Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
LITTLE BIRD #2 (OF 5) $3.99 (Image) – Last issue, Little Bird travelled deep into the Canadian North to rescue the man mountain known as The Axe from an existence of slowly rotting in a maximum security prison cell. Unfortunately for Little Bird, the ordeal bought her a bullet through the neck. On the flip side, a seemingly invincible mass of scar tissue and beard hair is intent on getting her some help. So, ya know, even Steven. (Kris)
WEST COAST AVENGERS #10 $3.99 (Marvel) – If there’s one thing I’ve learned from all my years of reading comics, it’s that cults are the worst. Didn’t really need much to learn that. You can tell right from the get go. Especially if they’re a cult of vampires that think America Chavez is the chosen one they’ve been looking for. Now the team is in a den of vamps trying to save America and protect their necks all at the same time. Just another wacky adventure for our heroes of the left coast. (Andrew)
BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #4 $3.99 (Boom) – The Buffy ReVamp got off to a pretty damn slow start, but things have picked up considerably. I’ve really enjoyed the last couple issues. This week, the first arc of the Boom! series concludes and one of the Scoobies is gonna eat it. Also, a major character is set to debut. My money is on a certain handsome vampire with a cro-magnon brow. (Kris)
ASSASSIN NATION #2 $3.99 (Image) – You might not believe this but there sure is a lot of killing in this book. Did the name give that away? Anyways, someone’s definitely trying to kill Boss Rankin. The assassins left standing have been hired to keep him safe. I’m sure nothing else will go wrong from here on in. Wow, that sarcasm meter is going off pretty loud right now. Can you hear it? (Andrew)
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #4 $3.99 (Marvel) – The Dark Guardians are hot on Gamora’s heels after nearly downing the human rocket, aka Richard Rider, aka Nova last issue. Does that mean we’ll finally catch up with Gamora after having everyone and their brother talk about her for the last 3 issues? I hope so because I imagine it will inevitably lead to the New Guardians throwing down with their evil counterparts, which is sure to be all kinds of fun. And that’s what I’m about, ya’ll. That fun.(Kris)
MOTH & WHISPER TP VOL 01 $14.99 (Aftershock) – This is a series I missed out on when the issues were released. Thankfully I can catch up now with the trade. What happens when your two master thief parents go missing and you want to keep up appearances? You take up the mantle of thieving and make it look like they’re still in business. That’s what Niki does when their parents, Moth and Whisper, go missing. Why? You’ll have to pick up the book to find out. (Andrew)
MARY SHELLEY MONSTER HUNTER #1 $3.99 (Aftershock) – In this new series from Aftershock, writers Adam Glass and Olivia Cuartero-Briggs and artist Hayden Sherman posit that Mary Shelley’s seminal horror novel wasn’t so much a work of fiction, but a full blown autobio. Mary Shelley: Super bad-ass? I can dig it. (Kris)
SHIELD BY HICKMAN & WEAVER TP HUMAN MACHINE $24.99 (Marvel) – I remember a time when I waited for this series to come out on bated breath. But then it took so long between issues, I gave up waiting. The final two issues quietly came out last year and I forgot to pick them up. But that’s all in the past. The collected edition is here. I can pretend I didn’t waste my life away waiting for this series to finish only to feel nothing when the book came to it’s conclusion. I can push down those feelings of abandonment and just enjoy this comic like I originally intended. I’m fine. Everything’s fine. (Andrew)
NAOMI #4 $3.99 (DC Comics) – This book about a young girl uncovering her mysterious origins in the DCU reads wonderfully, looks better than almost every other comic on the shelves, and features a helluva central mystery. I have no idea where this thing is going, but you damn well better believe I’m along for the ride. You should be too. (Kris)
DAREDEVIL #4 $3.99 (Marvel) – Hey Kids! Have you been reading Daredevil by Zdarsky and Checchetto. You should as it’s been a fun ride so far. Especially with this month’s guest star. The Punisher and Daredevil have never really seen eye to eye. Partly because they have a different view of what justice looks like. Partly because Daredevil is blind. But that’s all changed. At least, Frank Castle thinks so. Word on the street is that Daredevil killed a criminal. Big Pun wants to initiate him into the “guys who kill crooks” fraternity. Matt Murdock wants no part of that. He didn’t even kill the guy. At least he thinks he didn’t kill him. Either way, things are messy. Messy and damn exciting. (Andrew)
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
