Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
DETECTIVE COMICS #1001 $3.99 (DC Comics) – We got an Arkham Knight cameo/intro in Detective Comics #1000, and sure, that aroused some interest. But I want more, dammit!! Luckily, just who the Arkham Knight is and what his goals are will be the subject of this series for some time to come. So more we shall get! Here’s hoping the resulting tales are just as awesome as what Rocksteady gave us with the Arkham video games. Let’s be real. If the comic version of AK turns out to be half as solid as all that then we’re still pretty damn lucky. (Kris)
SYMBIOTE SPIDER-MAN #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – If you’ve been reading this column for the past year, you know I’m not a fan of Venom. That said, I am a fan of the symbiote when it was just the alien costume. Spidey’s black costume adventures were some of my favourites. So here comes Peter David and Greg Land with a brand new story set in the times when Peter rocked a darker look. Of course I’m gonna check it out. And this issue also features everyone’s favourite fishbowl head, Mysterio. That’s a bonus! (Andrew)
FAITHLESS #1 (OF 5) $4.99 (Boom) – Whenever Brian Azzarello puts out a new comic, I will be there to purchase it, read it, and (hopefully) enjoy it. When you tell me that Azzarrello’s new comic is an occult-erotic-fantasy-mystery book, I really don’t know what to make of that. Am I intrigued? Sure. Will it be any good? I hope so? And yes, that question mark is warranted. That said, when the artwork is provided by Maria Llovet, you can be sure that it will be a beautiful looking experiment at the very least. (Kris)
KISS: THE END #1 $3.99 (Dynamite) – Amy Chu is an amazing writer. How do I know this? She made me like a KISS comic. I don’t hate KISS but I’m not a fan either. Amy did the unthinkable with the last KISS series. She made non-KISS fans like me give a damn about that book. KISS fans liked it as well I hear. So here’s another series starring KISS that she’s written, about a guy finding himself on the wrong side of life who needs the help of KISS to make his way back to the land of the living. You can bet your ass I’m checking this one out! (Andrew)
SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #4 $3.99 (Marvel) – Conan is forced to spend some quality time in a labyrinth while battling both an army of the undead and those jerks that’ve pledged their loyalty to Koga Thun. It’s not a fun time for everyone’s favourite Cimmerian Barbarian to begin with. When you throw in the fact that Conan’s buddy Suty is simultaneously going through some serious, uh, obstacles let’s say, well, can calling a time out an option? (Kris)
ABSOLUTE SCARLET HC $75.00 (Jinxworld) – If you caught the Scarlet episode of Back Issue Bloodbath, you got to hear my glowing review of this series. Now you can read the whole damn thing in one sitting with the new Absolute Edition of the entire series! You don’t have to read the whole thing at one time. You can space it out if you want. But there’s nothing stopping you from binge reading. Enjoy it the way that works best for you. No judgement either way. (Andrew)
FAIRLADY #1 $3.99 (Image) – Jenner Faulds is the first female Fairman in the history of The Feld and some folks are not taking the appointment well. Just what is a Fairman? It’s a private investigator tasked with solving unsolvable cases in the fantasy realm Jenner calls home. In other words, this comic is a detective procedural set in a world of sword, sorcery, and high adventure. How could you not want to check out just what the hell that looks like? (Kris)
ORPHAN AGE #1 $3.99 (Aftershock) – I do love a title that’s a play on words. But it’s more than clever word play that catches my eye here. It’s a new take on a semi-post apocalyptic scenario. Twenty years ago, all the adults died, leaving children to deal with the fall of civilization. Two decades later, the children are grown but still haven’t fully recovered. Society has taken a few giant leaps backwards and the only real power in the region is the New Church. The New Church is a religion formed by angry children who blame everything on the dead adults. The New Church is looking to burn down the world and only a rag tag group of folks stand between them and destruction. Sounds like the feel good comic of the week! (Andrew)
MURDER FALCON #7 $3.99 (Image) – Jake and Murph need to get their hands on the Horn of the Dead before Magnum Khaos does. Their band, Brooticus, is more powerful than ever. But having suffered a pretty devastating loss last issue and with the armies of evil growing in strength by the moment, Team Murder Falcon is really gonna have to embrace the Metal if they hope to survive the coming storm m. Also, can we just take a moment to appreciate his how much of a beast Daniel Warren Johnson is as a writer and artist? I don’t think anyone draws more kinetic panels than this dude. Absolutely gorgeous, visceral and metal as fuck work going on in this book. (Kris)
CAPTAIN MARVEL #4 $3.99 (Marvel) – There’s always somebody that’s got your number. Somebody you can’t beat. For Carol, that’s Rogue of the X-Men. When Rogue was a young baddie, she stole Marvel’s powers and lefter her for dead. It was so bad that Carol had to go and get new powers as Binary and everything! Needless to say that Carol never fully got over that. Now the Nuclear Man has revealed his big secret weapon. Surprise, surprise, it’s Rogue! This douche has done his homework. It’s time to go another round with the one that’s got your number, Carol. Hope you survive the experience. (Andrew)
