Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
IMMORTAL HULK #16 $3.99 (Marvel) – Rick Jones is dead. Has been for a while. The Immortal Hulk’s mental state is pretty fucked up. Has been for a while. Coincidence? Perhaps. Maybe the lack of Hulk’s tether to humanity has caused him to slip further into insanity. Perhaps he’s just a mean old bastard and always has been. Either way, Jones died while Hulk was away and now Jade Jaws wants some answers. And he’ll get them. Via smashing! (Kris)
RED SONJA #3 $3.99 (Dynamite) – Hail to the Queen, baby! But for how long? It’s one thing to defeat and outwit Dragan The Magnificent. It’s another thing to stay atop the mountain. With spies and vipers in her mist, Sonja will be working overtime to keep her spot as the Queen of Hyrkania. But that’s what Sonja does: deal with the haters. (Andrew)
CAPTAIN AMERICA #9 $3.99 (Marvel) – The Big Bads tossed Cap into a cage with the worst of the worst, and now, without his fancy star-spangled togs and iconic shield, the First Avenger needs to find a way to survive. Lucky for Cap, he’s still fucking Cap, and there ain’t no way a motley crew of killers and lowlifes are gonna take him down. (Kris)
STILETTO #1 (OF 3) OFFICER DOWN $5.99 (Lion Forge) – If you’ve been reading this column for awhile, you know I’m a sucker for pulp noir tales and this one gets pretty pulpy, indeed. Two police detectives protecting a material witness have to uncover the truth. But there’s a leak in the department known only as STILETTO and they’ve got to find him before shit hits the fan. This is my kinda story, kids. (Andrew)
YOUNG JUSTICE #4 $3.99 (DC Comics) – Young Justice finally reunites to liberate Gemworld from the clutches of Dark Opal! Word has it that that big ole douche also has some pretty nasty plans in mind for Earth. So yeah, it’s probably best if the super-kids nip this thing in the bud. (Kris)
PUNISHER #10 $3.99 (Marvel) – These days, Frank Castle is squaring off against some pretty big guns. He’s waging war against Baron Zemo on the streets of Bagalia. But even though he’s switch dance partners, there’s still somebody who’s not done dancing. Jigsaw is back to make Punisher’s life a living hell once again. Zemo’s also called in a bunch of other bangers as well, but Jiggy’s the one to be afraid of. (Andrew)
GHOSTBUSTERS 35TH ANNIVERSARY #1 $3.99 (IDW) – If there’s something strange / in your neighbourhood / for like 35 years / who you gonna call? / Ghostbusters! That’s right, the original Ghostbusters are back to bust some ghosts that may or may not prove the existence of Atlantis. It’s been a while, so the gang might be a little rusty. But if you’ve been missing Peter, Winston, Ray, and Egon, pick up this comic to definitively prove busting makes you feel good. (Kris)
GREEN LANTERN #6 $3.99 (DC Comics) – Hal Jordan’s still working towards getting his Blackstar merit badge. In his final test, he’s gotta kill Adam Strange. Is that all? The Blackstars have taken over Rann and this is the final big move Hal needs to make to show he’s on board. I wonder what he’ll do. (Andrew)
WAR OF REALMS #1 (OF 6) $5.99 (Marvel) – I’m approaching Andrew-levels of disdain for big event comics these days, as the last several have been disappointing. THAT SAID, Jason Aaron has been building to War of Realms for quite some time. As a longtime fan, I have faith he’ll stick the landing. “What the hell Is the War of Realms?”, you may ask. The Dark Elf Malekith has returned from the dead and united the dark elves, trolls, frost giants, fire goblins, douche-angels from Heven, and assorted other mystical malcontents into the most formidable army. With this army, Malekith has conquered 9 of the 10 Realms. Only Midgard remains. Will the assembled might of Thor and every superhuman on Earth be enough to stop Malekith or is the Marvel U in for a Norse-centric rebrand? Pick up this special with art from Russell Dauterman and an Arthur Adams cover for a Viking-infuses dose of mayhem. (Kris)
SECTION ZERO #1 (OF 6) $3.99 (Image) – Whew….glad that’s over. Kris’s last recommendation felt like an event book in itself, it was so long. Anyways, enough with suggesting money grabs. Let’s talk about a new miniseries from Image. Section Zero comes from the minds of Karl Kesel and Tom Grummett and brings us a team of adventurers that are on the look out for the weird and wild and wacky. Described as “Jack Kirby does the X-Files“, expect UFOs, monsters and lost civilizations. And expect fun. This will be a great palate cleanser after reading that War of Whatever. (Andrew)
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
