tv shows like Atlanta and Orville). Bonus? Fonzie is in it and he’s incredible. Highly recommend this show: especially since Bill Hader is a fine nerd like all of us. (Sammy)

The Walking Dead (9pm / AMC)FINALE! This episode almost makes me want to watch again it again. As the snow finally falls in this show. Sure it’s taken 7 seasons and about 12 years in show continuity but hey they are finally letting the snow fall. This should have happened all the way back in season 2 on the farm but hey nothing could have saved that season, nothing. SO finally we get to see it on the show but my real question is for how long? is this going to be a one and done, or are they going to have to deal with snow all next season? I’m guessing time jump again for budget reasons. (Mr. Green)

Monday, April 1

The Twilight Zone (CBS All Access) – In Toronto, this third Twilight Zone reboot will air on Thursday, April 4 (not April 1st!!) on City TV at 9pm. It’ll be a 2-hour premiere: Nightmare at 30,000 Feet (which can’t improve on the original! We all know this because Nightmare was remade in the 80s.) & The Comedian with Kumail Nanjiani. We’ll see. I’ve been through these reboots before… plus the movie and while they’ve all been “submitted for your approval” none of em have a lingering hold on pop culture like Serling’s original vision (which you can happily still enjoy on Space!). (Sammy)

Magnum P.I. (9pm / CBS)FINALE! I still can’t get over how much I have enjoyed watching this show this year. A return to the heyday of ’80s action dramas. Although there have been some threads of throughline in the season it hasn’t been a major focus. The finale does return to that thread though which is honestly to be expected based on the number of times it has been discussed on the show over the season. with an earlier episode tackling it head-on. Hopefully, they keep it to these one-off type episodes and not make it a huge part of the overall series. (Mr. Green)

Tuesday, April 2

The Last O.G. (10:30pm / TBS) – Let’s stick with tv shows that were surprisingly renewed Alex. Did anybody watch the first season of The Last O.G.? Did you? I honestly meant to get around to it: Tracy Morgan is hilarious but I… ah took a nap. Truly I spend my days mystified at what gets renewed; surprised at what’s cancelled. (Sammy)

Johnsonville ACL Cornhole Championships (8pm / ESPN2) – I know what the hell is Cornhole and how is it a sport. Well, remember playing beanbag toss as kids in school when it rained outside or at a campsite or a trailer park? Well, that’s the game at hand. Yes, this is taken very seriously by those who play it and it’s fans. I worked for a company that had a North American Championship for its employees that got to travel to Georgia for the finals to play against other employees. I can’t make this shit up it’s so bizarre. So yeah, there you go the ACL Championship. Watch it. (Mr. Green)

Wednesday, April 3

Brockmire (10pm / IFC)Brockmire got up to season 3?! Granted this is a baseball-themed comedy and baseball is America’s pastime still season three? If you noticed a pattern here… I dig Hank Azaria (dude’s still killing it on The Simpsons!) and I had good intentions to watch the show but I… ah went out for brunch. 3 seasons is too deep; might be too late for me but save yourselves. (Sammy)

Happy! (10pm / SyFy) – The show returned last week and I need to get caught up in a big way. I watch the part of season one but held off on finishing it due to other things on the go. Now I have to hammer through those episodes to get back on track up the latest episode. Man, that year flew by. Still looking forward to the catch up as I love all things, Christopher Meloni. (Mr. Green)

Thursday, April 4

Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger (8pm / Freeform)SEASON PREMIERE! Cloak & Dagger did not live up to its name people clearly discovered it and enjoyed it. That’s good news for these “Runaways.” I had positive intentions to watch the show but I… ah went out to pick up a pastrami sandwich and I missed the whole season. I’m gonna try again with Season 2. (Sammy)

Supernatural (8pm / CW) – This year has continued to meander all around looking for something. The boys just haven’t quite found it yet, as it keeps eluding them. Oh right, a big bad. Most seasons of the show have had a big bad of some kind however this year they have been ducking and weaving on that issue. Which is troublesome as they only have 6 episodes left till the end. Which keeps bringing me back to making Jack the big bad for the season. Which will be anti-climatic. I’m not saying that I won’t enjoy it but after they dispatched Micheal so easily (by Jack & getting his full powers back) recently the season feels lost. Hopefully, this week begins the final tightening as we close in on the finish line. (Mr. Green)

Friday, April 5

Doom Patrol (9pm / Space)CANADIAN PREMIERE! I enjoyed Doom Patrol’s appearance in Titans. Like Titans, Doom Patrol first appeared on the DC Universe streaming service. (We’re supposed to be getting Swamp Thing later this year and I cannot wait for that.) However, in a weird quirk of streaming and rights and other online nonsense Doom Patrol is airing in Canada on Space and Crave. And James Bond is public domain here. I don’t understand what’s happening anymore. So rather than figure all that out let’s just watch Doom Patrol and call it a day. (Sammy)

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (3am / Netflix) – I really enjoyed the first part of the series. Sabrina has fully embraced her role as a witch at the expense of some of her former human world friends. She also as a part of Part 1’s finale gained her trademark white hair from the comics. It’s certainly a different take from the previous TV show version with Melissa Joan Hart as Sabrina. This is way darker and doesn’t hold back from those dark elements lurking in every shadow. I’m hoping that the magic that has fans spellbound keeps up in Part 2. (Mr. Green)

Saturday, April 6

The Final Four (3pm / CBS) – The 2019 Zion Williamson sweepstakes is coming to an end. Even if Duke didn’t make it this far or is not the winner Zion is always going to be a winner because he’s going to sign some big fat checks. March Madness is a fantastic trailer for upcoming NBA seasons what kind of players we can expect. Especially these tight games towards the end of the tournament: they help us all get a better sense of the players. March Madness is a fantastic appetizer before the NBA Playoffs start on April 13th the real season. So let’s do this thing yo! (Sammy)

Saturday Night Live (11:29pm / NBC) – Kit Harrington hosts with musical guest Sara Bareilles. This will be one of the last promotional pushes for Game of Thrones which returns to HBO on April 14th. Plus SNL can be funny at times so there’s a point in its favour. (Mr. Green)

Well, there you go plenty of options for the week ahead. Enjoy yourself and watch responsibly.

If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
