Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
DICK TRACY FOREVER #1 $3.99 (IDW) – Michael Avon Oeming and Dick Tracy are two things that seem like they should have always been in each other’s orbits. Two sensibilities so perfectly matched that a whole library of work should have already sprung from their marriage. But no, this is the very first time that that Oeming will be guiding the square-jawed detective-shaped ship that is Dick Tracy. Should be pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good. (Kris)
BLACK WIDOW #4 $3.99 (Marvel) – Things are scary for the Widow. She’s in a web of a different kind. The Dark Web. Natasha caught and her torture and death is entertainment for a bunch of sick fucks. But never fear. The party will soon be over for those sick fucks. (Andrew)
REDNECK #19 $3.99 (Image) – After Donny Cates and Lisandro Estherren COMPLETELY BLEW UP THE WHOLE DAMN BOOK last issue, the Bowman family (or what’s left of them) have to figure out just what kind of afterlives they can possibly make for themselves now that everything’s gone to shit. Hunted, hurting, and on the run, the closest salvation appears to be south of the border in Mexico. But, as the old adage goes, appearances can be deceiving as fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. I added that last part. (Kris)
PUNK MAMBO #1 (OF 5) $3.99 (Valiant) – I love a good detective story. Especially when said detective is a punk rock voodoo priestess! Punk Mambo’s got her first solo series and she’s not taking it easy on her first outing. While investigating a series of abductions in the New Orleans Gutter Punk scene, she stumbles upon an even bigger mystery that is sure to be deadly. Cullen Bunn tells the story while Adam Gorham (Geek Hard’s favourite punching bag) provides the pretty pictures. (Andrew)
THANOS #1 (OF 6) $4.99 (Marvel) – Can anyone write a good modern Thanos story other than Donny Cates? I’m not convinced. But Marvel is giving Tini Howard a crack at the big, purple bastard. Along with a recently reinvigorated Ariel Olivetti on art, I’m willing to give it a whirl. In this new mini-series, the relationship between Thanos and his adopted daughter Gamora will be examined to a heretofore unheard of degree. These mofos are taking things right back to the beginning, offering old fans and newly minted ones alike the perfect primer before the Mad Titan returns to theatres this weekend in Endgame. (Kris)
ELECTRIC BLACK #1 $3.99 (Scout) – This book sounds like the perfect mix of creepy and peculiar that you have to check it out. The Electric Black is a antique shop that can appear anywhere, in any time. Whoever enters always leaves with something. That thing may be a forbidden object that will change the life of the buyer. Add to that the staff of said emporium love to manipulate their customers for their own devious purposes. Sounds like a good time! (Andrew)
A WALK THROUGH HELL #9 $3.99 (Aftershock) – Last issue was chock full of massive reveals. Shaw and McGregor sat down for a little chat with a being who may or may not be an honest-to-Jeebus servant of hell and were treated to a full-on life story. Needless to say it was quite fucked. At the end, an interesting tidbit was dropped regarding FBI Assistant Director Driscoll. Where all this is heading is anyone’s guess, but I’m willing to go on record right now and declare this book the best thing Garth Ennis has written since The Boys. Read it. (Kris)
JESSICA JONES MPGN TP PURPLE DAUGHTER $19.99 (Marvel) – You know what? I’m a big fan of Jessica Jones. I’m also a big fan of writer Kelly Thompson. I also enjoyed the last Jessica Jones story that Kelly wrote. So this one’s a no brainer. The purple man is messin’ with Jessica once again, this time through her daughter. This will probably be another big story for the Marvel Universe’s super sleuth. Check it out! (Andrew)
GHOST TREE #1 $3.99 (IDW) – A young man, unhappy with his lot in life, returns to Japan and his family’s ancestral home. Luckily for him, that particular piece of property comes with its very own tree that attracts all manner of spooks, so that should keep him busy for awhile. Also? One of those aforementioned spectres just happens to be his grandfather. I’m sure the old coot won’t divulge anything weird that will completely upend the young lad’s view of his family or anything. (Kris)
JUGHEAD THE HUNGER VS VAMPIRONICA #1 $3.99 (Archie) – The Archie Horror line is a big hit. Jughead the Hunger has a bunch of fans. Folks like that Vampironica. It was just a matter of time before we had ’em in the same book, squaring off. With amazing artwork from Pat & Tim Kennedy, Frank Tieri tells us a scary story that’s guaranteed to entertain. Take a walk through Riverdale after dark and find out.
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
